is this all about that guy from down under who creates controversy and click bait videos to get views? He also said Ritchie Porte was slower on his Emonda because the disc brakes made it heavier, (true sort of) but both versions would have been the same weight to meet the UCI weight limit, meaning no weight difference between that two for a UCI race. 🤦🏻‍♂️

You got really close, Phil. Great job! One of the things I sometimes forget is that the Pro's have the advantage of racing on a closed course. And in De Ghent's case, he was in a group the whole time. You no longer have that luxury and yet you still manage KOMS! Or at the very least; you hold your own against guys still in the game :)

@@znumoxlae-7826 Durianrapist is an infamous liar and hate+dramamonger. This "watts evidence" is all bullshit, and DR knows it, but doesn't care. DR needs to stroke his ego and get some drama views and points with his very very very stupid group of supporters. BikeRadar excerpt from over a year and half ago : =============================================================== Enormous power output Gaimon's engine is remarkable. At 150 lbs / 68kg, he can put out 480 watts for 10 minutes. He can hold over 400 watts for an hour. "My power profile looks like I should win the Tour," Gaimon said. "My 5- to 60-minute power is world class and better than it ever was when I was racing. I train at about half the volume, and I go hard on uphills only. I have no endurance. I am making myself more specialized. I can do maybe 5w more. I think if you put me in a WorldTour uphill time trial I would do better, but would do worse in an actual race. It has been interesting." Gaimon's long term coach Frank Overton of FasCat Coaching verified Gaimon's improvement for these shorter efforts. "Most of our training concentrates on maximal steady state full gas efforts 10-30 minutes in length, plus sweet spot training for the longer climbs," Overton said. "We'll do bottom-to-top repeats of a shorter climb in order to train for longer climbs. For example, we'll go for a 10-minute KOM, then repeat two more times, to train for a 30-minute KOM." ================================================================= - BikeRadarJune 23, 2017 "Ex-pro targets Strava KOMs with funky bike and world-class power" www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/article/phil-gaimons-strava-kom-bike-50210/ DR has always been lying and selling a con - the 'con' that he is someone to look up to and believe for the "best" advice. If you were conned and moved on, good for you. If you were conned and are afraid to leave, time will fix that. If you were conned and 'love DR til the end', you are one of the dumbest people in the history of mankind, gg.

Awesome vid Phil! I'm from Adelaide and we are truly blessed to have so many beautiful climbs like this right on our doorstep. Reason there are so few cars is that there is a kind of unwritten rule of Norton.... bikes get New Norton Summit rd and the cars take Oldl Norton Summit Rd.. they both end up in the same place! In reality this happened as the cars get sick of being stuck behind the bikes on the new rd but hey as a cyclist who's complaining!

Incredible pace. There are no cars because this road (New Norton Summit Rd) has more corners than a parallel straighter road (Old Norton Summit Rd) that goes to the same pub at the top, and all the cars take Old Norton Summit Rd. It is the most famous climb in Adelaide because it was one of the main training routes from the city to Lobethal in the late 80s, where all the pros trained back then (track cyclist, and road squad, and the semi-pro "Tower Hotel group" through the early 1990s). It seriously doesn't feel "flat" as you say when I ride it - at 5% I'm in climbing mode, but with your power it looked like a flat time trial - it was ridiculous and astonishing to watch.

Phil, someone may have mentioned this already, the trees by the side of the Norton Summit climb are Eucalyptus... Koala's love to hang out and chomp on the leaves. Incidentally, you will see a ton of Eucalyptus trees in SoCal. I did a gravel ride out of Temecula a few weeks ago and was blown away by the number of imported Eucalyptus trees I spotted along the route. Massive kudos too for your effort. I cut my cycling teeth on Norton Summit way back in 1991 on gearing I would never ride today, ha! Hopefully, you can return to try your hand at some other climbs in Adelaide during another visit. Corkscrew is one (Pro Tour has been up it) and Coachman Road... both are short but steep little buggers!

How much drafting assistance is provided by camera bikes, commissaire bikes, team cars etc. during a World Tour race? I'll wager that it's a significant enough amount which in turn enables many of the KOM's taken by pros in the breakaway. So unless you can simulate all that, it's bound to be hard to beat those times. In light of that, considering that Phil has beaten such KOM's is proof positive that he's a beast!

Hey Phil how do you deal with cramps (or prevent them)? I've noticed that occasionally when I do a really hard effort I will be prone to cramps (mainly hamstring) for several hours afterward, especially in the winter when I'm not riding as many miles (and also not drinking as much while on rides). Would love to hear your thoughts on that.

Include a 10-15 warm down (no effort just spin the legs and shake them out a bit ie relax the muscles and wiggle your knees in and out) at the end of the ride. Drink more (electrolyte mix), add some stretching and massaging of your hamstrings post ride. You can stretch mid ride without stopping too, stand out of the saddle straighten one leg and push your heel down as far as you can and hold for a few seconds then do the other leg and repeat. If you do that here and there when out it should help a fair bit. I do plenty of century plus length rides in shitty and cold weather and these things definitely help me.

@@worstretirementever First of all you'd never say that to my face, second of all I was being complimentary. Everyone with half a brain who did 5 seconds of research knows those allegations are false...hence why he's not in jail. Your blatant gear use has nothing to do with him. You may be able to fool noobs on youtube but any serious trainer like myself know the truth.

Great stuff "buddy". Ok, I don't qualify to call you that, but just finished "$10 A Day..." and "Draft Animals". "$10" was good, "Animals" was much better! Need to find the 3rd one. Sort of laughable that you say you're not that fast. Even those in the back of the groupetto are amazing to us weekend warriors.

Why are there so many naysayers? Phil was a pro for years, and the ability for him to put down a sub 15 minute effort with higher power than during the ultimate climb in a stage race is easy to understand: as (a) he only focuses on one effort and not the entirety of a stage, and (b) his training can be done so for specificity, i.e. training for climbs. It does not take rocket science to ascertain that simple fact. His capillary development and training know-how are still there and thus he is uniquely apt to lay down these efforts and produce epic videos for our entertainment

I like the beginning of your videos when you say you raced right through some of the most beautiful places on Earth. Something most don't realize when they think of becoming a Professional Cyclist. You are not going to get to enjoy the pleasures of the World as a racer. I never had the desire to be a professional.

Dear Phil, it's quite clear to me that you are showing the outstanding capabilities of genetically gifted and hard working *clean* athlete. As someone who follows cycling for many years I, unfortunately, can tell when extremely gifted athletes are crossing the human capabilities with outrages performances during brutal races (especially 1990-2013). Your achievements are far beyond of us ordinary people but quite modest compared with the top juiced gladiators of cycling.

Hey Phil, I would love to see you come to Melbourne and try our very similar 1 in 20 climb. The biggest difference is that here there is a plethora of cafes with cookies, coffees and cake once you get to the top. But hey that’s Melbourne. Feel free to check out my recent 300w effort to see the climb...and lots of other climbs in our Dandenong Ranges....Sweet....I’ll let the cafes know you are coming, cheers.
