Audi R8 LMX - The Greatest R8 Ever? 40 years of Quattro birthday at Goodwood

The Audi R8 LMX has a 5.2 litre N/A V10 producing 570 horsepower, does 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 199 mph. It's also very limited and with only 99 ever built worldwide, it's probably the best and most exclusive Audi R8 ever built.
The LMX which stands for Le Mans Exclusive as it was launched at Le Mans 2014 - is like the holy grail of R8s, and has a host of extra tricks and toys up its sleeve, including laser lights for the first time ever on a production Audi.
We take the most special Audi R8 ever to a very special birthday party at Goodwood, celebrating the birth of the Audi Quattro in 1980. 40 years of Audi Quattro celebrations including hill climbs at the famous Goodwood House, all under the watchful eye of Audi legend Stig Blomqvist, followed by a few fast laps of the Goodwood race track, this time with Le Mans Audi superstar, Tom Kristensen.

I had no idea they made the V10 Plus in a manual. I thought the last manual R8 was the early V10s. And by the time the plus was released they had dropped the manual transmission altogether. I'm not denying that there was, just thought they didn't make a manual plus. Edit: Ah I stand corrected. Just did a quick search and found a 2014 V10 Plus with a manual. And it was the last of the first generation cars. Which IMO were the best looking ones, they had a much subtler aggression, with a dominant rounded beauty to it. Really they were the best looking, IMO. And interestingly, it had sold via auction in Oct. 2019. Yet despite it being sold relatively recently, the selling bid was only 63,000 pounds sterling. Which even after converting it to US dollars, it still only comes out as $85,000.

Gobind Uppal yeah that car is owned by Seb Delaney who is a KZbinr. I also have a manual V10+ hence my love for them. Only about 9 cars made it to the U.K., not sure how many are in the US?

Rare as a rare thing. I bought an a S Tronic Plus and it came with the brochure and I was surprised to see the manual listed.... I knew at that point I'd goofed

@@robertcorbishley1712 LOL sorry to hear that. That said, I feel Audi were the ones who really goofed. They did so little marketing [actually it sounds like they didn't market at all] for the manual R8 Plus; thus, how the hell are customers supposed to know?

Long live the V10! I own an R8 V10 with a gated manual and it's absolutely my pride and joy. Still looks modern even 14 yrs later since it was introduced. It's the last of the multi cylinder atmospheric high revving engines with a manual gearbox breed. Future classic!

Love the LMX. I have to point out that you could also order them in Matt Daytona Grey.. No37 was this colour.... I know this as it’s in my garage.. Great coverage and wish the event for Quattro was in better times as I would have loved to attend.

For me, I really love the pre-facelift B9 RS4, one of the best all-round sports estates you can buy. If we were to go back in time, I’d say, the original R8, what that car represented and what I did for Audi, I think turned Audi Sport (then Quattro-GMBH) into the established performance brand it is now.

I just sold my late 2013 R8 V10 Plus after 4.5 years and 42K miles. Bought it with 3K miles on I was the 2nd owner, the first taking the big depreciation hit (circa 50K) I got it for 88K. It had a new S-Tronic fitted mid way due to a whine from it and paid for under warranty and had an oil leak too, again fixed at no cost to me. The BIGGEST issue with R8 ownership is their dealer network, most struggle, some are inept but one or two are good. Fantastic car for the money and loved the fixed dampers and twin clutch box. LMX will be much the same I am sure. I drove the new one, Audi kept trying to get me into one but never really held the same appeal. I think in the future this car here and the Plus Mk1 will be the car people seek out.

Favourite would be my own first gen manual R8. Heart skips a beat every time I see an old pic or hear one (V8) on the road. Most joyous car I ever owned. Close second would be the B7 RS4, a car a also owned.

The Audi Coupe Quattro Sport wins for me. My local dealer in stockport had a white one on display in the stockport showroom for a long time. I used to stare at it while buying spares for my 85 polo from the parts desk (in 1991)

If money wasn't a issue I'd have the first R8 with the 420hp V8(coupe) and the latest version with the 5.2 V10(Spyder). Sadly I think Audi should've developed the R8 on its own chassis rather than borrowing one from Lamborghini. Plus I think the V10 should never have been used. Audi already had twin turbo v8's that made close to the same power. It always seemed to me they cheaper out and took somebody else's car and made it there's. I mean it was built to celebrate what the R8(at the time) had done on the Racetrack. I guess when VW/Audi sell Lamborghini they'll have to develop its own chassis and engine. I can see the twin turbo V8 from the URUS replacing the V10 next go around. Hopefully they don't turn to E-motors for the extra power.

Most of the gallardo/Huracan is made in Neckarsulm and then finished in kit form. The v10 was always an audi product developed with help from cosworth technology ( audi subsidiary). The lambo v12 is a Lambo product with negligible audi input. Given the huge trouble they are in post dieselgate I highly doubt we'll see another R8 for a while.

Sadly, any R8 is just too heavy to be a driver's car (which is what it is trying to be..). And most are AWD which hardly helps either. I'd recommend anyone looking at these cars to go and test drive a Ferrari 360 or F430 afterwards and feel the difference. It's night and day..
