This is an outstanding review, Josh! The way you broke the gaming experience down - including your experiences and opinions on the headphone's dynamic range capabilities and why it could actually be detrimental to games - was very well done. Most people assume only imaging and sound stage capabilities matter for gaming, but you really got in depth here. I wish other reviewers would take the time to do this. Well done sir!

I own the LCD-GX. I found that they really shine when hooked up to a tube amp. Solid State amps make it sound boring, while a good tube amp really brings it to life. Also, with most Audeze you have to EQ it a bit. These are the best LCD straight out of the box, but tightening up the upper mid range really helps these headphones. So I don't quite agree with you on them not being good "audiophile" headphones.

I just bought them too....sounded great even without EQ. If I decide to "tighten" them up, what software for Windows works best?? I hear EQ APO + Peace UI, but I've never used. Do you have any files to import that might be worth testing? Thanks for your time!

Gaming does not need to be competitive only. Just like there are different types of headphones from different music genres, you need different types of headphones for different types of games, if you like to play competitive in small maps vs large open world just chilling in Destiny 2 for example, with a really good headphones like the Focal Clear MG Pro is made for Destiny 2.

Hey, I have recently found your channel as I'm just starting stepping into the audiophile world and your videos are being very nice and helpful so far. I would like to give you a suggestion that might be a very small thing but definitely something I miss in your videos compared to some others, as I'm not a native English speaker and you speak rather fast, when you mention some products models, I need to go back a few times to really catch the exact model name, in other reviewers they tend to always show a text on screen with the model name when they say it, I think this not only helps for people who struggles to catch up but also gives kind of a sleek professional look to the video.

So we have a luxury efficient planar, light weight and the most comfortable of the lot. Looks are subjective but I'm a sucker for Red and Black. Mostly usable out of the PS4 remote and a phone. The mic quality is a bit disappointing but its a very simple solution to dealing with dual entry headphones, it gets the job done. On top of this we have a 3 year warranty and a solid travel case from a US based company. Resale value should hold so cost of ownership will be a lot less than the $900 price tag. Should be easy enough to get at least a 10% discount from an authorized Audeze dealer. Hearing about compressed dynamics is frustrating. Seems to me DSP's are pretty darn effective in compressing audio if that's your thing. Dynamic compression is pretty counter-intuitive to what one would expect from an audiophile grade headphone. Is this compression across the frequency range or mainly in the high-end to help with fatigue? The FR response for these seems like the flattest of the bunch with a bit of that Audeze house sound (which I admittedly have never heard). I got impatient for your review and have these on the way. Maybe Ill order in some HIFIMan Sundas to compare. I'm coming from Oppo-PM3's and expect these to be a major up-grade. I was hoping for a bit more praise but that's the high end market. Be it headphones or luxury vehicles. Luxury does not equate to value, reliability or performance but points more to the overall package with refined and improved user experiences. It took me a good year of driving BMWs for work to fully appreciate the experience that BMW sells because wow do those cars have problems and some very cheap parts for their price tag. Overall these are a compelling package for someone that wants a high-end all in one headphone for games, music and movies that wont require an amp everywhere you go. The question still remains though. Just how little value in sound quality am I actually getting and does my unit have quality control issues? I suppose my learned appreciation for BMW's helped sell me on this over priced "gamer" headphone.

You'll like them. I have been comparing them to the LCD x for a month and a half now and I pick these up 9/10 times. It is a severe disservice to call these gaming cans. What they are is a very good multimedia headphone. If you want one headphone on your desktop that does it all for long stretches everyday, this is it. I disagree with josh on soundstage and imaging compared to the x. Visually speaking the X is the equivalent of a really good professional HDR monitor while the gx is like a consumer grade HDR tv. X has more degrees / pixels for imaging. The sound and its profile is very well defined. Think of a solid white dot on a black screen. Now a bigger one on tv but while equally bright and defined has a halo around it(think local dimming), giving it a slightly fuzzy glare like quality. what is a defined point on the X is a slightly fuzzy dot on the gx. But it still moves around the same way and is clear enough that it gets the job done. I have been gaming even more than usual thanks to corona and I have no complains. The stage however is definitely wider but a lot more taller than the X with less vertical imagining precision. I confirmed the width with my gf who gives zero shits about headphones. The X has a more cuppy feel and sound to it and even isolates more sound. GX isn't wide by definition but also not as bad as josh describes it. The GX lacks this finite wall while still being narrow that it does reverb and room echos better than the X, leading to better immersion. Keep in mind I am comparing 2019-20 models. Josh reviewed older models of X both times. The difference between the two is like sitting 2 feet from a monitor vs sitting 2 feet from a tv. GX being the tv, same resolution, slightly less dynamic range. The X has a narrow, perfectly curved semi circle in front of your face while the GX has more forward, flatter stage that is slightly wider, if you can imagine the arch of a bow in your head and out your ears. What isn't talked about in the vid is the speed and tonality. So often overlooked are transients and natural/lifelike tonality. The X does that transients better. More magnets and fazor will do that. It is just a tighter sound overall. The gx trades that for a less specific sound and build. But it is tuned perfectly. The X does not sound good without EQ (takes it like a champ btw)and it isn't even a personal thing. The midrange is just bad and has a peak around 1khz and a biiiiig dip somewhere around 4-5khz. Vocals sound nasally and plasticity. The only times I want the X is when i am listening to techno and other electronics without vocals. Even then, synth sounds I have heard for years sound wrong because they have always sounded the same but with varying resolution in different gear. I believe having a lifelike tonality should be first thing to develop after making sure something makes sound. My only gripe about the frequency response would be the treble being dark but that only results in longer listening for me so I can't even complain since it isn't really lacking anything there. I have come to embrace that and the slight compression because it just begs to be on for long and louder. I have stayed up many nights, going on insanely long music binges since getting them. I have yet to get tired of this headphone like I do with others and even the X which I used exclusively before I decided to get these. The GX isn't a master at any one thing. Even gaming like shown in the vid, but it does everything else so good that it is the one i reach for the most. I also expect QC flaws in boutique products because you are trading reliability for overall quality and exclusivity. What should be a worry is if the customer service compensates for that boutique manufacturing. It hurts to see this gem from audeze being called a gamer headphone when it is so much more than that.

Hi Josh another awesome review I need your opinion I have the ps5 with the mayflower arc amp how do these sound are they good for watching movies and how is the imaging is it at least decent because there very very expensive but they look like a beast what's your opinion thankyou
@juanp7564 жыл бұрын
You are only taking into account competitive gaming. There are also single player gaming, on those games you usually just want to get in the world, but if you can hear every single noise it ruins the atmosphere. I have a Focal clear that I love listening music with it, but in games it ruins the atmosphere. I use my he4xx for that. And the same applies for movies, with the focal the speech is higher and in your face, ambience noise the same.

Hearing all little detail or noise still count as immersive experience though. I love listening to how water drops or insects sound in a game , especially open world games like witcher 3, etc..so it may still be a plus for some people
@shootinbruin36144 жыл бұрын
Josh addresses that in his HD800S video. He mentioned that while most headphones make you choose between competitive gaming performance and immersion, the HD800S does both very well

6:28 yo that FOV looks horrible is set way to high, gives me motion sickness, how can someone play like that... Also that mic sounds amazing for a "gaming headset". Also, Battlefields footsteps has been bugged since launch you can use a 100.000£ pair of headphones it will still be shit.

Hey Josh, I wanted to buy an end game DAC and was looking at D90, but at the same price, or even cheaper for 2 days, SMSL has a new DAC M400 with the same chip and the latest UAT Bluetooth codec. Are you going to do a review anytime soon?

I am using the beyerdynamic mmx 300 v2 with the astro mixamp on my xbox series x. I was thinking upgrading. I was maybe thinking the penrose x but I think I would prefer wired headphones rather than wireless. Any advice?

With regards to the hd800s for gaming, cs pros still use dollar-store iems

I'm pretty sure if they could afford it, they'd go hd800s. Turns out playing video games isn't very profitable for most esport players.

I play usually single player open world games like Witcher 3, RDR2, AC Odyssey etc. and want to feel immersed in the world. Not into competitive. Would this be good for it or should I get the HD800S? I listen to heaps of music too and have been using an HD600 for the last decade. I’m looking for an endgame set that will last me another decade.

@Frencho94 жыл бұрын
Joshua, you should try the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Gen II (closed back) and Tygr 300 (open back) I heard good stuff about em and they might earn a spot next to your gaming headphone trifecta (Senn HD800S, Beyer DT 1990 Pro, Beyer DT 880 Pro).

Josh, your honesty about even really good headphones not making you a much better player is the reason I watch your videos. You're also the only reviewer on KZbin (or even the forums actually) who has an equal grasp on reviewing equipment both as a gamer and as a more "traditional" audiophile. Please keep a small segment addressing gaming in your reviews. I feel like the gaming + audiophile niche suits you really well and would help you stand out from the other reviewers out there. Keep up the good work! P.S. If you ever get your hands on a Stax SR009S, I would love to hear your thoughts on it!

Kinda curious what the best headphones for gaming are under $300. I have the hd598s, and i feel like i could be getting a better headphone in that price range. My problem is the hd800s are way too expensive, and from what people have said the AKGs dont have a lot of bass… which would be fine for competitive gaming but it would take away immersion

So, the Arya sucks for gaming?! Shame, but I totally get it now after hearing Josh explanation about frequency dynamic rage tuning. What about the Ananda for gaming? I want to add a planar to my gaming headset collection, but it has the be the best one, Audeze GX vs Hifiman Ananda comments are welcome! (Mobius and HyperX budget planars need not apply)
