Australian steam locomotives 3526 & 3642 - Lithgow to Bathurst - June 2023

Scenes recorded on Friday June 9th, 2023, of steam locomotives 3526 & 3642 with diesel 4201 at the rear hauling a tour from Lithgow to Bathurst.

I was lucky to be on board as a carriage attendant. The locos performed so well together. We stopped at Tarana to mark the reopening of the station buildings. Then over 300 excited Primary students joined us for a trip to Bathurst. A great weekend too !!

This brings back great memories of living in Lithgow for a mere 2 and 1/2 years (around 7-8 years ago), and chasing SSR whenever I could! I never got to see steam west of Lithgow, except 3642 (and 42220) at Tarana. 😍😍😍😍😍😍

Why is the diesel engine going along for the ride?

2 reasons, the first is that back in 1990 there was a major accident due to a steam engine not being able to climb Cowan bank in NSW (Australia) because a passenger had applied a hand brake in a carriage to make the steam engine work harder but it slipped to a stand and an interurban ran into the rear killing 6 people due to signal irregularities (long story) the second is that as there's no longer loco depots in NSW that have spare locos to "rescue" a steam excursion if it gets into trouble.
