My 2008 JK was CONSTANTLY falling out of first gear. Watched all the videos about the synchronizers needing to be replaced (which made no sense at all). Then I saw your video and thought what the hell and got the B&M shifter. What a difference. Been driving it for four months now with no more first gear issues. I will say that I was able to remove the foam isolator without dropping everything underneath. But what a product this shifter is. 100% recommend to anyone having ghost shifting issues.

I received the shift lever first and put it on. To remove factory knob easily I used a ball joint separator tool. (Looks like a tuning fork) After removing trim rings. Slip it over the shaft. Tap upwards with a medium size hammer. It pops right off. When driving I noticed less flex in the shaft. I like it already and I haven't even put the other part on. I also will get a better idea of the difference between factory and B&M linkages.
@bshinn666 жыл бұрын
Installed the shifter a few days ago, lever only, not the tower assembly. I did it mainly because of the dog leg in the B&M allowing me to use the front cupholder again. Mine had been popping out of 1st if I was not careful when I put it in gear, and I had intended to buy the shift tower in a few weeks. When I disassembled it, the stock boot was loose from the trans tunnel. I heard about an SB Mopar issued about the boot causing the tranny to pop out of gear. On a hunch, I deleted it when I reassembled. Holy cow, what a difference. The transmission feels totally different. Very little shaking in the shifter, gear changes are rock solid, and so far no more popping out of gear. The stock shift lever is a POS! I was concerned about noise radiating from the transmission without the boot, but it's not an issue. I have no fear of water ingress because the foam doughnut has that area sealed tight. As a bonus, due to the shorter lever, shift travels have been slightly reduced. If you're considering this mod, get the lever 1st, you might just save yourself $469.00. No way in hell I would install the shifter and reuse the stock lever!

After having my 2007 JKU Rubicon pop out of first gear for several months, I broke down and ordered this shifter. To say I am pleased with the results would be an understatement! Nearly a month after the new shifter install....not one pop out! The install was easier for me. I was able to get the shifter in without lowering the cross member and\or lower the trans. Much more secure and positive shifts with no vibrations. It is now more fun to drive my '07 with 110K on the clock. If anyone is having the same issues, give this B&M shifter a try.

So this mod solved your issue of first gear pop out? I have to hold mine in first gear (or else) and since they don't sell the fix anymore, I thought I might try this before going to a new transmission.
@pikdiesel6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it did. It has been nearly a month as my daily driver with no pop outs of 1st gear since install. I also read that it would need a trans pull and rebuild to remedy, but a $500 try is worth $2500 or more. The shifts are solid and secure. It takes some time getting used to, but way better than stock feel. I don't want to gaurantee that it will do the same for you, but for me it was worth a try and has been a success. I may need to pull my tranny at some point for clutch replace but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. At that point, I may have a rebuild as I'd like to get 200,000 miles plus out of my JKU. Good luck!

Now that I can reliably engage both 4H and 4L every time without feeling that I am breaking something it is time to get more precision out of the main stick. So, just completed this upgrade on my 2005 Jeep TJ Rubicon. The "only" downside is I had to do some cutting on the rear portion of my console so I could get the shift into 2nd gear. I also had to cut part of my gearshift floor plan cover gasket. These modifications resulted in my leather shift boot not fitting properly and a bit more transmission noise coming up through the floor boards. The speed shift is tight but I'm told it will loosen up. I like the short shift range - it does make driving the jeep more fun. I'm going to have a friend help modify my shift boot with an extension so it fits properly and I'm going to use some non-flammable rubber sheets to help pad under the console to help with the noise. Took a bit longer than I had planned, but at least I didn't have to drop the gas tank.
@jpi87264 жыл бұрын
My apologies if this question has already been asked and answered. Aside from the foam isolator, do you think there would be enough clearance to get the shifter in place without dropping the whole transmission 3 inches? Because that seems like a ton of work just to reuse a $20 part. I think I’d rather just invest in a new one before starting the install then cut the old one out. That way I can skip that whole ‘drop the tranny’ thing.

What? I'm not talking about vibrations from the drive shafts. This Jeep has Tom Wood's top of the line driveshafts and they are perfection. The stock shifter is junk, I changed that and am much happier with the new one... that is all.
@predkivlog7 жыл бұрын
I know what you are talking about, but all i was trying to say is that in my situation the shift stick wobble went away while driving just by replacing my driveshafts. Vibrations due transfer from one component to another if something is out of balance and it my case it was the driveshafts that did the trick on my shifter wobble while in motion.

Bruce Bracy I seem to have this issue plenty of times. I always thought that I was distracted (not paying attention to what gear I’m in), but then again it’s never an issue on any other manual ride. So I end up putting back in fourth and easing it back into fifth. It feels like to me that the fifth gear should be more off to the right - hard to explain but it happens so often that I guess it is an issue. Glad to see I might not be alone.

Wow, much different, having a little trouble getting use to it. The shifts are very short which is awesome, but It may need break in. 2nd to 3rd is my problem area because its at a different angle than the original shifter i believe, But wooahh is the new flywheel a blast. Also improved fuel economy.

Awesome so glad to see this. I’ve heard issues with these on the Wrangler but because I haven’t seen any actual reviews I was waiting to see this. Mine pops out of third gear all the time. Have you checked to see how the quicker shifts translate to accelerating ? Thanks for the video. If you don’t mind if you do a follow up review on how you like it in a few months. Thanks man and keep up the awesome videos.

I'll do follow up videos for sure. It's only a couple of days old and getting better all the time.

autoedit awesome man. Really want to get rid of that 1 foot of throw from 1st gear to 2nd gear lol

I was just curious, after installing the shifter just over two months ago, has it gotten easier/smoother to shift the gears?
@christopherkatz94844 жыл бұрын
I doubt it. Having a shorter throw will mean it will be harder to shift. You have less leverage.
@mikeybialucha27403 жыл бұрын
So i don't think this project is even worth it.. :/ How am I to enjoy shifting if it goes to a more hardened, and cranking feel? Shifting should feel as smooth as butter.

Nice!!! Reminds me of putting shifters in my fox mustangs back in the day!! Can’t beat that new feel!! Just subscribed and I’m looking for a Manual Jeep myself! Definitely will be doing this upgrade first!

I am interested how this works for you after using it for a bit. My 08 JKUR pops out on washboard roads all the time. If this is the fix I am in!
@AutoEdits7 жыл бұрын
This is the fix! I couldn't believe how much better it is now. No popping out of gear at all.

Any grinding of gears?
@peterbrophy94427 жыл бұрын
I was wondering that too if any grinding gears - My JK Sport 2015 does it frequently in Fourth Gear! Pretty annoying - you really have to pay attention to get it in there if not GRRRRRRRR!!!
@ronpippin48937 жыл бұрын
BTW look on eBay for a replacement transfer case knob. Sickspeed has the ball style ones to match your new shifter knob
@ronquin52726 жыл бұрын
Peter Brophy having bad synchros will give you that problem. I had to replace mine under warranty to get rid of the grinding and popping out of gears. This kit seems to help patch the problem though.

Now you need the Atlas T-case swap and a Twin Stick for the T-case. great video!

I did the same. Shifted worse than my old 1984 s10
@mfitze14 жыл бұрын
Yeah I should probably invest in one of these. I've had the jeep pop out of 4th a few times, literally have to hold the shifter in gear when going over bumps

Mine was third and that is unacceptable. This fixed that for sure.

+1 to manuals. One of the best features is the anti roll back on them. Came in handy quite a few times!

One thing you can get for the manual transmission shifter is the nested style rubber boot which is way better than that cloth vinyl thing that looks like a bag of you know what around the shifter. The telescopic rubber one looks cheesy but it actually works much better...

With my 2011 manual JK, I've driven 100,000 miles in 17months - city traffic, highway, off-roading and all. I like how smooth (and easy) the stock shifter is. I don't know if I could fight the shifter for 250miles per day (my average day driving). I love the fact that there's no wiggle to the B&M when it's in gear. I've never slipped out of gear with my stock shifter, but that's not to say it won't ever happen. When I shift, it's like butter...effortless...no shimmy, shake, or jerking of the transmission. Almost feels like driving an automatic if someone wasn't watching me shift. LOL! I don't know if I'm willing to spend nearly $500 for a shifter that requires more effort to shift for 250 miles per day. I can shift the stock with two fingers, zero effort. But the off-roading use of a B&M may be actually of great usage. I only use 1st and 2nd when off-roading. Hmmmmmm, thinking of maybe getting a 2nd Jeep and using a B&M versus using my work-Jeep for it. Amazing video! Watched the entire video. Perfect install and amazing detail to what you did to get the shifter in. I'm sure the dog was wanting to play the whole time. LOL!

That's a lot of miles to put on a Jeep. Glad your shifter works well. Mine jumped out of third regularly and that's not safe so something had to be done.
@MicDropBBQ3 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEdits if it's jumping out of gear, could be slightly bent shift forks. That shifter is a beast tho! Looked it up and off-rosters swear by it. Yeah, I trust this 3.8 like no other. It's never let me down! 17months of 250 miles days and it always makes it back to my driveway! The funnest ride ever, on top of that. I'll give this engine 300k miles before I do my next mod (5.7 Hemi with a 400hp clutch and adapter to keep my NSG370). I would hate to lose my reliable transmission, as this thing goes forever thru this desert climate and always runs well.

This is a common issue with the JK, I hear the JL manual shifter has lost all its slop and the short is much thrower! A must do mod for the JK, well done!
@RichKnop7 жыл бұрын
I was glad to see the dreaded shake is gone with that new shifter. I have a 16 JKU with the 6 speed and I haven't had any issues with it popping out of gear out on the trails but I have been popped in the knee a few times from the crazy movement in the shifter arm while wheeling. I may have to look at adding this to the list sooner than later.
@stephanecorriveau69827 жыл бұрын
I would suggest a shorter stick first (1-2 inches shorter). This alone could solve your problem and it would be much more affordable.

that Jeep not only needs that upgraded shifter, but it deserves it. You owe the dog though. For making her go off-roading

Idea for future video: Powertank. I have the 10lb tank I got a few years ago at Moab Easter Jeep Safari (are you coming this year?) and I LOVE it. It’s exactly the kind of simple upgrade I think you’ll love. Air up super fast after a run, use air tools on the trail, help buddies air up (because all their compressors take forever), even use it to blow out all the dust in your interior. I can air up 6 tires in the same time it takes my buddy to get 2. Pretty amazing. Lots of choices on “where/how to store/mount” it too. I chose in the rear, drivers side roll bar. Interested to see if you choose something similar.

I enjoy warching ypur videos, big fan. I installed mine a few months back and couldn't be happier with it, its worth the price. You should try and change the clutch system with a dual friction one.
