Small note on the Deff Dread. There's enough options for 2 of them in the box you just need another base and a body to attach it to, an old Citadel Shade pot works perfectly fine

I respect ork players because of the sheer amount of collecting they have to do in order to play. It’s an impressive investment just to get to a 2k army never mind having options. As an ork player with a 5K army ebay is your best friend. Black reach Boyz, Nobz and Kopterz are really cheap, and if you're creative cheap broken vehicle kits are great for conversion. Think I spent around £500-600 with only 3 third party mek gunz.

Awesome Video as always. I'd like to mention some things in terms of kitbashing. 1. The Dakka jet kit: You get tons of extra bits in here. With another Scale model Plane you can easily make another Orky Flyer out of it, maybe even two. Plus lots of extra Rokkits etc. 2. The Standard Ork Boyz kit. You can convert these guys into everything. I've done: Tankbustas, Kommandos and Burnas. There are a lot of 3rd party bitz for them and combining them with extra parts from other Ork kits yields a lot of potential. (Nearly the same goes for nobz) 3. Meganobz: Don't glue in the "Hands" You can easily swap them out for the other options. And Magnetize one of the Banners of one of them. This way you can swap it out for the KFF oder Tellyporta Blasta. You can use the extra penal that goes on top of one to make it into the Mek kit for a better surface area. Honorable mentions: New Kommandos Kit. You get tons of extra bitz to convert even more Kommandos in combination with the boyz kit. Burnas/Lootas. As Auspex mentioned in combination with the standard boyz kit you can easily make the other variant you didn't build with the spare parts of the Kit.
@richmcgee434
@richmcgee434 Жыл бұрын
The jet kit is another decent source of shooty weapons for Deff Dreds if you want to use them as gun platforms - as AT noted that kit doesn't come with the best mix for that role. Killa kans also work well for that. When buying burna/loota kits you really might as well budget for a boyz kit for every ~2.5 of the elite/heavy kit you buy. You'll need them. Also worth considering how best to minimize the spanna tax in both units, since the current limits are a 1:7, 2:11 or 3:12 ratio between them and the troops. 2:10 is very popular IME, since that neatly fills a trukk. That can slightly reduce the number of extra bodies you need, of course.

Newer ork boys (starting around the Speed Freeks box) all seem to have orkish microcephaly, with tiny heads with little chins, foreheads, and not all that many funny hats. I ended up using older and 3rd party heads on all of my newer ork models (Kommandos, New Boyz, Beastsnaggas, Squig Hog Boyz, etc...) just so they fit in with all of my older boyz. Runtherds make fine Weirdboyz with their various staves, so the Gretchin box is a bit of a steal. You get a cheap troops unit and a possible HQ psyker character all for about $20, when often a character alone costs more.

@richmcgee434
@richmcgee434 Жыл бұрын
Meanwhile, Frostgrave's cultist kit is $35 for 20 figs, fully modular, and comes with tons of spare bits. And you could grab any of the similar Stargrave kits and do arm swaps to get some tech weapons on your cultists. Or just ask any Xgrave player for hep, their bits boxes are bulging. Plus their figs are not quite as chunky as GW stuff is, so your CSM masters will look properly huge next to their minions. So yeah, screw monopose GW.

Agreed. Much better for modelling opportunities, far more spare parts, just all around superior on everything but style. Plus the "old look" is inescapable, given that so much of the rest of the range uses the same aesthetic. Lootas and burnas have the same boyz bodies and legs, Stormboys are proportioned the same way, tankbustas - well, tankbustas are usually plastic boyz with rokkit launches, right? The resin kit's a bad joke.
@B__C__

All the newer boyz seem to be suffering orkish microcephaly, and lack the previous design's facial expressions, and penchant for funny hats. I had to use older ork, fantasy orruk, and 3rd-party heads for my beastsnaggas, squig hog boyz, new kommandos, and new boyz (I got one kit off of ebay for about $10) just so that they would fit in with all my older boyz. And I have to say they all look pretty cool. Also, the ball and socket design for the older boyz' waists, and head and necks and the interchangeability of the arms and heads between kits is pure genius and a feature that really encourages kitbashing.

That's not even originally a killsaw, it's on the frame because it was one of the bionic bit upgrades they used to be able to take. Same with the prodder arm, that used to be a bionic harpoon gun for reeling in enemies. Old cybork nobs were 2nd edition levels of whimsically goofy. I'm surprised they didn't give us a body with a unicycle monowheel instead of legs.

Technically, all of those rotary saw bladed axe-looking things (that people run as "big choppas") are kill saws as well. If you compare them to the kill saws on the Mega Armored Nobz they're the same weapon, they are 'saws' it's just the non-armored nobz mounted them on long poles. When I run them I run them as either, after all if they've run out of gas they could still be used as a big choppa.

I always tought that the price-point ratio is a bit wierd, I mean yes it calculates how many points you are buying in game, but then again model costing less points when updated in an army usually is a good thing, so then again unless the models are not that great maybe it's a fair point to value the price-point, but if it is a good model and isn't overly pricey I'd say it is still good. Of all the insultings things 9th did, I think the way it betrayed Ork players by pretending it was finally their turn to get the model refresh they deserved to then giving them the middle finger is probably the saddest. What did the ork really needed? Updates to their core units: Boyz, Nobs, MegaNobs, Flashgitz, Burna/Lootas, Stormboyz and all their HQ. What did they got instead? First they got baited with the propect of a brand new and shiny boyz kit that turned out to the literally not fit for purpose, so bad in its extreme monopose and limited wargear that they had to keep the old kit in production, an admission in itself of how much they fucked up. Then they got a bunch of updated new HQ, ALL of them being monopose and without any options, even the big boss, but instead of being just refresh of the very old HQ, the rest was NEW HQ. No, that's not a Painboy or Weirdboy, that's a Painboss and Wurdboy! Totly different, pls buy. And instead of delivering any of the previously mentioned update, GW did what they always do with thos "refresh" and just decided to focus on releasing more new stuff than updaing the old one, and this time it came with a bunch of frankly ridiculous and cartoonish looking "cyber-savage" boys that feel more like they came from horizon zero dawn than 40k At the end of the day, Orks are still in the same dreadful spot than they were at the start of the edition, having all their core units still being 25years old miniatures, but now GW has managed to craft the narrative that "they totally got a new range update recently". Right. They got Komandos and Kopters I guess.... I'm not even an Ork player and I feel insulted.

The Weirdboy staff breaks super easy. This is the single biggest gotcha GW has. Looks awesome and fluffy, if not a little dated, but breaks at the slightest nudge of the staff. It is best to use the AoS Weirdnob or kitbash one with the AoS and 40K bits.

@richmcgee434
@richmcgee434 Жыл бұрын
It's not hopelessly bad at that, but a battlewagon is faster, about as durable, probably 30-50 points cheaper depending on loadout, and has twice the carrying capacity and (potentially) more of its own firepower. With a roller it's not even worse at melee. It'd help if the silly thing had the Squig keyword instead of Squiggoth for some Snakebite & Snagga synergy, but it doesn't at the moment. I guess it's at its best with the heavy guys (so tankbustas and flash gitz) as long as it doesn't advance but lootas and skorchas and the rare shooty nob setups are probably better in wagons.

The new boyz being monopose AND forcing you to take 3 shootas and a nob in a box is the biggest crime GW have done in a while and doesn't get nearly as much flak as it should. I've been waiting well over 10 years for an ork refresh to get into the faction and now it's finally here it's all monopose garbage that gives you zero freedom.

@richmcgee434

I mean, the sculpts are nice enough (or were back when they were metal, at least) but the weapon choices are idiotic so you're buying dead models. But yeah, I'm at 10 dedicated tankbustas and they're all just rokkit launcha boyz and a few converted fantasy squigs for bombs. I got fancy with converting them so they're all unique, but still the boyz kit at the heart of things. If GW had any sense, they do a modular frame packed with ork bodies, then make compatible frames for each of the specialists to bundle with them. Throw in unit-appropriate bits as well as weapons and you could cover the who infantry range in under ten frames total, maybe thirteen or fourteen adding in the nob variant types. Instead, well got bloody monopose boyz and that daft snagga kit. Idiots.

@@DavidBretton Oh, 100% on that. I've worked for a couple of different little tiny resin casting business that literally ran out of their garages and we'd never had dared send out stuff as sloppily cast as GW does. They're an embarrassment to the industry, and everyone with any experience in it just looks at their quality and cost and laughs. Thankfully, rokkit launchas are easy to come by in trade if you need them. Most ork players just kind of natuarlly accumulate an excess of them, especially now that they're heavy instead of assault and don't work so well in boyz or kommando mobz.

Hey, something I have a real, non-snarky opinion about. A rarity these days. The shitty monopose boyz are also hugely overpriced ($50 for 10 versus $38 for 11 compared to the real version) which significantly decreases the real value of the combat patrol. As for the original boyz, they remain in production partly because you need them to build the other half of the even more grossly inefficient loota/burna box, since you'll be chucking 40% of that box unless you use some standard boyz bodies to build the whole thing. The grot box provides you with quite a lot of extra grot heads, which not only improves variety it lets you do the classic "pinhead ork" conversion on the regular boyz, which look hilarious and piss off purists. The runtherd is easily converted into many things, although the basic boy is probably easiest. The two ends of his staff are enormously useful bits for conversions as well, making this kit really quite a bargain, especially if you don't mind using a specialist boyz slot on 'orrible gits anyway. Note that the AoS "orruk" range also includes several shaman figures that can make good replacements for the failcast resin weirdboy fig, although like all GW characters they're stupidly overpricxed. If you do go that route, the weirdnob shaman is probably the easiest to work with, and is plastic to boot. Very easy to "tech up" a bit if you want. Kommandos are a nice kit for duopose, but for 40K most of the potential is just wasted. The upgrades that are so cool in KT are largely a waste on a 40K table and you'll generally wind up just going slugga/choppa with most of the unit. Even at that they're expensive (in both $ and points) for what they do, especially if they face off against forward deployment blockers (eg infiltrators). Even in cover they really aren't at all hard to shift if the enemy has decent AP, and in a meta where AoC exists everyone reaches for that. At least the extra gubbins and bits will be useful for conversions. Meganobz are a fairly useful kit for bits, and it's important to note that you get both a KFF and the tellyporta blasta with it, so not only are both options there, you could opt to build two big meks with minimal effort. Easy enough to nick an extra kustom mega-blasta from a dreadnought or spanna frame if you really must have one. The burna/loota boxes have to be looked at from the POV of needing a $38 box of boyz for every two-and-a-half of the elite/heavy kits, which drives the cost up some. Also (owing to how bad a value the spanna tax is) you really want to consider maximizing the number of actual troops in a unit, so 1:7, 2:11, or the max 3:12 are the limits. IME 2:10 is the most popular owing to it filling a trukk, although 1:7 offers the best ratio and doesn't put as many eggs in one basket. Also think you're slightly undervaluing lootas, if you have the CP strat support can bump their effectiveness up quite a lot and their dakka weapons make them a decent choice as the "main battery" of an open-topped battlewagon. They still struggle with AoC and high saves in general, but they're kind of reasonably priced for what they offer. The nob kit is a joy to work with but be aware that their arms do not fit on regular boyz (including the boyz nob) very well despite using the same kind of flat connection points. The nobs are noticeably larger as you'd expect. It's a shame they aren't more viable in 9th, although they are arguably the best choice for your trukkboy specialist mob. Just don't waste them on the wrong target and don't fail your charge. Tankbustas are a unit I can't see ever buying as such. Just build them out of the plethora of spare boyz with rokkit launchas you'll have laying around after a while, and maybe convert a few fantasy squigs into bombs if you really want them. You weren't ever going to take the other silly optional weapons anyway unless you're just joking around. They aren't just for vehicle killing - at 16 points a shot a d3 shot blast effect weapon is going to earn its points back in short order just shelling units with 6+ models, and 5-model units often cost so many ppm they're still viable targets. The trick is getting in range and surviving long enough to shoot at full BS, which makes them a lot more attractive in Bad Moons, although Freebootas can make good use of them too. Stormboyz aren't a good value $ wise, but they do have the minor advantage of having mostly cross-compatible arms with the regular boyz kit. They have some unique bits, so swapping between the two kits can add a bit more visual variety to both units. A small benefit that maybe doesn't make up for the cost, but $7 a model is actually not high by GW standards. Squigpigs are a cute kit and all, but if you're a traditionalist (as any proper snakebite clanner should be) you can get proxy models much, much cheaper by repurposing the bonesplittas orruk boar riders and doing some light conversion work and a rebasing onto a more suitable size. The bigger brute cavalry over there could also work as nobs on smasha squigs, and I already mentioned converting gloomspite squigs into bombs. At $6 apiece instead of ~$15 the pig riders are vastly cheaper than the squigpigs, albeit smaller and needing more work. And yes, there is a local in my mostly 2nd-ed circle whose snakebite army is largely composed of fantasy figs. He's been great to trade with, only person I know who actually wants spares from the boyz kits. :) Warbikes benefit a fair bit from Bad Moons kultur as well. Increasing their dakka range to 12/24" is a pretty big deal if they're trying to shoot at full power without getting stuck in afterward. If you're in an environment that allows Legends they're probably badly outshown by big shoota wartrakks, though. Those things are murder. Flash gitz are not, despite the pirate motif, actually tied to freebootaz. They arguably work a lot better in Bad Moons (like many shooty orks) and that extra point of base WS is a big deal for them when comparing to slot competition like lootas. They do need some help staying alive (eg the mobile damage sponge know as a trukk, or the tellyporta bighead fort trick) but at 25 ppm they aren't a hopeless, especially with strat support. The models themselves are busy, but well designed. Note that Killa Kans are a fine way to get some ranged weapon spares for your Deff Dreds if you want. No KMBs, but you can maybe mine those from loota/burna spannas if you don't mind some conversion work.

@@liveanotheranime3526 If you're using dreds as well, you can easily poach some of their weapons to add a lot more variety to the builds. That kit comes with two big shootas, two rokkit launchas, one skorcha and two close combat arms that are all fully compatible with the kan bodies (plus two KMBs that the kans can't use). Also has three or four melee weapons that the cans don't plus some that are duplicated, and all of its melee weapons are cross compatible with the kan arms - the ball-and-socket joints are identical sizes. The dred body can take any of the kan arms on its two lower sockets, but teh upper sockets are too big for them. Only thing to be careful about is the dred "upper arm" assemblies, which have shoulder balls too big for the kans (or its own lower sockets) despite using the same size socket at the "hand" end of things. I find a 2:1 ratio of kan:dred kits works best for me, but throwing an extra dred in if you're doing a lot (like 12+ individual kans) would ease the parts pinch a bit. Some kitbashing helps too.
