Thanks for this - I had the replacement jalousie for 2 years and finally saw your video with this hack. Have wanted it installed, but wasn’t willing to spend $$$ have my trusted mechanic deal with it. As a female Saab owner for nearly 40 years (I’m on my 5th one, my 2nd beloved 9-5 wagon), I was inspired by your video and just completed the jalousie replacement myself for the minimal cost of the part. It took a tad more than 10 minutes, but easy-peasy and well worth it! Many thanks!!!

Nice vid! I used to snip them like you did, but honestly tearing apart the shifter isn't too hard so thats the only way I do them now. Glad someone did a full explanation of the shortcut!! Also last I looked, those green straps were NLA, but if that's since changed or if you can find one, it's a good time to check & replace that too if it's worn.

Hmmm I'd say not to make the cut, at least in a hot place like Australia, you'll be replacing it again in a few weeks after it's heat cycled - if your going to do the cut make sure you glue it, as it sags and gets bound up in the shifter mechanism.... You then have another broken jalouise strip I can't speak for cooler places but definitely is a temporary fix in Australia. The jalouise covers from rockauto the uro branded ones landed here are ~ $30usd so for me not worth saving 10 minutes to then have to redo it a few weeks later under warranty for a customer...

Yeah not the same as Australian high uv and heat, last summer was 53oC (128F) as I say can't comment to where you live but will say I've done it to 3 cars all failed in less than a month so won't do it again. It only takes a few mins to split and reassemble the shifter any way... Although I manage to put the jalouise cover in the wrong way 1/2 the time lol

One thing. I think all Saabs are in much better condition here in Finland. What do you do to them there in the US? (Edit: I don't want to diss any country but this is just my observation. Is it partly due to climate?) Also - I would need you to check out my Saab9-3 engine and other parts - guess would be too expensive to get you here lol
@okletsskate

People don't take care of things as much after a couple generations here, with all cars as I have seen it. In warmer climates, when these cars sit, the plastics become brittle and break.

I always love that the company that can build one of the safest cars ever made couldn't design a piece of rubber that actually won't disintegrate in a few years. "Jalouise" is French for "blind" (as in window) and replacements come in both LH and RH forms. To get one shipped down here to Australia it's about $100! I DIY'd one using the textured plastic from and old screwdriver case....

By slitting the jalousie in half, you weaken its structural integrity by 50%. If you can live with that, fine. Yes, removing the knob is tricky- but a 21-year-old mechanic at my European-specialty garage had the brains and ability to do it.

Doing this shortcut will cause the jalousie to break prematurely again. Because it's under constant use and cutting it will cause a "weak spot" where eventually it'll start to bend and it basically won't last. Tried it myself and with a friend, would not recommend.
