I had a 1989 V6 automatic for a short time. It had a digital dash. It was given to me to get it out of a ladies back yard. It had sat for a long time. Transmission was slipping 2nd to 3rd. I let it go to a title pawn place when I found out that the title had been pawned. They wanted almost 2 grand and I wasn't going to pay that and fix the transmission.

A couple reasons: he can then drive anything; it will make him a better driver; its likely his friends won't know how so he'd never be pressured to lend his car to his friends; better on gas; cheaper to maintain and one less thing to go wrong.

"You should probably have experience blahblahblah" I learned in a Datsun 210, 5-speed. I taught my sister in an 86 plymouth turismo, another 5-speed. My best friend learned in a Farmont with a 4-speed (ALSO a fox body, and a 302, iirc). Learning a stick gets people more in tune with the health of the car. No traction control teaches you how to control a vehicle without relying on the neat little helpers that can stop working.

I have driven 5 different HHR and put over 1.2 million miles on them. The HHR is far easier to work on. The PT has to have the motor removed to replace the water pump, and that water pump goes bad way too fast. Because of the number of cars that use the same engine and transmission in the HHR, parts are easy to find.

U get 40mpg and it’s a 12 gal tank! So cheap to fill and gets 400-450 miles per tank! And very handy u can fold back seats down and load so many things like mini van! And the butt part of rear seat folds upwards so u can hold things parallel And the 1.5l non turbo doesn’t have the oil consumption that the other engines have and turbos have! I had a Subaru GL wagon once that I had to drive through a dump truck full of paper plant waste spilled out. It didn't smell at all and I didn't think to wash it right away. It started making the inside of the car smell horrific when the temp out got to the mid 90's or higher. No washing the under side of the car would cure it, only the temp outside cooling off did anything. It was in Central WI though, so the temp hasn't that bad very often. The transmission was already going bad and someone bought it for parts.

Randy, when I was Nicks age, I would have taken anything. However, I'm 30 now, and kind of want what I want within reason. No, no one is getting me a 911 or a Gallardo, of course, but I do want exactly what I want now that I'm older. I always got A's and B's in school, I did pretty well for just barely being diagnosed with Aspergers in high school, again, when I was Nicks age. I'd pick the HHR over the PT Cruiser. The HHR I thought was a better built vehicle than the PT Cruiser was. I thought the PT Cruisers were junk in contrast to the HHR. More issues with the PT Cruisers than the HHRs mechanical wise. I don't know if I'm biased towards the HHR or what, But I like them more than the PT Cruiser for sure. We have a 2016 Elantra, a base SE, and we love it. Also check out a 2000-2007 Ford Focus, great cheap cars, and you don't have to worry is something happens to it.

Maybe it could be something you two work on together and then he could drive it if he ended up liking it. Sure, it is kind of a funky looking car, but it is a BMW. If not, I think a Honda Civic or Accord or a Toyota Corolla or Camry would be a good car for him. They are reliable and affordable. I wouldn't go with a Hyundai or Kia for a first car for him though. I know they have gotten better over the years, but when I was in school, those were the cars we made fun of....not to mention the ones that use keys are so easy to steal. The people stealing them are kids his age and younger
