Aurora was inspired to write this song after a dream, saying in an interview: “Black Water Lilies was a dream I had. The melody was playing in the background. And I was dreaming that there was a hand, and I grabbed it, and it took me underwater. And there was a river, unter the water, running down. And I floated on the river, under the water, and I came to this magic place with lots of black water lilies - floating on the water - which was underneath the water. It was a very strange dream. When I woke up I ran straight to the piano and wrote the song.”

Part of the reason I loved conqueror was because of a video of her performing it on Jimmy Fallon. the coolest thing recently happened to me. i had a dream about floting on a beautiful river, turquoise water and blue skies, with lush green plants on the side. this song was playing in the background as i floated down. every time i got to rapids it was like someone reached out for me and pulled me under, but i could still breathe, and it was like there was a whole other land under the water. and once the rapids were done i would surface and there would be thousands of black lilies. eventually i got to a waterfall and fell down it, except it was more like i was gently placed down instead of falling. and there was a large, deep pool of water where all the water from the river gathered. i floated there and thought to myself, “this would’ve been the most beautiful dream ever”. and then i woke up and it was a dream, which was kind of sad 😅. but i rarely listened to this song and the fact that aurora also based it off of a dream she had which sounds very similar to mine, is kind of crazy. this song was playing the entire time in the background. i’ll never forget that dream, i truly felt at peace then 💙
