A nice addition to this is to create a relation between your Book Vault and your Daily Tracker. This way at the end of the day you can quickly capture what book(s) you read + when you open the book vault you can see for each book on what days you digested them. For me, this helps as a reminder to review the most important books regularly.

Ok...so I've been following your series after discovering notion and was looking for a bit of understanding. i was following your full learning playlist (in order) and every video I see people commenting on how normally they don't use the bell, but for your content they do. Or how they are hyped when they see the notification. I didn't pay it too much mind. Then I came to the end of the playlist and...there was so much more I need to learn and implement...I just assumed I'd come to the end and be done....yet here I am excited for the next dose of organizational information. Thanks again for the great content August. You're going to build a very large following around productivity. Just keep putting in the work like you have and it will naturally develop.

@@augustbradley Totally understandable. The silver lining is that having no more "guided" tour I'm actually using the system now without being worried about wading to far down stream and having to undo/redo work. I'm starting to get a natural hang of it and understanding. I'm mirroring your setup in many ways for now so that I have a basis for understanding the system before fully adapting it to my personal system. I have plans for content creation, starting a business and using this for work / personal life so everything you're showcasing has value for me. As a bit of inspiration for you, I was going to pass on even using notion and stick to evernote as I felt that notion was a bit too all over the place and would take too much time to implement a system. Finding your channel is the reason I'm actually using notion. Your intro video about notion being a game changer and systems based thinking were absolutely the bit that caught my attention and your detailed course-like content has kept me hooked.

**Video Summary** 0:00 Intro This video will cover the book vaults We've now moved passed the pillars and pipelines sections of the PPV organizational structure and we are now diving deep into the Vaults section This is where we do knowledge management and store all the ideas and information that we turn into knowledge that we can use and apply to our projects, growth, and life in general. The last video provided an overview of the knowledge management system across the board giving a surface-level introduction to each of the components and a little bit about how they work together. The next videos will go deeper into each section starting with the book vault. Books are long-form media that take a lot of effort to consume and capture, but out of that effort, we get a lot more in return. In addition to the organizational structure of capturing information from books, the book vault will also be used to line up the books we want to read are actively reading creating a great queue. After you've read a book it creates a finished section with a complete archive of all the books you've ever read and all the information and knowledge you've extracted from them. 2:55 Database Setup Starting in the command center we open up the mind expansion dashboard which houses all these knowledge management systems. Under the knowledge sources section, the Library is where the book vault lives. The master table view is used most frequently because it presents all the information sorted and organized effectively. Fields 3:20 There is a relation to a database of influencers that august finds influential in the fields that he works in. Status and priority fields are used to sort 4:00 4:44 Print vs. eBook/Kindle vs. Audio Books The format is chosen based on the importance of the book's content Audiobooks can be sped through to get a quick overview of the contents of a book, but the cost is that you don't absorb the information as deeply as say reading a hardcopy or a kindle version of a book. It's easier to take high-quality notes from books that you read. When the book matters a lot, read it and highlight it Kindle books are easier to highlight and manage than paperback books It is now possible to integrate highlights from kindle with your notion system using the beta version of an app from Readwise which will be covered later. The idea of taking notes, summarizing, and highlighting lets you extract the maximum amount of value both in the moment you are doing it and also later on when you review it (allowing for spaced repetition) Prioritize how important a book is and based on that decide whether you are going to sit down and read it or listen to it in audio format. Even among those you sit down and read there are different levels of emphasis in terms of extracting information. Ones that you simply highlight, and then for really important books you can create chapter summaries. 8:26 Book Note-taking System At the end of every chapter create your own synthesized summary of the information you have just covered Even if you are just highlighting there is a system of progressive highlighting that August uses that has been optimized for Notion Progressive summarizing from building a second brain was optimized for Evernote Notion gives you quick access to a lot more colors. Orange is a mid-level highlight Ctr+Shift+H does an automatic highlight in the last remembered highlight color When something is particularly important red is used, yellow is a lower level emphasis relative to orange. This is a three-tier hierarchy of highlighting that August has found to be optimal. This gives a lot more nuance than the 2 tiered system from the second brain crowd. The list of completed books becomes an absolute goldmine. There are tags for various categories of books as well to help sort and filter. 13:08 New Book Capture & Entry Keep a wishlist of books that might be interesting to get on Amazon In Chrome, there is a plugin for the Notion web clipper Open the book you're interested in and open the clipper Open the page in Notion (this is the primary advantage of the Notion web clipper). Clean up the title from the Amazon format. Embed a link to the cover image Give it a status Give it a priority Give it a purpose Select a format After you read the book you assign the value rating 16:58 Vault Views Master table Progress Board Based on status Bookshelf Gallery view Bookshelf - To read Books finished 17:33 Closing Summary You could combine the book vault with the media vault, but August considers books to be very special and valuable and prefers to have them in a distinct group You can set up different filters to create the different categories if you prefer There are also different database properties and fields for books than for other media so it does have some logic to it. Next, we will cover the media vault and how we capture articles, videos, and podcasts This is similar to books but there some nuances and differences that will be covered The training academy will be covered in the next video as well This covers course information that is a little bit more different in terms of the information you're extracting. If the course is big it will be a lot more elaborate and you want to extract much more from it. Here you will be able to create a much more elaborate structure in terms of your note-taking. After that, we will get into the knowledge lab where all the information aggregates and all the information becomes much more usable in a much more comprehensive way across different topics. We'll look at how to capture notes and ideas quickly and have them reappear in the right context.

Once again a great video that solves a problem I've been struggling with - keeping track of books I want to read - without creating a separate place for them. Every morning, day, and evening I am in LOS but it isn't every day I find another book I want to read. ( I swear I have at least 4 notebooks somewhere where I started lists.) One minor suggestion to increase the impact of the Book Vault - at the minimum use Smile.Amazon.com for book purchases. Even better use something like Bookshop.com to support your local bookstore. Use your life operating System to improve the economic System and support local charities and bookstores. Oh yeah, and don't forget your local library for all formats of books.

The gallery view is really great, but you should use the “Reposition“ option when you hover over a gallery entry. When you do, you can drag the cover so that the full title is easily readable each time you open the gallery. From there, you can save the new position so that it will always appear that way.
@augustbradley4 жыл бұрын
Good tip, that's better for sure, I've actually shifted in my set up to the fit=-to-view modes so you can now see the entire cover. Will do an update video.

I’ve used both. The fit-to-view shows the entire cover, but they’re very small images in my experience. IMHO, the way you’re doing it looks better with the repositioning option. Not every title will fit perfectly, but the bookshelf appearance still looks better that way.

If you set an icon for a page then any links you make to that page automatically get the same icon - shrunk-down - just before the page name. Alternatively one can use emojis - but that messes up alphabetical sorting - emojis coming at the end of an ascending alpha sort.

I've built a Book Vault database, and seem to have everything working.... EXCEPT that the images of the book covers (derived from URL's from Amazon) appear as TINY little sub-postage stamp size images at the bottom of each block. I've poked around and looked at the "Properties" window (by clicking on the three dots icon near the top) and see that there are toggle switches for each of the fields.... the "Cover" toggle is turned on. I can right click on the cover image and do the "Edit Property" > 3 Dots > Full Screen or View Original" and get a much larger image, but the Gallery view just wants to display a tiny, 1/4" square sized image of the cover. Is it possible that these strange occurrences I'm having are because I am running the web based version of Notion, and not a resident app on my MacBook Pro?

Sorry maybe I missed it during the video but why don’t you combine books/films/articles... ? Sorry if you said it already
@Legendinium4 жыл бұрын
Hi Louis, this is addressed in the previous video in the series (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKfZpGp5n96GZ68). Short story long / my takeaway: You can combine the different databases (books, media, ...) if that makes sense for your workflow. Downside is that some fields then might only be relevant to certain types of entries, which you can address with views that show only relevant fields (e.g. a Films view and a separate Books view). Upside is that relational complexity is decreased (fever relations in other databases such as Notes & Ideas and Knowledge Lab).

@augustbradley4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you asked this Diffie, this should be emphasized. Yes, there's a very good reason. The top-level learning form the books funnels into the topic category in the Knowledge Lab DB, and the Knowledge Lab topics link all over the system. Each book is merely one input source to a topic you are gaining knowledge in (or to multiple topics). You want to aggregate the knowledge on the topic into a central location (the Knowledge Lab entries), and link that aggregated knowledge by topic, not link every source that contributed to it across Projects, Content, and other DBs. The previous video on the Knowledge Management overview demonstrates this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKfZpGp5n96GZ68

The Notion webclipper is a bit finicky, but 90-95% I find it brings the contents over. Are you clipping from Amazon? I have had success there.

When I bring up the gallery view, I am seeing a very small picture of the book cover I uploaded. Any insight on how to make sure the book title takes up the entire card in gallery view?
@diffiehm64904 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have the same issue. When I put the picture in page and then go to gallery view I can have a big version of the book cover. But when I put it in a "files" field as August showed I can only get a post stamp size picture in the gallery view.

Make sure in Properties the "Cover" is set to the file.

@@augustbradley Ah yes, now I see. So you should not enable the "Cover" as a property. But instead in Card preview, you select "Cover". For some reason I missed that 😉 Thanks

Curious, is it necessary to split books/media vaults into separate databases? Alternatively, one could keep them together with a simple “reference_type” field for filtering purposes. What are your thoughts on that?

You'd need to copy the Image address and Upload as an embedded link (under the Book Cover field/parameter) to achieve the bookshelf view August has. I hope this helps.
Another fantastic video. Thanks, August! One question--when I use the Notion Web Clipper in Chrome for Amazon, it doesn't clip the book summary. Any tips on how to make that happen?

Chrome yes, Firefox no... Worked for me just now - from Chrome on Mac Catalina - first time I've ever tried it on Amazon (URL smile.Amazon.co.uk) - with both Notion web clippers that I know of - the older "Save to Notion" and the newer, more sophisticated "Notion Saver". But from Firefox, neither web-clipper saved any contents (even though, in the new webclipper, I had created an appropriate "Form" with "Save contents" (or whatever) enabled).

FYI, using image links is faster and easier but if the owner of the link changes the address or when uploading the image they change the name of it you'll loose that image.

Have you actually given a "Crap" rating to a book? Also, I'm thinking of adding a review of the book itself below the notes inside the pages. You can't give something a rating with a specific, well thought-out reason for it.
