Audi A3 Battery Replacement DIY (2015-2020 MQB Audi 8V A3 & S3)

►Your Audi S3's battery is the main source of electrical energy in the car. Batteries are typically reliable but do have a lifespan, so you will eventually need to replace them. Possible signs of a failing battery are hard starting and regularly finding it dead after a drive or an overnight rest.
A failing alternator could also be the culprit, so you'll have to do some investigation. Don't worry, though, we can help you with that, too.

Oct 2023 - battery died on me, went to local auto store and computer indicated I needed professional install. I called the local Audi and for a battery install and cpu reset it was 500. After research my 2015 Audi a3, I replaced the battery myself in the parking lot. All the system alerts fired, but cleared within 1-2 minutes of driving. This car does not require a computer reset.

Yup, biggest misconception is people thinking yo need a scanner to fix the lights. Nah, just take it for a 2 minute drive and you’re good to go.

Most modern Audis you will have reset the battery and input the correct information using a scanner or obdeleven scan tool. Sometimes you can get away with not doing if the battery replacement is the exact same brand/ah etc. but i wouldn't count on it. Recently changed my battery from the stock AGM with BEM code to a more standard 12v AGM Battery with no BEM code. The car starts up fine and drives okay but due to not being registered yet with my cars computer the alternator belt isn't working properly helping to provide the appropriate charge to my new battery. I can tell bc of the noise as well as my throttle response has worsened, car no longer accelerates like it used to. Should be resolved after i register it properly. Just letting people know in the comments that its not exactly this cut and dry for most german cars.

Thank you so much for this video. I am not really a mechanic, but with your help I was able to easily change my battery. I was really shocked that my Audi 2016 A3 had the original battery in it! My car came from Germany and it was helpful that you pointed out the ground was near the rear of the car, my battery had the stickers incorrectly placed and because of you when I seen it was saying the rear was positive I took a closer look and it was in fact the ground! You are awesome for sharing this - have a blessed new year!!

Great video. The only issue I had when replacing the battery was the car's clock reset to 12:00. Any ideas how to remedy this? I wasn't able to find anything when going through the menu/settings. Thanks

This worked for my 2015 A3 Deisel in case anyone is thinking of trying. The electronic stability control light and tire pressure monitor system turned on when i started the car, it also did not idle correctly at first. After i reset the computer with my $10 OBD scanner the error lights turned off. After driving 1-2 minutes the idle returned to normal

How do you tell if it has a battery management system or not?

I think the pre facelift cars might not have a battery management system, but the facelift ones do. I have a 2017 8V S3 and called my dealer to ask, he said yes there is BMS on my car. This was confirmed by another independent shop, they both said coding it is required. If you don't it will techincally work fine in the short term, and you should not get a CEL. But it will affect the charging rate from the alternator which could hurt longevity/cause future headaches with electrical

Wouldn't be better to keep power to the electrical on the car with a battery pack connected to the 12 volt outlet in the dash? This way you don't loose all your electrical settings?

Thanks battery removed charged and back in all back in working order. As ive read elsewhere tpms sensor and other fault systems are now all on although they havent actually got problems.. Whats the next move to reset the fault sensor warnings? Thanks

I've just heard it may just be a case of driving the car as little as 10 feet and it will all start kicking in that all is okay and the sensors will turn off 👍

Question about the battery cover. How important is that? For some reason mine is pretty burnt up and not sure how that happened being that I’ve never seen smoke coming from my engine bay. Noticed it when I went to replace the battery.

I had the same issue and it turned out to actually be a mouse that chewed the battery cover. not sure what it's made of, but rats and mice go crazy for it. I also found mouse droppings all over the intake manifold.

Not important at all. In fact if you’re in a hot climate I’d take it out as it causes battery to die sooner from extra insulation

Do you have to set up and programming the new battery with a computer to the ECU of the car? Don't you lose all the ECU information when disconnected the terminals? 🙏😉💯

Nope just did mine. Throws a bunch of errors on first start, but then clears itself out after a minute or two.

I screwed up. When installing my new battery, I connected the negative post first. Now the car won’t start, and I have zero juice, no power at all. Did I just ruin a brand new battery?

Hi Chris, that should not necessarily damage your battery, there is a chance you could have a bad battery, or it simply needs a charge before use.

I have a 2015 Audi A3 Quattro Premium Plus preface lift (headlight update). I installed a new battery (battery code: J1D) from Sam’s Club and turned on the car with all the crazy warning lights gone off after I start the car. I then turned off the car engine and let the car sit for few minutes and start the car up again. With my gear in Park and turned my wheel all the way to the left and all the way to the right and all the warning lights just gone. I’ll see if I can drive it in the morning without issues. Hope this helps people here looking for informations. I still don’t know if my A3 has battery management system or needed to adapt a new battery when replacing the old. I was shocked that the original battery lasted this long.

@@sultanibrahim4230 Go ahead and swap it man, everything was fine. Let the ecu relearn once it starts, take it for a drive, and you're good. I didn't have to use vcds at all, it just sorted itself out. Talked to some audi tuners and they said it's never been an issue for them

The thing is, I have the Quattro premium plus edition, you think I’ll be good still? It doesn’t even have a backup camera lol. Also how long does it take for the ecu to relearn?
