As I understand it, the Panzer 1 was initially developed, at a time when Germany was still prevented from building any tanks, as a training tank and to help develop armoured vehicle doctrine and tactics. So the thin armour is understandable.

I have done US half tracks, when doing the brakes, I used off the shelf truck parts, they were the same and those parts are available still. Because of manufacturing standards, we are now seeing parts that have been in use across many different machines since for 130 years. This will continue, why after all invent a new bearing and give it a new number when there is no need.

@aserta

@@oldfarthacks There are some part number changes and some bearing lines do die out, but yeah, for the most part, anything built within 130 or so years, maybe even a bit more... you can use off the shelf parts. That's standardization for ya.

You were struggling with removing steel bolts from cast aluminum and there is a very simple trick which works very well in that the maximum expansion of aluminum happens at 100 deg C while steel needs much higher temperatures to move. All you have to do is drop the casting into boiling water and allow it to come up to temperature, the aluminum expands by as much as 10% while the steel wont expand at all. This works so well that Rolls Royce use it as their preferred method for removing liners from the merlin blocks and from experience they almost drop out. Could save you a lot of work

they were basically only for training purposes,as the war came much faster than anticipated by the germans. if you dont believe,check with admiral raeder,he was convinced by hitler,no action before 1943/5. AND,the P1 still had to be built under disguise from the other powers's eyes!

In 1939 the Pz II was still pretty good. Although its armour was too thin, the 20mm auto-cannon could punch through anything the Poles had. The armour on many Pz II’s was upgraded for the France campaign in 1940 but the cannon couldn’t scratch the better French tanks.

"better tanks"...its all about the usage of motoriced power and you can have 100 t tanks divided to the infantry and will never achieve nothing...the german had these two types(1+2) mainly as training units,as the former restrictions and the transportation capabilities didnt allow heavier ones. the technical capabilities would have been there,but were'nt used@@sirrathersplendid4825

Wow, a running Panzer I ausf. B ? That is amazing! I personally love the tiny Panzer I so much, i built more than 50 of them in different scales myself for Wargaming or just stand alone Models in 1/35 and 1/16 and i am amazed to see the real deal here, as an Model kit for grown up men^^ The Hatch with the green spray paint on it is definitvely a entry Hatch from a "kleiner Panzerbefehlswagen I" aka Sd. Kfz. 265 and not part of an original Panzer I Ausf B, but hey, maybe with Time you guys can add one to the collection and it may come in handy for that. I am looking forward to see the progress on this Tank, and i hope that it will become as perfect as every runner that you guys build before. p.s. it is amazing to see the difference in quality to f.e. the Stug III that you guys started to restore, you can clearly see that the Panzer I was no "war time" Vehicle on the clenliness of the production, and to see swiss ball bearings in a german Tank is a definite proof that this Tank was build before the start of WW II and had to fight a war which it was not built or ment for. Just amazing to see such a rare Tank come together and learning so much about it in the process. keep up your amazing work! Greetings from germany

24:00 i have pressed that kind of steel thickness into a dish for my brother's farm machines in the past. It's not that difficult. A 90 ton hydraulic hollow ram would do short work of that kind of steel. You just need to manufacture the parts where the metal doesn't need to bend. When i talked with a fellow that worked in the industry for advice, he called them the "pinch points" (might be lost in translation). In simple terms, you need to have the surfaces that become the flat flanges where you bolt things pinched by two pieces of tightly bolted material that become both form and holder for the part. Once you have those, you can push them out as fast as your hands can work them. In my specific case, i only needed the outer segment to be a controlled surface, the inner one could have any shape, as it was to be welded, but it works out really easy. Truncated cones like that don't offer much drama at all.
