Auto Headlamps "Fixed" 1978 Lincoln Town Car * see correction in description

#lincolncontinental#78stinkinlincoln#lincoln In this video I was able to repair my auto headlamps by replacing the auto headlamp amplifier. * The inline 4amp fuse pictured in the video hidden behind the fuse box is part of the high beam auto dimmer system and "NOT" responsible for turning on the auto headlamps. The Auto headlamps fuse is located in the fuse box located on the driver side to the left of the brake pedal. Fuse is located top, right, and second one down. Diagram labeled it as fuse 15 and it is 7.5 amp fuse. Hope this helps take care and please like, share, subscribe, and tap the notification bell!!!

Beautiful car!! I have a 78 Diamond jubilee blue and it has auto dem from high to low beam when driving and I can’t get it off high beam setting even after removing the in line fuse.

Thanks for watching appreciate it. These cars you can source most parts through Rock Auto cheap too. One of the easiest to restore mechanically. However be sure to check for rust and body damage 4-10000 to have properly painted depending on where you live.

The aftermarket alarm was not the problem (didn't need the relay), if you would of checked the wiring diagrams you would see that the brown wire is an energized relay feed for the exterior lamps (excluding headlamps), so it doesn't back feed to the module electronics. The headlamp switch is also connected to that brown wire to power the exterior lamps manually. Usually the unit fails because of a bad relay or dirty relay contacts.

Thanks for your feedback btw and taking the time to reply 🙂 I really appreciate it I am learning everyday. But how could it not back feed. Ok hear me out. Ignition is off (therefore auto headlamp module is off) there is now a wire from an aftermarket alarm parking lamp circuit T-tapped to the brown wire coming immediately out of the module. When I arm the alarm the parking lamp wire from the "alarm" sends a 12 volt signal to the brown wire to fire up the parking lamps briefly to let you know the alarm is armed or disarmed. How would that current not back feed into the auto lamp module considering the current is going to travel both directions in the brown wire. It truly may be harness I just installed the relay as a precaution. Now while I've got you. Where do you suggest putting a delay relay to headlamps. They immediately come in inside the garage while starting the car which is hard on LED and HID headlamps. I have a digital relay I am going to put a 30 second delay to allow time to start the car and get the alternator spinning. Please help lol

Simply put the brown wire is connected to the normally open relay contact, when the relay is energized, the normally open contact receives 12v through the headlight switch circuit breaker from the battery. The Autolamp Module only energizes the relay coil, which is separate from the 12v supplied to the brown wire for the exterior lights. So there is no way the alarm wire tap can back feed to the module electronics and damage it. As for needing to delay the Autolamp System, the module is powered through the run circuit of the ignition switch, on my Continental Mark V it is a dark blue wire with white hash marks, by delaying the power on this wire it would keep the system from activating until receiving 12v. Also your Autolamp System should have a fuse in the fuse block, not the in-line fuse you show in your video.

It looks like your right about the fuse it's number 15 top right 2nd one down. There is an inline connector with a 4 amp fuse in the diagram for the auto headlamp dimmer but that is a different system. Idk I got lucky throwing a module at it period. Anyways thanks take care!!

I had to take a unibit and enlarge the hole in the middle of the headlamp housing. Just wallowed out the center hole until the aftermarket headlamp would fit

As always, great video! Had a question on the parts. The shop manual suggests the photocell and amplifier are a matching set. Did you replace both?

That's correct I did not though. Fortunately the calibration between the 2 was still within the thresholds. I would think it would always work but the twilight setting may be skewed.

It's not a relay per se it's a solenoid that actuates under the dash just above the e brake pretty good size black box. I would listen for a bad vacuum leak in dash near headlamp switch. If your on Facebook join the 75-79 Lincoln Continental group they have a lot of people that can help

I sourced mine on ebay. Also lincoln land out of clearwater would have it as well. If you do purchase try to get it with it's original photosensor as well if you can.

I wanna delete this system on my 77' town coupe. Its a flaky system. In 30 years, ive changed (3) $280 headlight switches and the problem is this system doesnt always function correctly. Plus that headlight switch will sometimes get VERY hot and the headlamps wont work..
