@Matthewjphotos5 ай бұрын
As a proud Penn State Alum, you are 1000% correct in saying it is electric! I would even go as far as saying out-of-this-world electric! That's a very fitting description because it's more than just loud, as many loud things aren't electric. Watching this makes the hairs on my arms stand up, getting goosebumps. I had the great fortune to be a photographer for the PSU yearbook, so I was at field level for every home game, and when I tell you that, standing next to me, my other yearbook photographers and I had to yell at the top of our lungs, like you're in a nightclub to even hear each other it's soooooooo loud. While Beaver Stadium is officially listed at something like 106,700 capacity, they fill in way more, regularly 110,000 plus. And I understand the disconnect for you, to see this level for college sports, while you don't do that at all in Australia. But colleges bring in loads of $$$$$$$, through endorsement deals with companies like Nike, Adidas, Gatorade, the broadcasting rights the colleges sell to the networks, etc. To put it in perspective, Penn State's Beaver Stadium will be undergoing a $700 MILLION renovation to make it more modern. $700, not $7 million, it's close to $1 billion!! (kzbin.infopXaeHkR2us8?si=JJJKMx1fwC8Vo8pN) The video you watched is great, but it's the video camera feed for the network for their floating eye-above-the-field camera staying static for most of it on one section of the stadium, so you didn't get a full experience of the full white out and its scale. Here's some videos to give you a full taste of what Penn State Football games are like in a whiteout, plus our iconic singing along to Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline". Enjoy! And I forgot to mention that one of the reasons why Americans LOVE and go crazy for their college football and sports in general, if not more than the professional leagues, is that as a college student, unlike any pro team, you are a part of it for life from the moment you get accepted to study there. It's where you study and work your butt off to get good grades and graduate. It's also where you party a lot, sometimes too much. It's where you make lifelong friends with students, professors, etc. Some people meet their future partners there. And on top of all that, now add in the type and level of atmosphere around sports that you see in these videos, and you fall in love with your college school spirit x10,000 for life. While technically no, you're not a football player, being there as the fans, influencing and making it hard for the opposing team, you become a part of the game.

Some soccer/Euro football guys will chuckle and say we have simple chants and cheers but being funny and taunting the other teams isn't our goal. We are trying to be so loud that the other team can't hear anything. When it gets loud you literally have to yell for the person next to you to be able to hear you. When the home team has the ball (is on offense) the crowd goes quiet so they can call their plays.

To help you with that disconnect, let me try to explain the football culture, for that matter the sports culture of the United States. As you may well know the United States is very patriotic which comes from its history of how it came to be, but that patriotism goes into our sports as well. We might have the American patriotism for our country, but every sports team whether it be football, baseball, basketball, or even NASCAR, and nowadays even soccer have fans that are very patriotic towards that specific team and/or sport. Now with football it all starts as young as little tykes playing during their grade school years at public after school teams. That gives them the taste whether they want to continue to play football as they grow up or not. After grade school or what we also call elementary school comes junior high which has school teams, where the enthusiasm begins for the players. Then comes high school where each high school has a team, and the enthusiasm goes beyond the players but also to the public of that specific city where that high school is located. The attendance is pretty stepped up at this level at least for that particular high school city district. Now as the players graduate from that high school athletic scouts from the universities go and check out the high school players, and according to their ability and player stats they could earn a scholarship to a university / college, and play for that university. Now as you can see by the videos that you have been watching, the fandom goes way beyond a specific area because students may be coming to that university from the other side of the United States therefore their families and friends might root for that college because of that, but there are also other reasons why people will root for a specific college not in their area. Maybe because they are alumni, or as simple as they just like that particular college football stats or team. Now with college football the enthusiasm as I've been telling you ramps up even more. When the players are close to graduating, or for some have highly sought after skills, the professional teams have recruiters from each professional team that come to scout and watch their games with special seating or even sky boxes high up at the top of the stands to watch the players, and according to their stats they will be recruited to the professional NFL teams. Now with the NFL the enthusiasm gets even stronger throughout our country, and like I said people can be pretty patriotic for specific teams let alone our own country. I hope this helps understand our football, but also our sports culture in general in the United States. The same thing happens in all other sports that we enjoy.
