I bought the Arteon because whilst most of what you said is fair about the luxury feel, the Arteon is plenty good enough and when you start looking at 4WD or added extras the price differential VERY soon becomes unbearable. So already add the £1200 you said for like for like infotainment, then add an extra £1500 for 4WD over the VW and you’re already a LONG way over, then make sure your Audi has Lane Assist and adaptive cruise which are standard in the RLine Arteon and in my case the difference was over £5k. Totally agree the Audi feels a bit better but for £5k I went to Mauritius for 2 weeks with my wife, that also made me feel better, especially when I got home and got back in my Arteon....

I went and had a look at high spec R line Arteon today, it is lovely both inside and out. Used examples will be bargain. The 2.0 bitdi is a super car. I have current A4 Sline 190bhp Quattro - am struggling to justify either of these apart from hatchback boot. A5 does not do a lot for me over the A4 and prefer the led headlamps/running lights on A4.

Overall I'll choose the Arteon as it has the styling, space and is something fresh to the market. Never really liked the A5 as I found it to be outdated and not really something eye catching which they did resolve with the new RS5.

I've driven both back to back - the A5 on regular suspension and 19" wheels. The Audi was at least on par realistically with the Arteon on 20" in comfort mode.

The Audi cost more, does not come with the digital cockpit, the cost for adding this is almost 10,000 more because you need to upgrade many things. and the wheels are 18 not 20. Add the 20's and still even more, he mentioned that the VW has a 7 speed transmission but in fact it's an 8 speed transmission. There is no comparison, this is a rigged demo. He also failed to mention the fully auto driving assist. That is standard in be and cost even more in the Audi.... as for the ride, the answer is clearly NO the Audi was purposely downgraded against the arteon so they could keep the Audi price around the same as the VW unfortunately for this demo as with most the Volkswagen has all the features the Audi doesn't have included in the price

Abdelhameed Barqawi the a5 won in his opinion because it was funner/better to drive while being big enough, plus he said when he compared the a5 with upgraded options vs upgraded options in the arteon, its still around the same price. Why I would pick the a5. I specd them out & indeed they were both $49k w/ what I'd get. (Almost loaded r line vs s line w/nappa leather & most everything except virtual cockpit ) Better interior. More fun to drive Prefer the front looks on the a5 Better quality materials with better fit & finish imo would be on the top 3 things I'd look for in a car like this. I'm betting on the arteon things like the door armrests feel fairly cheep just as in the current crop of vw cars. The audi won't have that issue. I'd much prefer the flat bottom steering wheel you can get in the a5 that the arteon doesn't have really have. Center stack in the a5 looks and feels better compared to the arteons center stack which is 95% the same as vw sedans from 8 yrs ago. I want vw to succeed, in the US, the a5 will probably be more loaded vs loaded (though no fantastic duel clutch in the arteon) vw hasn't been a step above in interiors for a while now. vw doesn't make enthusiast cars for the most part (still love the gti/r) i want them to set themselves apart again in the us but will the arteon do that?

Trentimus actually, I don’t think so. Comes down to preference. I think the design inside Arteon is so much more sleek and gentleman like. Audi’s interior feels to me like there is too much going on for no reason. And that screen up there is just ugly. Arteon feels more sophisticated and grown-up to me. But that is all subjective.

The exterior of Audi used in this test is worst you can get from an A5. Wheels are too small, color is not fitting in, xenon lights instead of full LED, it's not S-line.. etc etc. Arteon... best color, amazing wheels, full LED lights.. If Audi had 19" inch S-line wheels, black or white color and full led lights... Arteon wouldnt be noticed at all.

To be honest, the Audi was poorly equipped on the exterior, it has small 17" wheels, no led headlights, no automatic transmission, no s-line etc. While the VW has bigger wheels and a sports trim exterior package with full led headlights. Thats why the Audi would look sharper and better than the VW, if it was as fully equipped as the Vw and thats why the Audi deserved the victory.

i had an Arteon for a day - gorgeous thing in the deep blue i had it in - R-line trim too. People actually turned heads to look at it. People wouldnt bat an eye lid at the A5. Had a pants engine though - think it was a low powered petrol

arteon is a better choice imo. the infotainment screen is nicer than that slapped on dash on the audi, the mechanics of it are simpler, easier to repair and cheaper, the interior is huge, the design is nicer.

My reasons why the Arteon won: 1) Buying the Arteon you will still have a special and unique car after 6 years. Audi brings a facelift of their cars every year. You'll be driving an old car very soon.. 2) I love the exterior looks of the Arteon. The Audi is so regular. 3) Take a look at the option package.. They start at the same price but with Audi you will always have to go limited because it's unpayable. and you'll be soon in the price range of an A6. Don't get me wrong: Big audi fan here, but I think the Arteon won this contest on practicality and looks. (and driving is almost similar). In the end the audi is just an expensive volkswagen with another badge. Here in Europe you see an A5 on every streetcorner. I saw this Arteon in Brussels yesterday in pearl White with black tainted windows and black rims. Everybody stopped whatever they where doing to take a look. Good Job on this VW, you are building not-boring cars anymore. Now make an R version of this thing with 300+ HP and a new market will open!

Most people are complaining what vw was thinking pricing this car as much as an a5, but I think I know why. In China, VW is the biggest car company, and has insane amount of brand loyalty. In fact, people there would prefer a VW over an Audi, as they think that’s more premium. It’s the same way as some brands like ford release expensive brands in USA, because they have brand loyalty. The space the car has shows its targeted to China, where owners prefer the back seat to driving.

Interior, dash, actually is taken from passat b8, audi’s dash is pretty much same as in arteon, if you look better, only info system is poping up. Arteon got much more equipment than audi. No way i would choose audi!

I think your Carwow reviews are brilliant Mat - but - I do feel after watching LOADS that you are a huge Audi lover. You even admitted that you wouldn't be saying the A5 was such a nice looking car if it didn't have the 4 rings on the front.I love the look of the A5. It was going to be my next car, until I stumbled across the Arteon. It's much cheaper on lease deals and gives much more tech as standard, and it's still a very nice looking car with decent speed. So due to the price difference on lease, Arteon is going to be my next car. Sorry Audi

Well, I own a Passat B8 (2.0 TSI 280 KM, Adaptive Suspension) and lately I've been driving an Audi A3 - I can tell you that Audi is better when it comes to soundproofing and suspension - the A3 standard suspension was more comfy than my VW Adaptive Dumpers in Comfort Mode. That was quite a shock for me (I was SHOCKED, indeed!), but it's the reality. Now I believe that Audi is not just the 4 rings, it's the quality you get. I got it after driving the A3 - which is much smaller that the Passat. I'm still shocked when I think about it. How come that a small Audi is more comfy that a Passat with Adaptive Suspension in Comfort Mode - VW, HOW COME?!

@@_the_dare_devil_ Don't agree with that mate. I have a B8 Passat as well as an Audi A8 and the Passat is just as good as the A8 when it comes to suspension an comfort. The A8 is more refined with less wind noise but the Audi has more tyre noise (probably because of its larger wheels and tires so not the Audis fault) But really the Passat is not far behind a larger Audi like an A4 or A6 and is worlds better than an A3. The A3 is a very cheap car and I would know because I've been in several of them. The only thing the A3 does better than the Passat is the quality of the buttons and switches; Audi always have the nicest feeling buttons.

I know its an old model so maybe not fair to compare it to the B8 Passat which is almost 15 years newer but the newer A8s aren't that much better than the D3 from what I've seen. The A3 I had was an 8V model, so based on the same MQB platform as the Passat. At least from my experience with those cars the Passat had better comfort and a similar level of soundproofing to the A3; I also find the Passat interior much nicer than the A3 interior. The A8 definitely has the best soundproofing and comfort of the three cars; although I'd say the Passat is closer to the A8 than the A3 is to the A8. I own both the Passat and A8 so I have the most experience with those cars. Maybe I should spend more time in an A3 but that was my experience when I had the car for a day. The interior was really nothing special in the A3. The buttons and switches in the A3 were nice and clearly Audi components but the materials were nothing to write home about and were generally worse than in the Passat.

I'm a massive Audi fan but I think the Arteon looks far better than the A5. Audi need to change the twin exhaust on the left and put one either side which I think looks significantly better on all cars. Sure, you get that on black editions, but it should be standard.

I wish the Arteon had the V6 option like the 2018 Passat GT had. I don’t understand why Volkswagen dropped the V6 option. I think the 2.0 liter turbo charged four cylinder may be straining a little bit to move this car around!

HELLO Mr Reviewer - The A5 Sportback is not the competitor to the Arteon, it is the A7. I know it is hard for you people to understand but do your homework before spouting off. When the Arteon is viewed in context, it is a great value which is what VW is about.

In Spain the Audi is about 10k more! 5k in price and then another 5k to match the equipment! Also vdub offer better discounts so in other European countries there is no comparison
