To reach #1 in the world is amazing enough but to stay there, especially in this day and age should give people an idea of how remarkably brilliant this young woman is. After what happened at the US Open last year I suspect Ashleigh is on the verge of a monster year in 2022.

Such a dream come true for Ash! She managed the pressure so well and fought hard in the second set even when everything was going against her. So happy for her and I’m sure there are many more grand slam titles to come 🏆🎾

I’m thrilled for Ash. She is a great number 1 and representative for the game. I love that she consistently plays the tour events on every surface. I am very happy to see her success on the tour translate to the grand slams. With that said I pray the likes of Osaka, Bibi, Coco, Sabalenka be better and work on improving their consistency throughout the year. Ash is here to stay and though I do enjoy her winning, I ultimately want to see great tennis. I think this can be a very special time IF everyone is up for the task.

Who do you think will have more slams at the end of their career? Barty or Naomi. I feel since Barty can win on all surfaces, she has the edge. But Naomi can still win a lot on hard. Also Barty has more focus and is more consistent. So i give her the edge but its still a long way to go.

At this moment in time, to me the answer is clear. Ash. Because Naomi HAD a great coach in Sascha Baijin, achieved great things, and then took her foot off the gas. She is now on autopilot. Still a great player, don't get me wrong, but not as HUNGRY as she was back in the beginning. I think she made a huge mistake changing her coaching team. Sascha took her to winning grand slams, and just because he demanded hard work, she ditched him (He is now working with Karolina Pliskova). I also think her strength and conditioning isn't as good today as it was before. She seems to have too many distractions off court. I look at Ash's team, and they look bulletproof. Ash has more variety in her game. I just don't see her level dropping any time soon.

the TRUTH is: most tennis player's careers are not linear at all. neither osaka or barty were at the top of the women's game in 2017 and then all the sudden.... here we are. nobody predicted serena winning 18 let alone 23, nobody predicted capriati leaving bc of the stress from the press, nobody predicted henin's comeback, clijster's comeback, the seles stabbing, the kvitova stabbing, ivanovic's retirement, everyone called richard williams crazy, the rise of sharapova, the rise of kerber, the rise of muguruza, the rise (and fall?) of ostapenko, raducanu's win, sloane's win, the under achievement of players like sabalenka and pliskova expected to be multiple slam winners etc etc. it's better to just enjoy the game and see what happens because the facts are nobody, not even the players themselves really knows. the consistency of a 'queen' is no longer after around 2016 and ppl need to cope with that. because during serena's era, ppl complained toward the latter half how she dominated and tennis was 'boring' when really she was just phenomenal. but her level of consistency made fans complacent with the expectation of her wins. now they complain that the field is too wayward and random. but if you've been watching tennis since 1998 like i have, this era of tennis is just as competitive and random as it was in the early 00s when the people that i mentioned weren't household names yet and had a lot to prove. the MEN are the ones who have been consistently bending over for the big 3 for the last 2 decades with very little challenges beyond murray, wawrinka, and del potro. only medvedev and domi have risen to the occasion and even then it was on hardcourts lmao. the women's game is doing just fine.

Like the very best players, Ash has mastered her game, and also her mind. Her tennis IQ and match temperament are second to none. She needed all of that to comeback from 1-5. Not enough is made of her forehand. It is every bit as effective as Steffi Graf's, and arguably has more variety and certainly more spin and power. Ash can also half volley her forehands off the baseline as well as Fed. Yes, her slice backhand disarms the power players, and slows the tempo of the rallies, but it is her forehand with which she strikes and hits winners with devastating effect. The most important thing Ash said here is that she is still learning and evolving her game. The very best athletes in any sport never stop learning, and they learn how to learn.
@funkyguy99
@funkyguy99 2 жыл бұрын
As much as I love Steffi's forehand I think Ash's is more precise and more calculated like you see her crafting her shots to open up angles on the court and she hits it with much more ease. Graf's forehand was more spectacular in that she could hit clean winners out of no where on shots that you thought were impossible to hit. But I would have to give Steffi Graf the slice BH as she was the Queen of slices. Hers was more knifier, consistent and had well disguised drop shots compared to Ash. As much as I think Ash is a worthy champion I think the finals was lacking in quality tennis as it was riddled with too much unforced errors.
@car5473
@car5473 2 жыл бұрын
@@funkyguy99 Yeah, Ash said both players struggled a bit with errors early on. It was Collins' first GS final, she was a bit overwhelmed at times and couldn't get the crowd out of her mind especially when Ash made her second set comeback. What the match lacked in quality was made up with tension! I agree with you on the Steffi-Ash BH/FH comparison. I'm not sure if Ash has modelled her game on Steffi's and put her own stamp on it, but she couldn't have picked a more suitable player if she did.

As much as I love Ash, I think the quality of tennis was lacking. There weren't many long rallies as either Ash or Collins would make an unforced error which nullified the intensity of the match as neither players were sweating too much from a grueling rally. The only thing that made it interesting was seeing Barty claw her way back from a 5-1 deficit.
