i like the way you did separate videos for rigging modelling texturing and even lighting instead of a all in one video. thank you helped a lot especially the paints skin weights tool

It doesn't need to be a combined mesh. In the bind options, Geodesic Voxel is good for objects comprised of multiple meshes. However, you can avoid skin weighting simply by selecting each piece separately and binding to a the selected joint. Also, since a treasure chest isn't likely to bend anywhere other than the hinge, each piece only needs one joint of influence.

Something tells me it can be done much easier. Without any rigs and just 1 bone for top. The one on floor is not needed.

izvarzone You can animate just the geometry without any bones if you don't want. In this case the one on the floor is needed because it is a combined object and you need it so that the bottom won't move when you open the lid.

You van absolutely do that, but in this video I wanted to show how to do it using joints amd not just animating the geometry.
