Our youngest son has an interesting "stim" that looks like he's making motions from the little teapot song. Let us know if you have questions or comments. Thank you!

I do this stim! I often do both shoulders. My counselor said it resembles EMDR (a type of therapy). By taping/ stimulation on both sides of the body, it activates both sides of the brain and helps the brain process information. I’ll also pat my head, hips, chest, and knees. Though we just called it the tapping stim, lol. Love it being called the teapot stim

Okay, that tea pot stim melted my heart a little. Makes me more interested in other stimulations. My boy has the "classic" stems of flapping his hands (sleeves covering hands), clapping and spinning. He does this tippy-toe run/shuffle when he's really excited. Such a joy my son is. Thank you for sharing your family with us. Your videos has helped our family.

I think the best way to answer the question of why someone does a stim is that everybody stims differently. We can have 'typical' stims like hand flapping but no 2 people will stim the same. Personally I clap in-between arm flapping. Very informative video though, thanks for sharing 😊

Very true and valid point. Some people believe stimming only presents in certain ways. And our stimming behavior can change. I have stimms in which I am expereincing anxiety tension in a particualar part of my body and my stimming is focused at relieving that tension. I have stimms that help bring about mental focus. I have other stimms that suddenly appear and I cannot control. The oldest stimm I can remember (over 60 years ago!) was the rubbing of my index finger over the back of my thumb on both hands. I wore blisters on my thumbs and temporarily damaged my thumbnails. My parents had to tape splints on my thumbs to try and stop this behavior. I shifted to pulling the hair on the back of my head or shaking my hand behind my head. I would be hestiant to have people establish certain stimms to watch for as an Autism indicator. Our stimming can be as varied as our Autism. Yes there are stimms that are commonly observed, but interetingly, there are neurotypicals that can display these behaviors for their own reasons. I have an adult friend that has a very strong "rocking habit" and another that shakes his hands heavily when doing sports. So there you go. Just for the record, my current strongest stimm is slapping the side of my face (cheek) uncontrolably when I am engaged in heavy concentration or thought. I still do spider fingers, flappy hands, and arm shakes/raises.
@lizzykate93

@@davef2975 I can relate to this, I have different stims for different reasons and I also rub my fingernails against my other fingers or thumbs when I'm nervous. I've seen neurotypical people do the same stim and I think everyone has a habit like that but it doesn't mean they have autism 😊

Blind people stim too. Blind people rock back and forth too, just like autistic people. The reason why we rock is to get a glimpse around us of what the world is like, because we have no sight. I have Septo Optic Dysplasia, which is a rare disease. SOD caused me to be totally blind, it also caused me to be on the autism spectrum, and it also caused me to have a few other issues.

Hi. I don't usually do the teapot stim. But I do wiggle my fingers and when I hear a song I like, I rock back and forth to the music and I dance too. I love your videos. I think that you're an amazing channel and I have been a female diagnosed with PDD now called an Autism Spectrum Disorder since I was 2 and I got to say. Your videos have helped me a lot. They pretty much helped me understand your Autistic sons and other people on the Spectrum like my transgender daughter and my daughter who loves Mickey and Minnie Mouse. I love learning about Autism and other disabilities. Keep up the good work!

I'm on the spectrum and in my 30s, and the only time I stim like that is when I'm cooking. As I stand over the stove, I tend to stand with my hands rising up and tapping my shoulders. Can't explain it, as my typical stims comprise hand-flapping and twisting my torso back and forth. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who does the teapot stim!

My grandson does that often - he also does the spider fingers and bangs his head on ...anything. He's lessened banging his head and hand flapping (which he did A LOT) but now and then still bangs his head. He's taken up stomping and stomped the iron vent on the floor into bending. A great percentage of autistic people have ADHD. I had suspected it a long time so at his last doctor appointment, he was evaluated and confirmed as ADHD. Little lady has her autism evaluation on the 30th but I already know just like I did with little man; plus she has seizures. Just need the confirmation. There's so much going on. Glad you guys have this channel to connect to others.

Hi, thanks always for your videos and sharing your wonderful family experiences. Have nothing much right now about teapot stimming, but the rocking stimming reminds me of how.. ..(hopefully you're open to listen to comments related to religion; if not then please ignore my comment here) ...muslims also rock while sitting on the floor, when they chant their dzikir (remembrance of The God). Usually muslims try their best to be deeply focused during dzikir, and the rocking helps the people to be more focused, instead of just sitting there straight without moving. I wonder if autism stimming (whatever pattern it is) also actually are there to help our wonderful autistic people to focus. Would be nice also to know why the stimming patterns are different. Also, rock bands also rock during their live shows 😁 People who sit for a long time also tap their feet. I guess it helps the people to stay focused or seated.

I think sometimes I do a similar stim, and basically what happens with me sometimes is I feel this unusual need to touch behind my head, almost like there's a string pulling my finger there. Other times, I just feel like I need to put my hand/finger in a position where it has a direct line to the back of my head, but won't actually put it there. Maybe this is something like what Alistair is doing?

My husband and I got a friend of the family who was good at cutting hair to help us. We took our son to a park and put him on a swing, which he loved. We would swing him for awhile, and then we would stop the swing for a minute and have our friend cut our son's hair. We just kept repeating this until the haircut was completed. That way our son actually had fun during the haircut, and he enjoyed hanging out with his friend. I think he was around 3 years old. After that we started taking him to a Hair Cut tery and introduced him to all the stylists. We told them he was autistic. They were very friendly and made a big fuss over him and gave him candy. After that he was fine.

No, don't do it. But I'm going to guess an occupational therapist specializing in sensory processing could probably tell you. My understanding (I'm not an OT, so perhaps take with a grain of sodium chloride) is that repetitive touching of a body part provides proprioceptive input (proprioception is a feeling of where the body is in space--esp involving joint to joint contact and your kid selected a very essential joint there--shoulder connects arm connects neck, etc). My understanding is that most autistic people (and some not on the spectrum) have differences in sensory processing. For example, I have lesser feeling of proprioception (according to an OT, also my current PT), and can't tell where I am in space if I am in a dark room and if walking with someone else I tend to walk into them. Someone mentioned EMDR input, wouldn't rule that one out either---but think the two may be relate--it may be calming because it stimulates the proprioceptive system. BTW, I'm glad you are looking for possible reasons vs thinking it has no purpose!! You might like to pick up "Raisng a Sensory Smart Child" by Lindsey Biel and Nancy Peske.
