Curious Cars

3 жыл бұрын

Sure, the later town cars and Grand Marquis also ran the Panther Platform, but 1985 saw the beginning of the Europization of the Town Car, and 1990 a little more, and then 1997 a lot more. This 1983 model was all about sharp corners, chrome, opera lights, more chrome, and even wire wheel covers. It made no apologies, and was a true successor to American cars of the 50s and 60s, where it was OK for a car not to have European accoutrements. That day is long over.
Wind tunnels? Bah! Muted, conservative interiors? Meh. Less chrome? No way. There is nothing European about this car in any way, and the full frame, V8 ride with over-assisted steering and brakes is as Yankee as it gets.
And I love it.

If you've ever driven one of these, you know how the hood is so long and nearly horizontal that it almost feels like it slopes toward the driver - in a way that GM and Cadillac never copied. The hood ornament was a functional feature that helped the driver navigate. A wonderful experience.

@@johnsimun6533 I rented a brand new '89 Light Titanium Signature Series for the Barrister's Ball (law school prom), and my date and I were the sharpest couple there. That car sticks out in my memory as one of the nicest cars I've ever driven. It drove flawlessly and was handsome to boot. Another really nice car I remember was a 1983 Monte Carlo LS that had every option, including T-tops. high-end Prima velour upholstery, extra sound deadening, and cornering lamps. It was my friend's in college and loved driving it. It was so quiet inside, even under full throttle. I loved many American cars from the '80s.

Years ago, I bought a 1985 Town Car off a dirt lot full of old Lincoln vehicles. I paid for $900 for it and sounded just like this while accelerating and drove like a cloud with wheels. When the time came to get the A/C working it cost about $300 to fix a pressure valve and refill the system. One of the best cars I’ve ever owned❤️

I had an 83 back in 95. I was fresh out of high school. I bought it for $800 from an old man who was selling it for $1,500 and I offered him $1,000 and he told me to just give him 800 since it needed exhaust work. It was a no rust and clean gold exterior with a tan velour interior and a brown top. it had wire wheels which I didn't like since they were a pain to clean, especially here in Boston during the winters. oh, and during snowstorms, that car was a beast. It needed 2 catalytic converters (they were pretty much clogged) when I bought it. I got new cats and went ahead and put dual exhaust on it since it originally had single. a new H-pipe with 2 new mufflers and tailpipes. nice and quiet and helped free up some horsepower. The 'Fuel Injection was weird and funny. basically, 2 injectors shooting down the carburetor barrels. I liked how the keyhole had a plastic ring around and it would light up when I pulled the door handle so I was able to see while inserting your key when it was really dark out. The way the bumper stuck out like that and extended around the sides, protected the lincoln on 2 occasions. the first time, someone went through a stop sign at an intersection and hit me on the passenger side front. the other car was probably going around 15mph, it was a nice solid hit, and nothing happened to the lincoln. the second time it was basically a hit and run. I was outside my car across the street and some dude was pulling out of a driveway and tuned aggressively while ging faster than he should have and, Wham!! hit my car and kept going. his rear plastic bumper cover was pulled by the metal bumper of the lincoln and when I saw the way his car was I thought my car was wrecked. when I ran across the street to see the damage, only the black plastic bumper guards peeled off from the corner. I had them glued tight again shortly after. And I used to like driving down to NYC in the Lincoln during the mid-nineties. people used to try to flag me down all around town thinking I was a 'Pirate Taxi'. Good times, man... good times. Seeing your Lincoln in this video sure brought back memories, thanks!

I got into the limo business myself in 1992, so by then the company I worked for was already using the next gen (1990 -) Town Cars. I was a chauffeur 1990-97 & we had 6 6 passenger 1990 town cars then they bought a new 1994 town car 12 passenger it didn't have a passenger seat I forgot the reason why for that but I was the only full time employee at the time & was the only one who could drive it. After driving that every day for almost a year then getting into the 6 passenger it felt like I was driving a carrolla lol we had 1 corporate car and that was a 1989 town car. Didn't get driven much & had really low mileage. I always loved the way a lincoln drove. I think Lincoln's drive much better than the caddy's. My personal car at the time was a 1989 Ford LTD crown vic & loved that car. I always had big full size ford's love them & over the years from driving big cars my driving & parking skills are awesome. Also, he said the car is like 20 years old... but it’s 38 years old! If I told my parents that 1983 was almost 40 years ago they’d laugh at me. They won’t even believe 1990 was 31 years ago.

My parents had 2 of those! An 81 and an 86. I loved them both! I learned how to drive off of my moms 86. They were the best cars!... I ended up getting a Mark 6, 7, and 8 over time. Sigh, I wish they still made cars like these.

My grandmother had one, gave it to my dad, he drove it, let it sit in the yard for 20 years and now we have moved out of that house so the car had to go too. Very sad to see it leave. I remember it was brown and was a signature edition.

I blame 80's automotive 'journalism' for the complete lack of distinctive American cars today. Every damn report was basically 'this car sucks compared to a BMW'. They never could even address the decent amount of space, comfort, and power that American cars had and European cars lacked. Forget about the price tag and maintenance cost difference, it was also completely ignored. And God save you if you actually liked having digital gauges. Strictly an unforgivable taboo, despite their ability to keep your eyes on the road more because of being easier to read. Thanks for the great review as always, Bill.

@japanwatchconnection I've maintained and driven American cars/trucks from the 60s-2010s. In the 60's things were generally over-built but required a lot of maintenance. Every 20-30 thousand miles was a major service. Points, plugs, wires, fluids, brakes, and chassis lube service. However, take care of it and the vehicle would last. 70's were the same vehicle design but with flimsy sheet metal and a lot more cheap plastic (my 78 nova was mostly the same as a 68 nova). However we did have longer service intervals thanks to electronic ignition. 80's were the start of everything getting disposable, cramped, and hard to work on (even on this huge Lincoln most things are a pain to work on - I have an '89). Early computerized fuel injection systems were difficult to diagnose without special per-make diagnostic tools. In the 90's things got a lot better. Old school cars built like in the 80's but with much better electronics. Platinum plugs and better fluids = 100,000mi tune up interval we take for granted today. Late 90's - thanks to OBDII - are probably the easiest cars to keep working perfect since the 60s. We go downhill from here. During the 2000's things started getting complicated with multiple computer modules, increasing emissions regulations, touchscreens, stability control and so on. Now we have lane assist, self park, adaptive cruise control, electric steering, drive by wire, brake by wire, and slew of other electronics - modern cars are essentially proprietary computer systems on wheels. These are going to be like the 80's electronics all over again and as they age they will be expensive to repair. I have a 2017 I bought new that is about as simple of a car as I could buy - manual trans and minimal nannies. I'm hoping the car will continue to be cheap to maintain over the next 15 years.

Such a beautiful car. These were great cars. My Dad drove these for years.. used to be a Cadillac man and switch to Lincoln. I like both but completely understand why he enjoyed these cars so much. Looks like I'm going to follow in his foot steps!

The front end looks eerily similar to the 1977-79 Mercury Cougars but the only drawback was that throttle body fuel injection. If one small thing didn't operate on it properly, it would turn into a nightmare real fast.

I was the second owner of a white over white/navy leather interior 1984 Town Car Signature Series. The injection, BTW, is a throttle body unit. Probably the best car I've ever owned [there have been MANY]. I owned it for almost 10 years, along with several other cars, but the Lincoln was my designated road car. Got around 25 MPG. Loaded up with options including a little push-button array on the driver's door for remote entry. The OEM stereo was a 6 speaker JBL unit, with a cassette deck. It was like concert hall, and was a premium option. I regret, in retrospect, having sold the car. FYI, La Boheme [a wonderful Puccini opera, with its best performance by Luciano Pavarotti as Rodolfo] is pronounced with a silent "h." The song playing on the aftermarket CD unit was "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet," by Bachman Turner Overdrive. One of my favorite road tunes. Thanks for this video. Brought back a flood of memories.
