Great review but what a load of BS from Audi! Over 6 hours of charging time returning 22 miles with a "full charge"? And in 3-4 years that will mean less than 15 miles? I'd rather have a petrol only car. Any owner prepare to become the laughing stock when people ask about the battery range!

This is actually really smart. You can use the electric motor only for doing what it's best at: low speed stop and go, and save the petrol engine for longer trips outside the city. This allows you to not only save money but also wear and tear on the V6. The thing will basically last forever if it's only used on motorways and is spared of short city trips, where it often doesn't even get the chance to get the oil up to temperature by the time the destination is reached.

£1.21 for 22 miles is like 100mpg. I have the diesel Q7 and 38 mpg is the best I've seen! I like the idea of a hybrid as the petrol engine is there for longer trips and there is no range anxiety. You also retain the range when towing that electric cars cannot match. They make more sense to me as plug in vehicles rather than "self charging". I'd love to see an electric range comparison between hybrids...Great review by the way. Informed and interesting as usual.

I test drove the RAV4 for 2 days and liked it so much in EV mode that I just went out and ordered an EV! On a salary sacrifice scheme my full EV Tesla 3 costs less than running my old Honda CRV. I don’t have a problem with range anxiety in my EV with a range of 300miles perfectly fine for the once a month when I do a 500mile round trip and the rest of the time fuel costs are next to nothing.

@@mas5621 They do. I live near Ottawa, Canada. Tesla and other electric car work but you have to plan for frequent stop to recharge in winter on long drive. I have a friend who has a Tesla 3 and gets about 500 km of range in summer and it goes down to about 280 km in winter. Most people don't need to do 280 km a day and you recharge at home. Most of us who have a commute, have a driveway.
@harsimranbansal5355
@harsimranbansal5355 3 жыл бұрын
@@mas5621 What Serge said but I’d like to point out, thats pretty much the maximum amount of range loss. That means you don’t preheat while plugged in and its colder than -20C out. Most of the time if you preheat you only lose about 10% of range, which isn’t noticeable. If you want to have that extra 40 or 50km of range, you can just slow down a bit, but the EV drivers I’ve seen have no regard for range and drive well above the speed limit since that gets you to your destination faster. Watch “bjorn Nyland” on KZbin, he does a really good job showing what happens to EV in the real cold!

Funny thing you mention about the petrol going off....I have a golf GTE which runs in similar format (27 miles electric range) and 1.4 Petrol. Now I use this mainly for the school run, trips to the local shops, supermarket or takeaway. Since lockdown, and with all of these places being within 7 miles or so, I have only put in £15 of petrol since last February! Its plugged in to charge all the time at home, but once its full it doesn't take anymore which is great. A quick check on my app shows I have done 549 miles since I last put petrol in it, with an average of 256mpg. I also have a 20 plate Q7 Black Edition 45TDI, which is great comfort, but seeing this video it like to the two having a marriage and solving all of my problems! FYI, I have the Q7 for towing so need something with some grunt. I think this if i can trade in my current car and the GTE, I may be tempted to get one of these! Great video as always Rory, great presentation, and very informative, liking the new format too!

Just need manufacturers to realize we need full size battery packs but with a small super light sub one litre engine/generator to recharge them if they get near to exhausting/getting to the end of the range, an emergency extender that will power it to 70 mph. more battery, less engine. like a BMW i8 but with a proper battery pack and smaller engine.

This is a plug-in hybrid. It is not meant to replace an EV and can't be compared to one. It is meant to offer a limited EV range for extraordinary circumstances. There are certain zones in the world where you are allowed to drive only electric and there are some days in some zones when gasoline vehicles are prohibited. This Q7 PHEV will have no restrictions. The range is limited because it is a big and heavy car and as Rory said, there is no range anxiety because you have a massive gasoline engine to take over. This thing has a purpose and it will sell. I am actually very interested.

Ian, you are missing the point of PHEVs: to be efficient. If u r concerned about price, an AUDI is not the brand to go to, Toyota is likely ur brand. As to this AUDI, it’s not efficient. An 18 kWh battery should yield about 50 miles not 20-24 miles. The hybrid mode mpg is just as inefficient. Conclusion: AUDI, BMW, Mercedes have customers to please as to HP/torque. That’s makes $$$ for them. As to their customers, at that income level, efficiency is not a priority so this PHEV has excellent 0-60 time due to high HP/torque. My original statement stands. A Diesel engine, a dying technology due to pollution, typically does not offer performance but efficiency. Final thoughts: in ur case, purchase price and efficiency needs point to no luxury German car brand. A Toyota PHEV meets ur needs and the Prius Prime delivers higher EV miles and mpgs. My selection: used 2018 Ioniq PHEV with 30 EV miles, 62 mpg hybrid mode. Thanks and happy shopping.

Smaller battery and using it to commute in EV mode means the car has to be charged regularly. Frequent charging would mean the battery will deplete and reduce the lifespan very quickly and as a result more use of the petrol engine which is inefficient in this sized car. Then the cost to replace this battery itself would take away the benefit of this use case. For shorter communities, it’s simply best to get an EV than hybrids.

Do not buy this car if you only want to run it EV why would you even recommend it. 22 miles is nothing and for the cost I’m sure this is more than a model 3. Just buy a Prius if you want the best of both worlds and save all that money.

@@307skylake7 it looks better than most VAG cars let's be honest. Look at any French, Italian, Japanese car! Germans don't have the imagination to design an interior better than the one of the LC500. This Q7 looks like an Audi 80 with screens stuck on it😅.

@@dragospahontu No it does not. Next, if I see any other countries vehicle’ it isn’t “not able to design a car” it’s just the Germans not taking as many risks and being creative. That’s what makes the Germans... well the Germans. But, the Q7 isn’t a pretty car, the previous was better for sure, but not at the state of them not able to design a car for sure. You certainly missed the words.

@@307skylake7 The Volkswagen Group make good cars, I've owned a couple and own one now. But I'll have to be honest they don't look very good. When i get in my Passat i try to not look down at the drab inside😅. But recently Skoda and Seat have significantly stepped up their game. The new Leon looks better than the A3!

@@dragospahontu Honestly, VW is the worst designing at the moment (strangely enough since VW owns them all lol) But, Audi and VW is falling in “beauty” if that was every described on their cars. Porsche, lambo, Bugatti, Bentley, they’re all being them sodding off with no major jumps nor major downfalls. But yes, Seat and Škoda is absolutely marvelous (for the segments). The new Seat Cupra Leon is a beautiful golf alternative AND the Cupra Formentor with the upcoming 2.5 5 popper sounds promising too. What I’m trying to say here, is that the Germans CAN desgin a car, but maybe not as good as before, and this is what you probably meant. So in total I somewhat agree. Audi and VW are going more mainstream and less ‘daring’ as its international counterparts, so they leave other brands such as Lamborghini, Bugatti, and more to dare with extraterrestrial-ish designs, and Porsche being the heritage brand, the one we all know and respect for its modern driver centric approaches. Yet, VW and Audi building a hole in the coffin with the much cheaper owned vehicle brands, like you said, Seat and Škoda.

How is 22 miles impressive in any way ? It's a nice, overpriced car but it's only baby steps into electric technology when such older compagnies should have been leading the way for years already. I have no sympathy for them if they can't keep up after stalling progress to keep lining their pockets for so many years.
