The aliens had implanted their consciences into humans, and are trying to settle on earth. And for the fifth wave to work they need to indoctrinate a lot of people, and the easiest type of people to indoctrinate are children.

One EMP blast won't take out things permanently, batteries are not affected unless they were connected and used to power something at the time as their energy is stored a chemical when not in use. Same for generators or cars that are not running at the time, even the ones that are would only need change of spark plugs and battery to get going again. Planes won't immediately stall and fall out of the sky, they'll keep gliding for minutes more and even with no electronics or power the plane still has some back up controls that allows it to be steered via hydraulics for the pilots to find best place to crash land.

It actually wasn't that bad a movie. Problem was, kids wanted to see The Hunger Games rehashed over and over and so films like this based on popular YA books like this never really stod a chance. It was the same with Mortal Engines a few years later, though that was watered down to be sometimes unrecognisable, and Golden Compass-they were too different.

EMP doesn't disable hydraulic systems. The brakes on cars would still function; you would know this if you... literally ever drove a car and knew the brakes work when it's off. It also doesn't erase aerodynamics, so airplanes would continue to glide, not fall out of the sky right away. But God forbid reality get in the way of drama for lazy writing. Probably also why the alien's path is a perfect straight line on a map aligned to latitude lines, instead of an actual curved orbit. And while I really enjoyed that effects shot of the tsunami wiping out Tower Bridge, the idea of a wave of that size going 40 miles inland from the North Sea, which is basically a mudflat, is pretty hilarious. Like splashing in a puddle and hitting the second-story windows of a house a half mile down the road. Modern media is so garbage. No thought put into it at all, just "ooooh, this would look neat!"
