What do you do when they don't cooperate with the instruction on the second or third or fourth time?

Hello, thank you for reaching out. We would recommend prompting the child to respond/do the task if he or she does not respond correctly in the 2nd trial. This is to prevent the child from practicing incorrect behaviors for too long and for us to avoid repeating our instructions too many times, reinforcing the incorrect response. We do also want to be mindful and be reminded to reinforce the child when he or she DOES demonstrate correct responses through reinforcements and praises as that will increase the likelihood of them repeating the correct response again. We hope that this is helpful. If you would like to discuss more specific strategies for your child, please do not hesitate to reach us at enquiries@autismmalaysia.com and our team would love to get in touch with you. Thank you.

I'm currently working on an assignment about autistic children and I find your videos really helpful. They are informative and well-structured. What I enjoyed a lot are the little tests after the introduction of the theories, which allows me to check my understanding of the concepts, because we won't be able to apply the right strategies without understanding the context of them. Thanks again for the well made videos~

Please, what do you do if the child is aggressive about grabbing or attacking? That cannot be ignored.

Hi, thank you for reaching out. We would recommend to look out for precursor behaviors and take note of certain triggers that may lead to the behaviors then prompt the child to communicate at the onset of the behavior before it escalates. We highly encourage to focus on preventing the behavior from happening such as noting down pre-cursor behaviors and removing self away from the child to avoid being grabbed and redirect them to a calming activity. We also encourage teaching the child communication and coping strategies through the use of visuals and social stories. We hope that these have been helpful. Do reach out to us at enquiries@autismmalaysia.com should you have further questions or discuss further strategies that are specific to the child's behavior with one of our team. Thank you.

How do you ignore violent screams and shouts that go on for 2-3 hours?
@autismmalaysia

Hello, thank you for reaching out. We would encourage to communicate to your child using visuals and proactively redirect his or her attention to other activities that are not contributing to the function of the behavior. Calming activities such as attention tasks (eg: putting ice cream sticks in a bottle) can also be used to help with self-regulation. We hope that you have found this helpful. Should you require further and more specific support, do reach us at enquiries@autismmalaysia and our team would love to get in touch with you for an initial appointment. Thank you!
