@@Gaudine Also, when you press on, on a winding road it's apparently all understeer due to the terrible weight distribution - again also, it's "quick" off the line, but given how much power it has, it's really not that great - and sure the 60-100 is great - but outside of Germany, you can't make any use of that legally. Great for munching miles on the highway - as long as you can afford the tickets & the fuel - otherwise a white-elephant in my opinion - or at least definitely a "heart" car, not a "head" car - or anything in between.

Manufacturers these days are trying to wipe them out. Plastic parts, dealer only fitment and software control, parts out of production etc., all contributing to them either being written off, unrepairable or bought by people that should have no business owning them if they can't afford to maintain them.

@@hovnojede010101 Very complicated cars so more things can go wrong, when it does, the parts are quite expensive and it's a pain to work on, so expensive (or time consuming) to service. That being said, saloons with supercar engines needs the maintenance of a supercar while being able to be easily daily driven, so the big bills are coming in more quickly than owners expect, hence the poor reliabilty reputation... These cars are as expensive to maintain as to buy initially if you want to use them as they should be used (daily), and that's not even taking into account the depreciation... That being said, they can still be unreliable, which would be even worse... 😅😅

It's great to see these older generation cars getting some airtime. They're from a time before the youtube/influencer explosion, so they do tend to get forgotten about. I grew up with this car for a few years, my dad got one in 2008 when I was still in senior school - initially I never wanted him to get it as I loved the Range Rover Vogues / Sports he used to drive and felt like Audi was a downgrade - however, I was a stupid kid and I was wrong, this is the car that made me appreciate performance, RS models and VAG sports cars in general, this is the first car that ever made me go ‘wow’ and almost give me whiplash when my dad put his foot down, it made me love cars. I then got a Golf R when I started driving and haven’t had a standard car since, it’s all thanks to the V10 Audi RS6. Even got dropped off at my school prom in it, all the kids being dropped off in rentals acting cool for the day - my dad owned a beast and I was proud of that.

This and the C5 were the epitome of Audi spirit - supercar destroying performance in completely unassuming family estate form. I used to love Audi for this little trick of their. That's why i don't really like the later generations, which went on to be designer cars first and the gorgeous engine took a backseat. Even the old V8 from the C5 is much better than the latest. All it needs is a bit bigger turbos and injectors and it really comes alive. What a period that was twinturbo V10 in an estate, 6.0L W12 DIESEL in a SUV, 4.2L V8 DIESEL in a limousine and SUPERCHARGED V6 in an ordinary family sedan (and also an estate). Audi really peaked in 2010 and it was only downhill ever since.

I had one of the first RS6's in the UK and did over 65K miles in it. An early puncture meant it was off the road for the first 6 weeks as there were no tyres to fit it and the linked suspension eventually gave up the ghost meaning that a steady 70 down the M42 with minor road joints resulted in the car going slightly off line meaning you were constantly correcting but overall fantastic, Comfortable, effortless and intersting when you put your foot down.

In hindsight from a person who was a teen at the time, 2008 might well have been the peak of society. @@mattmorris2867 I doubt they used 2 turbos bc of "2 stages" of boost, normally you use 2 with V-configuration bc of the headers, lack of space, its much easier to feed 1 turbo from 1 bank of cylinders than 1 turbo from both banks. The lag is small bc you still have a BIG displacement to work with. But with smaller turbos (when there is not much reserve of potential extra power) the lag would be even smaller, engine response would be even better. Factory use bigger turbines also bc of less heat and longevity. Excuse my English.

@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 Жыл бұрын
@@PaulTC97 Nonsense. What 'skills' do you need to drive a wonderfully balanced car? The BMW even has this thing called 'feel' which allows the driver to have a million times more information on the conditions, grip, tire placement. I've heard that absolute nonsense about FWD-understeery junk being 'better' because of all kinds of made-up wildly imaginary things, and they've never been true. I've driven these cars and so many others way up north on ice and snow, specifically also testing them and not just driving around for leisure, and often even on ice you can get faster lap times on a RWD car than AWD which seems impossible. But it's true. There's even evidence from that time period these cars are from (just a few years later) by Swedish Auto Motor och Sport who tested RS4 vs. 335ix touring vs.135i vs. Civic Type-R among others, on the same tire model. On ice. With a professional racing driver. The slowest of the ones I mentioned was the RS4. When you have a predictable front end with excellent turn-in and great feel you can absolutely maximise your grip and drive right at the limit. You can be more precise and place the car exactly where you want which can mean hitting an exact groove or avoiding a certain bit of slippery stuff. And above all when you can avoid understeer which makes you back out totally you can instead keep on driving right on the limit of both the front and rear end grip. You'd have to provoke the Audi to go sideways to gain any corner speed or corner exit grip advantage, and no-one does that on the road with such a horrible car with totally unpredictable handling, unpredictably AWD system which you don't know if it'll understeer or send it into wild oversteer... If you don't have a football field of space but instead a lane to keep to you can't chuck it in sideways and then figure out the rest, no, you have to keep it neat-ish and so the Audi will only understeer and you're wasting massive amounts of potential grip which you can't use as you're limited by the front wheels washing out. You can't touch the throttle when the front wheels are overwhelmed.

The best bit was when you were driving at a reasonable speed then put your foot down hard it actually went ‘boom’. Was a nightmare due to 20” wheels in a normal wheel arch, the turning circle was rubbish (had a V8 with 19” wheels before it so really noticed this). The other downside were the running costs, needed new tyres every 7000 miles and as I only drove short distances the fuel costs were outrageous, that’s the only reason I sold it.❤

We had an Avus Silver one back in the day and as a family wagon it was immense. Yes it understeered on roundabouts, but the brutality of its acceleration and the ‘look’ made up for it. We saw 15mpg once too 😅

Great Video Harry, Great to see to see content of performance heroes from the days before engine downsizing and ever more stringent engine emission regulations. I owned the previous (C5 )model in the lovely dark blue and adored the traction and engine noise but found the ride just too harsh. More video's with content like this one please.

I've had a 2008 A6 Allroad V6 3,0 TDI MANUAL (which is for the most part the same car - save the engine and the gearbox) now for 6 years - and I keep coming back at how incredibly good the car is. I've tried many comparable cars in the meantime (a 2008 C-class Merc Wagon - said by some to have brilliant steering, and a recently purchased F11 530d xDrive bimmer) - but the audi has them beat comfortably in terms of ride comfort, chassis control (YES! Even compared to the lauded F11!), practicality and somewhat also in the build quality. We need to appreciate that - yes, there's no space whatsoever in the engine bay of the audi - but then again, the guys from Ingolstadt/Neckarsulm managed to squeeze in a massive engine - even more massive in case of RS6 - with two turbos, no less - IN FRONT of the front axle, keeping their brilliant AWD system (yes it's overall better than xDrive). The brakes are better than in the F11 as well - despite being smaller (321mm front discs compared to 348mm on the bimmer) - they have a better, much more consistent feel - yes, the bimmer has ZF 8 speed auto, which you feel downshifting during braking - but still, brakes on the audi have been mightily impressive and smooth, also very reliable. Also - the audi, thanks probably to the air suspension - shines massively in the roadholding and road absorbtion. Bimmer is nice to drive, even on the twisties - but the audi somehow feels safer (maybe a matter of getting used to) and more convincing, although the bimmer has double wishbone front suspension (that said, the audi's multi-link is in essence the same). The audi doesn't lean in the corners as much as the bimmer, which leans and only THEN settles. Also - I'm still impressed with the power on the audi - hasn't been tuned or modded, still the 171kW engine feels mighty impressive compared to the 190kW on the bimmer (450Nm vs 560Nm) - maybe because the bimmer has an automatic transmission which just muddles everything like a half-baked potato between the pedal and the engine. There's one single gripe with the audi - the fact that I've replaced the front serpentine belt (in spite of also having replaced the pulleys, tensioners, harmonic balancer) for about 20 times - many of them in the dark, on the road, in the snow or dirt or wet fiddling under the car for abt. 2 hours (the audi always knows better if my trip plans are important or not) - there's something not very well-designed for the audi there, hoping the bimmer will fare much better (so far, it has). Also - the interior of the audi is better put together - even if the audi is previous generation compared to the F11 - the air vents are still intact, there is no fading/sticky/flaking rubber on the door handles, steering wheel buttons, etc. Also, the audi has better luggage room (again, in spite of being a generation older) - the length to the top of seats in folded position is EXACTLY 10cm longer in the audi, although the bimmer is only 4 cms shorter overall - and the audi has a massive cavern under the trunk floor for all the junk - in spite of also having the battery there, the spare wheel (which the bimmer does not - and cannot), the air suspension, rear drive diff AND A LARGER fuel tank (82 vs 77). Overall - if only the constant replacement of serpentine belts (cheapest ones are made by KAMOKA and cost EUR 8 - I have 3 of them in the trunk, and no, it's not because of the price) - wasn't there - the car couldn't be blamed for much. Thanks for the video on this massive madness from Neckarsulm - and greetings from Latvia.

I love this Car so much. Not just because of the engine, and everything else but the memories! My dad bought one new in 2008, I practically grew up in it. He had the sedan version which was very rare. I remember how he used to show me the engine and tell me it looked like a bulls face with the horns because it was a lamborghini engine. I owned one from new 2009 model. Factory specced it With all the bells and whistles, ceramics sunroof everything, Fabulous car. Few minor niggles every now and then but rock solid drivetrain. Was one of the first to get over 750bhp stage 2. These easily do 1000bhp on stock internals now. MRC tuning in Banbury are an essential visit if you have one of these for maintenance, servicing and tuning forget main dealers.

In 2013 I went with a friend to an Audi Sport day at Oulton Park. Our choice of cars were r8v10plus and rs6 avant. We thought r8 was good until we changed to rs6. I drove first in that on the prescribed road route and stopped at traffic lights. When they turned green I took off and then screamed at my friend “is the road clear and straight”. I was laughing so much that the tears were streaming down my face and blurring my vision, it is an occurrence that even today when his wife and him pass those lights they refer to that day. I see why you liked this one so much, ours was a mere v8 turbo.

I had a late C6 RS6 Avant for almost 3 years. Best car I have ever owned. So comfortable and smooth then smashed you into the distance when you wanted it too. The only minor downside was the MPG, I was averaging not far off single figures. I would love another over a C7 or a C8. Currently drive an 8V RS3 as I find it to be a mini RS6.

One of the very best "Kombis" (German name for "Wagon" translates to and is short for "Combination") These are incredibly affordable here in Germany (Probably because most of them are here) and i know from Owners all over Germany that these are also fairly easy to have maintained and because of the parts it uses also easily repaired. But again, that might be because i'm in Germany. I know in the USA they're apparently more expensive to maintain, no idea about the UK Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

A friend of mine was a sales manager at an Audi dealership when he rang me to come and test drive an interesting car. When I got there he handed me the keys keys to a weapons grade Audi RS6 Avant V10. Huge power, Huge torque, Huge grins and seriously gigglesome. I took one pass down the road and back to check for any errant police or speed camera vans... Then.... Bloody Hell... 0 - 150mph in a trouser filling, No time at all, with the feeling of a freight train power delivery. Hugely expensive at the time and If memory serves, either 8 or 9 mpg... What`s not to love. All these years later It`s a vivid memory.

I've got one of the plus run out models (161/500). Bought her at a year old and the idea of selling has never crossed my mind. MRC tuned, better springs, much bigger brakes with 8 pots and she's unbeatable. The newer shapes I keep finding too obvious or 'fussy' as you say. I cannot think of a single car I would replace her with as my daily driver. The speed change on the motorway still gives me goosebumps today.

Spot on regarding the grown-up subtle styling vs today's crop of fussy attention-seeking designs... I have an Allroad of the same generation and colour scheme with a (remapped) 400bhp 3.0 supercharged V6. It's no RS6 but can still be hustled when you need to, and quattro traction off the line is flawless. Even gives 30mpg on the motorway!
