*PLEASE READ THIS VIDEO DESCRIPTION FOR HELPFUL INFORMATION*
In this video, we show you how to replace the Automatic Transmission Shifter Bushings and Transfer Case Shifter Seat on a 3rd Generation Toyota 4runner. This video would also work for 1st Gen Tacomas. As these rigs age, the plastic shifter bushings for the auto trans can degrade and wear out causing a loose shifter. Also, the transfer case shifter seat can degrade over time and become very brittle and fall apart. This is a fairly easy job that any DIYer can do.
**One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that I believe that shifter seat degradation can cause a leak from the top of the transfer case. When the seat breaks apart, it doesn't seal around the ball of the shifter anymore and gear oil can splash up and make its way out the shifter hole. My transfer case on my 98 had a gear oil leak and I determined it was coming from the very top because I could feel gear oil around the shifter boot. So, if it was wet around the shifter boot, it had to be coming out the shifter hole. After I replaced the shifter seat, the leak stopped.
**I misspoke in the video in regards to the differences in the transfer case shifters for the different models. For years 1996 - 2000, the SR5 and Base models will have the J-shifter style transfer case shifter and the Limited models with have the Push Button style transfer case shifter. For years 2001 & 2002, all the models have the same multimode transfer case and will have the Push Button style transfer case shifter.

Here's a helpful contribution from Michael Spangenberg: Now, for some bonus suggestions... the front-back play in the shifter can be cleared up very easily, I found. There is a rubber grommet with a brass bushing insert that connects the shifter linkage to the ACTUAL transmission shifter lever under the truck. The grommet is rubber, and it was hard, brittle, and had shrunk. If you replace that, like magic the front-back play disappeared. Also, "while yer in there..." change out the PRND2L light bulb. It cost about $2 and it will keep you from tearing apart your console later. Trans Shifter Linkage Grommet: 90480-17177 Trans Shifter Linkage Bushing: 90389-08005 Light Bulb: 90981-11018

The left to right slop in the shifter can lead to locking the key in the ignition at the ACC position. With the shifter pushed to the left the pin does not catch the white hook that is supposed to slide up when putting into park. The computer thinks the 4runner is not in park and the key will get locked in the ACC position in the ignition switch. This bushing replacement was key for my 3rd gen to be operational. @@TimmyTheToolman Off topic but a possible huge headache, 2007 Rav4 with 2GR-FE engine, V6, spark plugs for cylinder #6 & #4 came out-lost boot at end of ignition coil, BUT cylinder #2 spark plug is not coming out, acting as if the threads are crossed. Loosening is getting very hard. I am going back and forth with a quarter turn tighten and then a little more loosen to baby the thing out of there. Any suggestions so I do not turn this into a head job? Would an impact hammer drill work better then ratchet by hand?

@@stevebowling6884 Don't use an impact. Just work it out slowly with the ratchet and hope for the best. If the threads get really messed up, you could drill it out and put a helicoil insert in to fix the head. There is also a thread restorer you can run through the threads if the threads are in decent shape but just a little rough.

Oh man yes! I replaced those 4 blue bushings a couple of months ago and it's so nice & so worth it. I added a couple thin nylon washers into the metal linkage as well to snug things up a bit. It feels so much better you just want to sit in your ride and shift it through the gears all day long. So satisfying. Thank you Timmy for the great video. Wish I would have seen it before I did mine. Didn't know about the transfer case shifter part ..just might go back in and do that one too now.

Hey Tim, you are a ROCK STAR at explaining the details. Marlin Crawler is the best and that blue busing part for the transfer case is a "must" replace item. I've got a 1996 SR-5 4 WD and the old one was basically black/blue mush. Yes...Marlin Crawler recommends tossing the black rubber gasket at the bottom of the transfer case shifter bushing. Also, little tip for folks -- put the breather tube on the top plate and then align and bolt on top of the transfer case. Another note -- 1996 "J-shifter" does not have that white plastic bushing on the end of the transfer case shiter. Thanks for your vid's...the best!

This video works for all 3rd Gen 4runners, 1996-2002. The only variation with this job is the difference in transfer case shifters, SR5 J-shifters, and Limited shifters with the push button 4wd. There's a difference with the oil deflector plate that is noted in the video description.

Did this repair today on my daughters 01'. Very simple. I would have been able to replace the 2 bushings without taking off the transmission linkage. However, the two bushings on lower part of the linkage also needed to be replaced. Still a very easy fix. Thanks for the video.

I did it on my 2WD 4runner couple months ago, and I did it today for my 4WD 4runner. For the 4WD, you really don't need to disconnect the lever. You simply need to open the plastic black cover, unscrew a small white plastic piece, and voila - you can take off the shaft and install the bushings. In and out in 20 min.

Thanks Timmy for another great video! I just did this on my '02 Tacoma after the dealer quoted me $310. For others doing this: don't make my mistake and forget that the shifter button doesn't work without the key ON and the brake peddle pressed. I spend way too much time trying to figure out why it wouldn't shift out of park . The Vessel screw drivers linked in the description do seem like the real deal and fit these screws better than a Phillips.

My 99 Limited has a J shifter transfer case with the multimode and the bushing was beyond gone; it had actually fused to the shifter assembly. Glad I ordered the Marlin Crawler replacement. There is 2 different transfer cases that have different shift options for the multi matic push button electronic shifters 1 is L4,N,H as well as the L4L,N,H2,h4,H4L and the j shifter so there 3 transfer cases totall hope it helps others I have both multimatic push button models and a j shifter model

A bit of silicone spray on the boot grommets would allow them to go in easier, unless there's some reason not to. If at all possible, Remove or replace e-clips, spring detents, etc with the part inside a box. If the part flies, chances are good it will be captured by the enclosure.

I thought the same thing. You can leave it in place, but honestly it’s way easier to just take it off, because you have to grind out the old bushings and you will want to just go ahead and replace the other bushings as well.

There is not transfer case linkage. The shifter connects directly into the transfer case. Are you talking about the boot that is seen around the shifter in the cab?

@@TimmyTheToolman you’re right, not the transfer case. I guess it would be the more forward boot for the linkage on the underside of the plate. The one that you had to slide down what appears to be a flat, bar looking connector. I assume it’s what connects to the shifter linkage on the underside of the vehicle.

@@noahjohnson2150 I think your best bet is just visiting your local Toyota dealer parts department. You will pay a little more than online pricing, but you'll at least get the part you need without going through the pains of trying to figure out the part number via exhaustive online searching.

Just did this today. Well the four shifter bushing. Easy job except some asshat tried to do this before. They lost two of the eight bolts that bolt the shifter assembly to the body and took out and left out the three screws to hold the white sensor to the shifter. Not sure if they gave up because the bushings were non existent... some peoples children😡

While in drive it is so loose that you can move the lever enough to show the selector is in neutral. You guys have any ideas what is worn out before I start taking the shifter assembly out? I would take a look at the linkage from the shifter to the transmission under the rig on the driver side. The shifter bushings being worn out could also cause front to back play as well.

@@h20mxracer222 Don't know the part numbers for the linkage. It's mostly metal parts that can't create play unless one of the fasteners are loose. It might be just a nut you need to tighten. The metal shifter part connects to the metal trans linkage with a stud and nut. The transmission linkage has an oblong hole for adjustment purposes. That nut might be loose causing the front to back play. When you get under the rig, you'll see that connection.

my shifter is super loose up and down (I can move shifter from Park to Reverse). so I guess I need to loosen the shifter linkage bolt and adjust it. i don't know how it got loose so much.

Check the linkage under the rig on the driver side of the transmission. If that isn't it, you'll need to remove the shifter to examine it.

Timmy, luckily my shifter isn’t very loose so i don’t have to tackle this job. However, along the lines of the shifter, I was wondering if it’s possible to replace the plastic plate on the shifter as mine looks super raggedy for some reason. I have the whole center area taken apart right now and I can’t figure out how to get this black piece over the shifters leather handle. It’s sold online so I’m thinking there might be a way to replace it but I can’t figure it out myself and nobody has posted about this issue online. Let me know if you think you can help. I appreciate it!

Hey Blake, we've never tried to replace that piece so we don't know how to get it off. You might be forced to find a used shifter assembly at a wrecking yard if you want to replace that piece.

Hi Tim, I followed this video, replaced the 4 bushings and swapped to a marlin crawler shifter seat. Its the coveted 2000 limited 4wd with J shifter, e locker, rear diff.. After completing the work the truck is stuck in 4wd. I must've knocked something when removing the transfer case shifter. I've taken it apart and re seated everything several times but now my t-case shifter isn't interfacing with the t-case. The lights in the instrument cluster say it is in 4wd and when I drive it it sure feels like it. Pressing the 4wd button on the side of the Tcase shifter doesn't change anything. Any ideas? You must not have gotten the end of the shifter rod in the wrong slot in the transfer case. The J-shifter is different than the one shown in this video. Hey Timmy did you have any leaks since you didn’t reuse the gasket under the marlin crawler shift seat? I have a 2000 limited with the j-shift push button tcase. I took everything out and just put the marlin crawler shift seat in without the gasket underneath. I recently found it leaking from the top of the tcase by the shift handle and didn’t realize there used to be a gasket there. But I feel if I were to try and put the oem gasket I would not be able to get the snap ring on the shifter because it was really tight without it just like in this vid. Thanks for the help!

You shouldn't need to install that rubber gasket under the marlin crawler shifter seat and you're right that there's no way you could get that snap ring in place. What really makes the seal is the shifter ball with the seat. When the OEM shifter seat deteriorates, that's when the gear oil can get past the shifter ball. It happened on my 98. Did you replace the shifter plate gasket? Did you make sure you reconnected the breather tube?

I got a transmission trouble on pavement road after driving on High rocky Mountain as in off road, non pavement with 2way drive mode last weekend. Hereafter It was impossible to drive on the pavement road because of a transmission(?) stuck, slipping or idling with a big noisy. So I shifted 4runner drive mode from 2 way drive. Then it turns normal for 4runner driving without a noisy. Further I will not use 2way drive any more. What is the mechanical problem sir?

I don't understand your question. There's not much difference with the removal of the transfer case shifters. One is the push button type that was available for the Limited models, and the other is the J shifter that was available on the SR5 and base models. There is a difference with the oil deflector and I cover that in the video. I don't understand what you mean by "pucs".

Your best bet is to get access to a Toyota Factory Service Manual so you can look at the parts schematic. I don't have a 2nd Gen manual at my disposal. Maybe someone on a Toyota forum or Toyota Facebook page could provide you photos on the FSM pages you need.

The transmission has positive stop at each gear. I know this because I've run through the gears on a transmission out of the vehicle. I don't know if the shifter does as well. Maybe your shifter is slightly out of alignment with the transmission. There's a nut that affixes the shifter linkage to the transmission linkage on the driver side of the transmission. Loosen the nut while the vehicle is in park and let the linkage shift and settle to it's neutral place. Now tighten the nut and see if there's any difference in the shifter.

It sounds like he just replaced the two bushings right near the shifter assembly. So yeah, you would replace the two bushings further away in the shifter linkage. Replacing the transfer case shifter seat is optional, but it would be smart to do it while you're in there. I guarantee that shifter seat is in bad shape. It comes out in pieces on every rig I've replaced it on.

Hey Tim. I know this video has been out there for a while, but no less relevant. I just wrapped up this project - much needed after 350,000 miles. I probably should have done it 100,000 miles ago, to be honest. My shifter was so sloppy that I'd routinely miss D, and slip it into 2 accidentally. All four of my bushings were nonexistent. Also, my ignition interlock was all messed up, due to a lack of lubrication and the presence of grime in the shifter button mechanism do-hicky. Every time I parked and tried to get the key out, I'd have to spend a minute or two messing with the button to get it to release the key. Cleaning that up and regreasing it fixed that nicely. Now, for some bonus suggestions... the front-back play in the shifter can be cleared up very easily, I found. There is a rubber grommet with a brass bushing insert that connects the shifter linkage to the ACTUAL transmission shifter lever under the truck. The grommet is rubber, and it was hard, brittle, and had shrunk. If you replace that, like magic the front-back play disappeared. Also, "while yer in there..." change out the PRND2L light bulb. It cost about $2 and it will keep you from tearing apart your console later. Trans Shifter Linkage Grommet: 90480-17177 Trans Shifter Linkage Bushing: 90389-08005 Light Bulb: 90981-11018 Happy Wrenching!

Well I've never really pulled up and down on the shifter but I suppose the worn bushing could also cause the up and down movement. There is a small screw on the shifter handle and maybe that came out causing the movement. If you look at how the shifter attaches to the shifter base, the linkage to the transmission couldn't cause that play. It's either the bushings or something else failed on your shifter that you'll need to investigate by pulling it out.

The auto shifter doesn't use a shifter seat. A manual transmission shifter uses one, and a transfer case shifter uses one as well. All you require for the auto transmission shifter is replacement bushings.

Once again killed it! Had issues with my ignition switch on 00’ sr5. Couldn’t shut the the key in the off position. Changes the ignition switch and had so much play in the shifter it had to have some influence on the truck thinking it was in park. Both top and one bottom bushing was shot and had been letting it go for years. Do this fix if your shifter is wobbly and save yourself a future headache of going down a rabbit hole. Thanks Tim. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used your vids and got a project done with confidence. I’ve owned myT4R since 02’ and shes got 265k and I’d be lost without her. Keep them coming.

Just a tip for the transfer case shifter boot. Take a really small or thin flat tip screwdriver, dip it in liquid soap such as dawn or ivory and slip it between the boot and shifter rod, do a 360 around the shift rod. Remove the screwdriver the boot is now lubed and slides right off.

Hi Tim, I have a Willhi wh7016c temperature gauge to monitor the automatic transmission temperature. Do you have a suggestion for sneaking a wire from the interior console to the tranny cooling line output? The wire is only about three feet long so figure I need to go through one of the two ports near the shift port. I don't really feel like unbolting everything but I see it may be needed. I like the Willhi temp reader.. I can program a temp alarm and also watch normal temperature patterns. Soon to be towing a boat with trailer, 2900 lbs.

@@TimmyTheToolman Already did snag one from a junk yard. Unfortunately, all of those vehicles have some type of body damage that allows the interior to be destroyed by the elements. Or in most cases, the shifter is the first thing to go. I'm thinking about getting all of the measurements from the plastic inlay to create a custom vinyl sticker or plastic print that will fit inside. Heck, maybe even sell them if there is any interest.

I think it's most likely your rear driveshaft slip yoke binding on the main driveshaft. It's a common issue with these rigs. The zerk fitting that provides grease to the splines does a very poor job at lubricating it. So, over time, the splines get excessive wear and then start binding. With the flex of the suspension and drivetrain, the slip yoke slides in and out on the main driveshaft. When you're coming to a stop, the suspension compresses a bit and the drivetrain moves forward on it's mounts. As you're coming to a stop, the suspension uncompresses and the drivetrain starts to settle back into it's neutral position. When it settles, the slip yoke will settle back as well. But, if the splines are worn and sticky, it doesn't slide back smoothly. The splines come unbound and you feel that thump from the rear of your vehicle almost like somebody tapped you from behind and ran into your bumper. You can try removing the slip yoke and manually greasing the splines like I show in the very first video we made for your channel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXy7ZoibepeHrtU

If you're having shifting issues after a failure like you had, it's most likely permanent damage happened to the transmission due to running low on fluid. Hate to say it but your probably going to need a new transmission.

@@TimmyTheToolman okay so a question does speed sensor/abs sensor cause any issues with the trans?. Causing it not to engage or recognize gear. I had the abs light turn on when that happened but previously when the line broke car smoked up and was almost drained of atf no lights on dash or anything wrong. This time i had the abs light come on and i didnt drive it because of the no reverse not because of the leak. It drives great but i have another assumption it could be a sensor. Im atleast 65 70 percent sure of it after driving and looking over everything

@@curhvy An ABS sensor issue will not cause a shifting problem with the transmission.

I've been having issues getting the key to release after shifting into park, think this will help with fixing the problem?

You may need to adjust the linkage to fix that, I tried tightening that up to take out the front/back play but it threw off the positioning of the selector and trans to the point where It would say it's in Park on the selector, but the trans isn't fully seated in the park position, thus not letting you fully turn the truck off and pull your key out. It would behave like when you turn the truck off on accident before putting it in park I would still do this job though if you have any side to side play, as it'll take out 100% of it and at least firm up the shifter

Like Captain Magma1 said, your linkage might be off. Simply loosen the 12mm nut when the rig is in park and see if the linkage finds a new neutral point. I just helped a guy out that had a similar problem. His trans would drop into 2nd gear without him doing anything. I checked it out and it definitely wasn't shifting right. When I loosened the nut, the shifter arm immediately slid forward around a 1/2". I tightened the nut in the new position and his shifting problem was fixed. Two different mechanics told him it was shifter bushings.

Hi Timmy, I got a situation here. One year ago I've removed my 1995 4runner A340H atm transmission, had a heart attack and now decided to reinstall, but under the car towards back there's a kind of metal arch that supports the 4x4 lever bar, but, I don't remember the right position , it's kind of intuitive, but I'm afraid to make something wrong. Can you help me?

I don't have much experience working on 2nd Gen 4runners. My only experience is doing the 3.0 to 3.4 swap. I don't know the metal arch you're talking about.
