Awesome review!! I just have to say that I totally agree that these are the audis with the most elegant and excitng design. Got myself an Audi A5 8T Sportback 2.0 TFSi back in 2015 and added the A7 4G Facelift 3.0 TDI Competition last year. Couldn't be happier with them. Although i don't like touchscreens in cars, i really like the new interieur designs!

I picked up the top trim A7 2019 wrapped in satin black and I lost count on how many people stop and compliment the car.Its in a class all on its own.The A5 looks amazing as well kind of like the younger sibling of the A7

I like the A7 and especially from behind because it's really reminiscent of the Audi 100 C1 Coupé S from 1969. I'm old enough to remember this model and it was just as futuristic in terms of design as the A7 is today. I think it's quite interesting that Audi draws the lines on modern cars almost 50 years back in time, but it just shows that solid design overall stands up well for many years. Kudos to Audi for doing just that. The A5 I think is just a slightly cheaper follow up on A7 to make the market for this concept bigger.

My father had the Audi 100 Coupe S back in the early 70’s, and what a great car for the time. In 2020 I bought a new A7, 3 litre petrol, Vorsprung edition, and love it! The pre-sense sometimes kicks in for no apparent reason, and there is a bit too much throttle lag for my liking, but otherwise it’s superb. Being the Vorsprung version, it has every option on it, and I can’t think of any other car that would give me the same overall style/comfort/power combination. It’s a keeper!

I've got the Facelift A5 TFSI 45 in nardo grey. It's a dream car! I drove over 24k km and it's a freaking awesome car. Tbh I specifically went for it because the built quality is actually one of the best in class. FREAKING AMAZING CLIMATE CONTROLS, and I also got no rear view camera, which I installed later and imagine, no front sensor, I didn't even think that you should tick that as an option in the builder... duh.. but oh well, it's still a fantastic car.

@@autogefuehl I've got a deal from the Audi Dealer, and they installed it for "only" ~300euro, so that's still an original Audi camera. But probably installing an aftermarket one could be cheaper but I want to keep things Original. It's definitely an Authobahn cruiser, good noise insulation, veeery stable, and planted. I do love driving it and it brings me lots of joy.

Great review, as always. I think both are very good looking. Regarding the lack of standard rear-view camera on the A7 in Germany (10:20) is not really surprising to me, as the standard spec there is always inferior compared with other countries (also for other German brands). They are so stingy there! But in the UK the rear-view camera is standard.

1:18 I liked the A5 better before the facelift. For some reason they made the frontal overhang even a bit longer and tilted the grill more. The prefacelift version of the A5 certainly looked better proportioned without the gap on the hood.

i highly agree on that. i also like the taillight of the pre-facelift a bit more. they look cleaner, not so nervous. but the most benefit i see with the pre-facelift is that you stil got a dvd-player with two sd-card-slots in the glovebox - that totaly gone with the facelift. also i want to mention that i dont like touch-screens because it starts looking disgusting after a few days due to the grease you put on it while operating... you constantly have to whipe it clean. in the pre-facelift you just have some dust on it after a few months you can easyly get rid off.

Both beautiful, but the A5 is the better looking car to me. I like the interior of the A5 better as well. Also, i could afford an A5 and not an A7. The A5 is on top of the list for my next company car. Even if I'd have no money issues I'd probably go for an RS5 (and a SQ7 for the family). The A5 SB just has the perfect look to me.

I love my A7 but as you mentioned in this video I am frustrated by the dashboard build quality, lots of plastic buzzes and creaking noises. It appears that they may have addressed this and made improvements. This makes me wonder if I can take it in to get it updated.

I do not like the "updates" on the A5. The textured aluminum trim on the interior of my '17 A4 is so much nicer; the piano black trim on the A5 is a fingerprint magnet. The old control knob and buttons on the previous B9 A4 and A5 were also better than the new touch screen as they could be operated by touch without ever having to take your eyes off the road. And since Audi has removed the control knob, they should have moved the cup holders further away from the instrument panel so large cups don't hit it. Maybe a vertical arrangement would have worked here.

Thought I was the only one who loves the control knob. I have a ‘19 A5 and it was the last year that has it. I hate touchscreens because they are fingerprint magnets and is more of a distraction while driving like you mentioned. I just don’t feel as safe reaching out of my driving position to touch the infotainment screen. While with the control knob, you basically don’t have to take your eyes off the road because the number of clicks will indicate where you are in the menu. It’s actually a dealbreaker for me to go with Audi again in the future unless they bring the control knob back. It’s incredibly valuable for daily driving.

I have a 2016 A7 TDI. Not sure why they only had the TDI for 3 years but having a car with the performance of the A7 and being able to get 35-40 MPG is outstanding.

@@Jithin48 I am the second owner of the car and the only issue I had with it was that my DEF fluid pump died just after I purchased the car. It was replaced under warranty and I have yet to have any other issues.

I have a 2016 A7 and I love it. I prefer this model year to the newer ones. It just looks more distinctive to me and I like the older stye controls. Once you have an A7, you won't want anything else.

In the company I work for we have a lot of both, 3series for sales reps and 5series for managers, so I often see them side by side and ride on both. Main differences are agility for the 3 and comfort and refinement for the 5. Can’t really say the 5 is bulky, but compared to the 3 you really feel the sheer size of it. 3 series seating position is really low, so you need to know it. Personally I like a nice low sporty seating position, but some people will find it too low. 5 is a bit less lively, but way more comfy.

I have an A5 Sportback and love it. I like the sophistication of the A7 BUT the extra size would take the edge of it for me. Parking spaces are so small now (or cars are so big) so whilst aids help you park, you can't open the door because the other cars are so close 😞

Had a5 45 tfsi as a rental (2023). Amazing car already, was able to navigate in northern italy mountains and towns quite easily. Now just thinking whether to get 45 tfsi or 50tdi. (price difference is 8000 euros (53k base, 63k with options vs 61k base and 70k with options). When it comes to a7, this would be like 78k which a5 is already hitting wallet a lot steeply. Both cars are stunning and havent found a single car, that comes to terms in style (gone through different brands and none of them come close).

Another excellent entertaining and informative review (and comparison) of German autos, Thomas. I have definitely benefitted from this detailed comparison of A5 vs A7 - exactly what I needed. The realtime dilemma has woken me up at 4am the past two mornings. Have I made my decision as a result? Hmm. My final decision is now narrowed down to performance, comfort, maneuverability - including sound levels. Wait! isn't that where I started? Yes, but you've given me great data, sound bites and imagery to mull over today and tomorrow. In the end, it will likely be decided by price - and I've narrowed that down by now looking at new A5s compared to few-years-old, low mileage A7s. I'll keep ya'll posted.

After a test drive of the A5, I'm now at - what I think is a good middle mashup - for my inability let go of desire to get more pep & tightness closer to the lower price point of an A5. Today I'm going to be testing the 2024 S5. Without the Prestige options, I may be able to work a deal in high 50s to low 60s. What do you think?

My two favorite Sportbacks/Fastbacks. Or at least they were. Both the A5 and A7 from their previous generation looked gorgeous in fact buying one of them is a personal goal of mine. However in their current gen form despite the overall positive facelift i wouldn't buy an A5 even if i could because i find it repulsive mainly because of it's unattractive grill and the shape of the headlights. The A7 on the other hand turned out good looking and edgy. In the back the A5 always looked better for it's upward and more rounded design which made it look sportier. While the A7 has the cooler taillights it's end sloops too far back and goes too far down. Interior wise i would have preferred the A7 because having your nav in the gage cluster is pretty handy but now that this gen A5 has that as well combined with the manual climate controls make it a clear winner. Don't like its tablet like infotainment though. The A7 looks like the better choice but you have that odd decision of placing the climate vents above the infotainment system and a second screen for the climate controls which in time will become cumbersome. I also don't like this short blocky shifting leaver Audi is implementing in all its model lineup. The classic rounded leaver with the S or RS logo at the top was the best. Audi's decision for the engine choices here in Europe are really bizarre and confusing. My personal favorite would have been the 3.0 supercharged engine with 333hp but i guess i would have settled for a 2.0 A5 with 225hp. Let's see what the future holds for these two. From what im seeing it doesn't look very bright because with the future A6 Sportsback EV Audi wouldn't need the A5 or the A7.

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. They can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even from plant-based materials (like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum). Or the Polestar 3 e.g. is using pine oil. And even if you still create a leatherette seat the classic way with petroleum base without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is very little in comparison to how much oil is used for other car parts or how much oil is burned for fuel or heating. We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

I have an S5 Sportback with Adaptive Sport Suspension. After I replaced the terrible stock Continental tires to new Pilot 4S tires, the S5 became a completely different car. The comfort is way better now, I might even say it’s way more comfortable than the A6 I drove as a loaner (US don’t have Air suspension option in the A6). Then, comparing the S5 to A6 steering and handling, there is no doubt the S5 handles better. A6 handling sucks, it’s like driving a boat and lack steering feel. The one thing the A6 does better than my S5 is the road noise. It’s non existent in the A6.

The A5 has a much better rear end! The A7 has a droopy back end. Also, using a touchscreen to control basic functions like climate control is ridiculous! This forces the driver to take their eyes of the road to make sure they have selected the correct virtual buttons/settings. It's not practical as the A5's climate control system

Between the two A5 hands down for the climate controls and minimal gloss black. 🤮Money for both and I'd buy a fully loaded S5 and get the gloss black center console wrapped matte. Although still my money any choice I'd love to get an A4 Allroad (U.S. only wagon outside of lotto win RS6) and do basic performance tuning/suspension.
