I'd say that if you're starting a CSM collection, the veterans is a better deal. However as someone who already has 20 legionaries and 10 terminators, the dread talons is more interesting.

If I didn't already have 10 terminators and a 20 legionaires, it would be great :D The problem with the second box I think is the age of the raptor models, If we'd had a refresh of those and it was 10 new models then it would be a lot more tempting.

If you’re starting csm, getting both is amazing. 1600+ pts with a high diversity of units. You can then get a combat patrol to get a cheaper 2k pts or buy specific units to complete your army.

As someone working on a Night Lords army that has no Warp talons, loves cultists, and want a jump lord and love the demon prince.... the Dread talon box is basically made for me lol. I wanted to pick up all of those individually anyway!

My problem with Veterans of the Long War is that already have multiple duplicates of those units, while i have No raptors, no jumpack lord/harkeem, 1 accursed cultists, 1 dark commune and 1 daemon prince (its my fav miniature i dont mind getting an army of those) Dread talons is a perfect match to complete my army.

I'm impressed with the offerings but because I have interest waiting for Emperor's Children, there's no guarantee that even a single unit featured would be a part of that range. World Eaters served as a useful precedent by which it became half the size of what it was before they even existed as an army. If I see a terrific deal at a third party shop that offers a discount I may consider it but otherwise the boxes may only be most useful to people deeply committed to the more broad CSM sphere of things.

If you’re gunning for EC, I think you’re dead on the money. IF GW introduces an EC stand alone army, the core of it will be new models and units, maybe even 1-2 special demon engines or vehicles.

The only thing that gives me pause for Emperors Children is the Fulgrim Daemon model released for the HH series. GW ain’t likely to make another one soo damn close to that release, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they skip over EC and bring out Word Bearers. They have this weird aversion to EC, more so than the poor Night Lords.

Been thinking about starting a word bearers army for a while now. These boxes might just be what pushes me over the edge. My friend is starting up a World Eaters army and i figure maybe he and i can do a sort of escalation league to help motivate us to paint. With these two and the old and new combat patrol i think i'll have the majority of the csm range covered. I do have a question about the give away which I'll definitely be entering. Will the results of said giveaway be announced before the boxes go on sale? I'd hate to miss the boxes because i was waiting for the result of the giveaway draw. But at the same time I'd hate to buy them and then, as unlikely as it is, win the draw.

I was planning to start a Night Lords army when the Kill Team is released, and the Dread Talon battleforce box seems like an ideal complement to that. I chould fill out my new Nightlords army with either a second Dread Talon box or buy the Veterans of the Long War box instead. I already own 5700 points of CSM models for my Black Legion army, including everything in the new battleforce boxes except the new Chaos Lords. I can probably spare some units from Black Legion and repaint and customize them as Night Lords. I haven’t used my Raptors squad or Warp Talons squad in a Black Legion list since 10e launched; I could swap them to Night Lords to supplement the Dread Talons box. However, if the CSM codex is similar to the SM codex, it will feature a CSM detachment themed for the Night Lords, presumably favouring jump pack units and elites, making it unnecessary to convert my models into Night Lords. But I really like the look of the Night Lords Kill Team! A lot to think about!

I just purchased both boxes, and the new and old Combat Patrols, now I’m trying to decide on how I want to paint them. I was probably just going to add a Forge/Mauler Fiend, some rhinos, maybe a Heldrake, more cultists, more Chosen, and more Raptors, and Warp Talons. Maybe a chaos Land Raider, and a Predator, and Vindicator.

For me though both boxes arent interesting since i own either nearly the half box or just see any reason why i need more that i wont play with. Also i still have enough still to paint so im busy. The only miniature that i might get is the Chaos Lord on foot since he is quiet nice, but i`ll wait till he becomes a separate box.

That long war box looks like a great place to start collecting CSM and adding the talon box would be good for getting an almost full army easy and cheap (for GW standards). I'm definitely tempted but I don't really need another army to build right now :D

My first 40k purchase was the chaos cultists for kill team. So I think I would get the veterans kit. Cultists are super cool models I just don’t know if I need another full set of that line as opposed to 100% new models.

The Veterans box set is awesome to me. That Chaos Lord looks awesome and the units in there are all stuff I want. I love me some Terminators and the Choses are flexible elites.

The veterans of the Long war pack is the best for starting the faction. (But 1 of each seems ideal) For us who allready are veterans of the Long War, the Dread Talon seems the best option, lots of newer kits we havn't filled up on yet in our collection.

Hm, first I got the old CP box with the Venom Crawler, then got my hand on the Versus-Box half with the Warpsmith, then the premium stuff from the Imperium mag. The DA/Vashtor box, the Boarding Patrol, the Ashes of Faith KillTeam box and some weeks ago I also got the current CP box and a single kit of Termis. Over all both boxes are still attractive to me but I think the box with the votlw box is slightly ahead. But: I won't buy neither of both boxes because I'm at the beginning of my master thesis and have much less time for building & painting my collection.

Plan on picking up the Dread Talons box if I can get one before it sells out. I have a relatively smaller CSM army with a few thousand points worth of models and I actually have NONE of the models in the Talons box, so definitely would be helpful for me to get my hands on it. Don't need anything in the Veterans box though.

Well you can get more out of the Vet box depending. If you get extra bits from Chosen and Possessed, you can slap those on the regular chaos space marine troops, bump both evenly to 10 with possessed with midgets and 10 chosen which share the same base size as the troops. Making it an elite box. 10 Possessed, Chosen and Terminators and 1 New Chaos Lord. With the extra bits you could turn him into a character I imagine. Best value to me. With the Dread Talon box it isn't bad at all. You could shave off 10 to 20 dollars if you want a deamon prince but not a fan of it's looks, by getting Abbodumb or Gillermon who share the same base size, the latter you can slap extra bits on and chaos him up. In the end I'd have killed for these boxes a couple of years ago. If you know Chaos is your faction, grab the Combat Patrol while it's still around too.

Both are really good boxes with units you would want as a CSM player. for me i want the Dread Talons as i got enough Termies, Possessed and Legionaries, but missing jump infantry, and more cultists could be fun :D

Definitely a good start to csm if you're new to it. However i am still appalled we didn't get new raptors. They could be doing what they did with the genestealers and trying to get sprues sitting around out the door and releasing new ones soonish but who knows

I just buy to paint, not play, so i never cared for the game-play aspect of boxes. That being said, I was never interested in buying and painting CPM with only a few units(like the daemon prince) looking interesting. But I might buy these to go with my still unpainted Home-brew loyalist chapter. There's a lot of nice looking minis including the new chaos lords that I would love to paint once I fully get into it.

I'll have maybe one Dread Talon and Two Of the Veterans of the Long War. I'm purely building for Apocalypse at this point. I got to 6 of of each core unit. And at least 3 of everything else a decade or more ago. So now it's just making sure I've got a decent force for each of the primary legions. so glad I'm getting some new upgrades fir the night lords. Would love an upgrades with hoods and halos, and an accursed halo and crozius for the leader. For my word bearers. That'd be sick. Anyways good looking boxes. My Iron Warriors army is pretty vast already, otherwise I would be down for either. While I do like the new Lords, they'd at least need head swaps to look like sons of Perturabo. Most of the time, generic CSM fail to look appropriately 4th Legion. I mean, where are my hazard stripes supposed to go? 😅

It's going to be annoying for people that the Legionaries are the basic kit rather than the Kill Team version. Though the Balefire tome is a bit of a side-grade, you're also missing out on the two heavy melee weapons (basically powerfists) and the extra heavy weapons, which can add quite a bit of value to the squad. It would've been nice if there were at least some Havocs in the box so you could pinch one of their spare guns.

Luckily for me nothing in these boxes scream "must have!" The raptor box looks grea but mostly because of the cultistpart for kill team. If the new night lord sets would be available then i would most likely startet a night lord arms with one of the boxes. I can work on mx existing pos in peace leaving this one out.

i already have 3000 points of CSM. I am still gonna buy both lmao. VoTW box is great because it rounds out some of my 5 mans to 10 mans liek with possessed, chosen and terminators. another 10 troops can never go wrong. the 5 spare terminators are gonna go to my World Eaters Army. DT will be nice because it will round out my 5 man of raptors and my 5 man of warp talons to both 10 mans. i dont have any cultists of any type so those 3 kits will be nice and Daemon princes are my favourite model and i will always be wanting another one.
