I never really thought I had a problem with clothing until I was looking into autism. I've never liked tight or slim fitting clothes, and I remember always having to ask my mum to cut labels out of shirts when I was a kid. When I started buying clothes myself I'd buy things that looked good but then found I couldn't wear them for one reason or another (eg, seams, embroidery or logos that cause the inside to be itchy). These days I mostly buy cheap plain t-shirts that don't have labels in them.

Thanks for raising awareness of the sensory issues many of us Autistic people have regarding clothes. For me, shirt have sometimes been a big issue. I find tucking them in very uncomfortable and because of the material of shirts I need to have another layer underneath. It was a nightmare at school as they were very strict on having shirts tucked in. I also don't like tops which have embroidery go through to the inside of the shirt, as it can rub on my skin a lot.

I honestly wouldn't even know where to start. I've worn the same three outfits for the last two years (I do laundry every day because one of the outfits is to sleep in). I'm dreading the day they're no longer wearable. One of the shirts I wear, I actually have about 10 duplicates of, but the one I like has a factory defect where it's extra long and it's the only one of them I wear now. I have almost daily meltdowns over sensory problems and it combines with my OCD for extra hell. It also makes working nearly impossible because the few things I can stand to wear are not appropriate for work and some days, even my "safe" outfits are horrible. I also hate to NOT have clothes on so there are times when I can do nothing but sit in the shower and cry. Showers make it a little better, but the hot water runs out eventually.

I have issues with clothing that is scratchy or clingy or static as well. The issue I have as a female is underwear! I can't stand the clingyness of most of the underwear that's around now. I like loose fitting 100% cotton ( as does one of my daughter's ) but it is "impossible" to find?! I can't tell you how much money I have wasted on trying to find these. They advertise 100 % cotton but it then says on the label that it's 2 % elastane which I can feel ; O Have tried Bamboo but it feels to "ewwww" you know that feeling right? Why do company's make underwear for kids & not for adults? I mean do they honestly think those kids are not going to grow up & want to wear the same underwear? These companies are missing out on a population that is in existence now! So if you are reading this & have any influence PLEASE pitch something to make these cotton Underwear available for adults as well PLEASE !!!

I was going to say, I could imagine that there is a company out there that should be doing this or is doing it. I can't imagine someone hasn't actually done this yet 😟 But talking about underwear briefly... I know what you mean when you said about the "ewww" feeling. Pretty much I wear boxers all the time and I've got these boxers which are non elastic, fitting... I couldn't tell what they are material wise but I hate them so much. So tight and just the feel of them is disgusting 😫

Loose comfortable clothing is my personal preference. Anything to restrictive makes it impossible to focus on anything else but that. Seams on sox! Geez, why do they have to eat my toes, and yes I have had them chomp bloody bites in my toes and pull a toenail off.(to be fair I have thin nails)... some tags are like cactus. My biggest problem is that I don't know the clothing is a problem until I take it off and find blood or swelling or scratches. I hate old nylon/polyester, it's hot, it burns, scratches and plain irritates my skin. I like super soft semi-tight colorful clothes but I do wear a lot of black too.

I wear a very atypical outfit not just for neurodivergent people but in general. My outfit that I wear everyday is a tank top, miniskirt, mid-calf riding boots, and a green raincoat (slightly longer than my miniskirt, so it ends up functioning as a shiny green dress almost), I keep the raincoat zipped up all the way constantly (and I won't let anybody touch the zipper, not even jokingly, not even my best friend) and I usually wear the hood up. It's a raincoat with no lining made out of heavy PVC or vinyl or rubber, not entirely sure, I just know I love wearing it and I can't stand not having it on. I'll be honest, it's not entirely comfortable, I sweat a lot, especially in summer (although in winter my legs get cold because my raincoat is basically a short dress and my "dress" doesn't cover my legs). But I just love how it feels to wear it and I only feel right wearing it. Is there anyone else with atypical clothing desires like mine? I like rainy days because it's the one time my outfit looks normal and I don't get weird stares (although the weird stares return when I go inside and leave it on as I always do when I'm socially expected to take it off). I don't know why there's a weird social taboo around wearing a raincoat as your outfit and not outerwear when all other kinds of jackets have seen acceptance.

this is probably quite a weird one but i hate wearing shorts because i don't like the feeling of the air blowing up my legs. i also hate things with too many buttons and the inside stitching on socks so i have t wear them a certain way. tight jeans are a massive no-go for me i usually tend to just buy basic clothing such as jeans, t-shirts and jumpers. i'm not too bothered by top quality brands

Clothing for me is complicated. The weave of a fabric can be as important as the fibre content. I tend to prefer natural fibres (cotton, wool, silk, etc) against my skin, but the way those fabrics are processed and woven is very important, as some can be lovely, others a nightmare. The exception is underwear, as I wear only fitted boxer/trunk briefs made from an elastane/microonylon/micropolyester/modal...I like that they have no fly and really small, soft seams. Socks are a cotton-mix or wool only, and seams need to be small, soft, and appropriately placed. Colour-wise, I avoid bright colours and mixes of colours, so my wardrobe is almost entirely black, greys, dark blue, dark brown, dark green, and some dark purples and crimson. Clothes must fit well (I desperately need the income to afford tailored)...not tight, and I hate loose. As with many of us, I do tend to buy the same make and style repeatedly, but I am a bit vani and fashion conscious...or at least what compliments me well. I despise most tags, especially the neckline, and remove them very carefully lest I leave a stiff, sharp stump (somethingthat has been a nightmare in the past). I have been so happy with tags at the bottom of shirts and printed directly on the fabric. Also, you are anything but a 'whale', my friend. That being said, you do look good in black. Thanks for the video...great work.

"why not shop online then?'' I have weird seizes + its kinda hard to check online is a clothing item is really what you want , most stores dont really show every seam, tag , texture there is.

Another thing I'd like to add is that I can't stand wearing pants and most shirts. It's weird, clothing most people find super comfy I can't stand wearing if it can be avoided (shirts, pants, etc) yet a garment that nobody wants to wear (a raincoat) is the only thing I truly enjoy wearing. In winter I actually wear a winter coat over my raincoat when it's really cold. I treat my raincoat like it's a dress and I'm so prissy with it (I'm actually kind of proud of how prissy I am about my raincoat), I don't let anything damage it or stain it. I actually cry when anything gets spilled on it even though it's easy to wipe off. I feel like the only one I know who's taken a piece of outerwear and made it her outfit. I wear my raincoat to bed all the time, too. I mean, why wouldn't I? Of course, I'm wearing it right now as I type this. (I usually don't even think about it, it's just my clothes)

I am a loose clothing type of person. I typically wear some South Pole relaxed fit baggy jeans and either a Fruit of the Loom tagless pocket t-shirt or a loose band shirt. The only kind of hoodies I like are the type that zip in the front. I prefer sneakers without laces (think Lugz slip-ons), clogs or flip-flops. For underwear I typically go with tagless soft cotton boxers. Tight clothing really starts to bother me in less than a half hour into wearing it, so I have to keep it baggy and soft for comfort's sake.

Labels were hell as a kid up to my mid thirties., unbearable but am ok with most now. Hate clothes shopping and profoundly resent having to spend money to cover myself. 4 pairs of same black trousers a year, t-shirts , hoodies and shoes from charity shops, underwear and socks replaces when falling apart( nobody sees them anyway) not too colourful. I don't care to go to work with holes or worn out t-shirts or hoodies because of my job( work with children and young adults with behaviour) they get ripped sometimes. When someone comments on my clothes I tell them I am not on my way to participate in a fashion show. I don't mind any fabric texture on my body but hate to touch with my hands. It's a very unpleasant sensation and very weirdly it affects my tongue too,as if the cloth is in contact with it too. I know it's really weird and I can't explain it.

Edit: carhartt makes some weighty shirts that are really nice. 100% cotton, kinda rought not for everybody with sensory issues. Its workware so they are looser fitting. I like smooth fabrics but stuff like thick wool or tweed makes me itch. Tags on the neck are torture, tags must be removed lol. Yes, seams in socks bother me if I feel the seam. I will put a sock on 3 or 4 times until the seam is not in a place where I feel it.

I have worn pretty much the same thing since I started to buy clothes for myself (about 35 years or so). Black boxers, black t-shirt with "silky" label (one of my stims), black hoodies for the winter (sleeveless ones for the Spring/Autumn), black combats or crag hoppers and walking boots (preferably black but the quality is more important). All loose fitting (yep, 'cos its slimming) and black (as I was a Goth in my late teens/early twenties). The ONLY time I'd misbehave as a kid was clothes shopping. My lovely lady gets me my t-shirts now with occasional gaming/film inspired prints (SEGA, The Mandalorian, Danger Mouse are my favourites at the moment (the Danger Mouse one is actually grey but I didn't care as it had DM on it!)). The combats/crag-hoppers came from going on expedition in Australia when I was 19 and I discovered how damned comfortable they are and well...who can say no to that many pockets?!? ;D I've started to wear a frock coat (yep...black..but I do have a purple one!) whenever I leave the house during the winter as I love the look as I get older :)

If I even try on a piece of clothing that feels itchy or harsh in any way, it feels like the world stops and I go through every stage of grief possible. I am most comfortable in 100% cotton, tag-less slightly on the lose side top or tee shirt. Anything that doesn’t feel natural ( polyester and nylon are my enemy lol) feels like torture

ADHD here, no official Autism dx, but I have ALWAYS hated the feeling of flannel, corduroy, and velvet and I wonder if it’s a potential autism thing. I describe those fabrics as ‘painfully dry’, like as if when I’m touching them they are depleting my body of moisture… I go out of my way to not touch them.

Cat! SOCKS! Omg the sock thing. I have to wear my socks inside out, the seam is SO irritating! Tags are evil as well. Can't be too tight. I can so "picky" when it comes to how clothes feel. granted I have scars from surgeries and that's always affected it too, with pants (lower tummy scar).Certain pants. Not too high waisted. Sweatpants and such are the best.

Of course I hate tags but in general I like heavy fabrics especially denim and wool. I would wear white t-shirts and jeans except I like to tie dye the t-shirts so they all look nice but it just feels like that Plain old white T-shirt. and I like jean jackets because it's like a weighted blanket on me all the time.

Andy, you are NOT a whale! You are you. You don't have to be perfect. Just be who you are - and be great at it. Steven Pressfield (author) said, "Our job in this lifetime is not to shape ourselves into some ideal we [or others!-my addition] imagine we ought to be, but to find out who we already are and become it." You're already doing that with this amazing vlog! Don't body shame yourself, love! You're phenomenal just the way you are. Think of those watching who may also be "portly" (great word btw!). You are encouraging to so many! Encourage them with body image too. You are not a whale. You're fantastic. - from an autism mom who has learned a lot from you.

My 13 year old daughter really struggles with what to wear each day. I can’t figure out what she likes. The only thing I know for sure is she doesn’t wear jeans, only leggings! She just starts screaming “ I don’t like Anything” and throws her clothes around. I’ve tried picking out her clothes with her the night before but by the morning she changes her mind. I usually have to end it picking because she gets anxious and can’t pick. Does anyone with autism know how I can help her?

I’ve always loved blue, the calm color! As an adult, I have to force myself to buy clothes in other colours besides blue. 😜💙 I also like clothing to be form fitting especially around the arms, thighs and hips. NOT the ankles. I can’t ever wear long socks!!! 😝 For masking though, jeans are key! As long as you wear jeans society will accept you as one of their own, right? I gave up jeans a year ago due to chronic pain issues, so now I’m seeking a new style! 😂😂😂

The material you're probably thinking of is polyester. That is a devil material. While there are some good formulations, most wears out, sticks to itself and feels awful. Cotton is the holy grail. There are some synthetics that are nice as well but it can be a crap shoot. Side tags can feel like knives in your side. Things fitting too tight. Fussy clothes you have to think about. Gaps in clothing like top and bottom with bare skin between. Pants with too much give so they drag down as you walk. Socks have to sit right. Shoes need to have a certain tightness. I will seek out the same brands and multiples of the same style. I enjoy a uniform. My (autistic) kids need elastic waist bands and struggle with shoe tying. They will wear sweat pants most days and don't like jeans.
