Army and Navy are actual Military Academics in the US. Army represents the Military Academy At West Point, New York. Navy represents the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. There's also the Air Force Falcons, who represent the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

The US Coast Guard Academy also plays Football, but at a lower level than the Air Force/Space Force, Army, or Navy/Marine Corps. I mention the Space Force and Marines because they attend their respective Department’s academy (Department of the Air Force, Department of the Army, and Department of the Navy).

It is a great game to watch. They mentioned Navy quarterback Roger Staubach - who graduated from the Naval Academy, and then served 4 years in the Navy - including a 1 year tour in Vietnam, before joining the Dallas Cowboys, becoming a Hall of Fame quarterback, and played in 4 Superbowls, winning 2 of them.

They are now in the same conference for the first time ever. The AAC, American Athletic Conference. So this game now has even more significance, a conf title on the line .
@Carly_SIU
@Carly_SIU 15 күн бұрын
Actually, it won't. Since the game takes place the weekend after conference championship weekend, it's actually treated as a non-conference matchup. This is so they don't have to change the date of the AAC championship game and the Army-Navy game. AP News article: "The addition puts Army and Navy football in the same conference. But their traditional, end-of-the-season, standalone matchup will remain a nonconference game so it can be played after conference championships."

@Carly_SIU I know but figured that would be to complicated to explain. You know if one win the AAC they will hold it over the other. Both are competing for the same AAC title now .

What makes the service academy games so special to Americans is that, while these are the most difficult colleges to get into, and the students are put through hell while there to harden the future officers and leaders of the U.S. military, these are the only games where every player is willing to die someday for every spectator. This video was boring and you wouldn't understand the emotion behind the game at all by watching it. However, the pre-game video that is produced for the game by the national broadcasters each year will put a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye as they remind you how special these kids are, and how fortunate we are that America still produces young people of this caliber.

This is one of the best rivalries and I watch this game every year! There are two aspects of this rivalry he didn't mention. First is, at the end of the game the winning team lines up in front of the losing team's side of the stadium and sings that school (the losing team's) alma mater, they then march to the opposite side of the field (the winners) and sing theirs. It's a great show of sportsmanship at the end of what is usually a tough physical game. The second thing he forgot is that there is an annual "prisoner exchange" that takes place prior to the game. You should google their traditions, there are several that are quite fun. I personally loved the year that the Navy dropped a bunch of ping pong balls that said Fly Navy and Beat Army on them onto the academy grounds at West Point. They called it "Operation Black Knight Falling." They can get really creative with videos and stuff to taunt each other prior to the game.

From a pure football strategy standpoint, this is personally one of my favorite matchups to watch every year. Both teams run a triple option offense, and not many teams still run that style these days. It's a very run heavy system with very few passes being thrown down the field, designed to ultimately have multiple options on any given play to attack a defense on the ground. It's a real throwback to what football used to look like decades ago, with so many modern teams opting for pass heavy offenses that spread the field. Since both teams run systems that are so similar, the game usually ends up being a low scoring defensive battle with a very close final score.

The US Military Academy at West Point, New York is Army. The US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland is Navy. There is also an Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. The Marines are a corps of the Navy so Navy and Marines officers are both at the Naval Academy. These are the schools where future generals and admirals are trained.

I have nothing but respect for every single branch of the Military. My family has a history of at least one Person throughout every generation serving, most recently being my Nephew just going within the last month into the Army. That being said, I will forever be a Navy fan since one of my Uncles made it to Master Chief, took us on His carrier when I was young, and I spent summers with Him and our Family in San Diego, where He was stationed, year upon year, even giving up a trip to Hawaii to be with them. Good times. No disrespect to anyone in any other branch. Also, there are no stupid questions if you are willing to learn.

These are considered college teams, even though they are military academies. They're competitive entry, they're 'free' and they're all college-aged. They get a bachelor's degree, and then must serve a minimum of five years in the military. While at the Academies they are both college students and active duty.

Obviously, the Navy is a superior team, however, the boys across the field are their brothers in arms, both signing up to defend their country. The hate is only for that game and that game only...and occasionally a bar fight or three. The Air Farce (sorry, FORCE) are the babies of the American Military world, forming shortly after WWII from the Army Air Corps. So they don't have the history. FYI: THe Marine Corps have been part of the Navy so long. Their officers attend Annapolis so technically it is Navy/Marine Corp, but we didn't want them to have even bigger heads than they have now. Seriously, as a former Naval Petty Officer (working in the aviation field), the rivalry is only for the game. They are our brothers, our friends, and comrades. Just not on the football field.

The best part of this game is that none of those guys will be NFL players, they’ll literally be the officers in charge of the men on the frontlines of Americas war machine. These are soldiers and sailors attending the two major US military academies. When they graduate, they don’t get cushy corporate jobs, they become new military officers and get deployed to their duty stations.

College Football has existed since 1869. The forward pass was made legal in 1906. 4th Down was added in 1912. Deaths in College Football in the late 1800s early 1900s nearly got the sport banned. The NFL formed in 1920. The oldest NFL team is the Arizona Cardinals who were formed in 1898. Only 2 of the NFL's original teams, the Bears and Cardinals still exist. The Packers were not one of the NFL's original teams, even though they formed in 1919.

@@filanfyretracker Agreed. Not only that they could even sell out their season tickets in the 70s and 80s when they mostly had losing seasons. @@JustEdit22 I can promise you, if you actually support one of these teams, it is the most stress inducing experience as a fan because it’s extremely difficult for either side to score a TD. As a fan, you feel absolutely helpless watching the other team slowly advance the ball 3-5 yards at a time. And if you’re trailing by a score it’s so hard to score to tie it up again and neither side can score very quickly. I would say pick one team to root for next time, and just know that your entire season is viewed as a success or failure based solely on whether you win or lose this ONE game. Coaches are hired and fired across all sports teams at the academy based on winning their Army/Navy match/game/dual. Then add into it that even the non student-athletes who are all required to be in attendance have weekend liberty passes on the line if their team doesn’t win. Suddenly it gets a lot more entertaining.
