I've owned a 1989 560SL for 25 years. It only has 56k on the clock and drives like a dream. It is one of my joys in life. Nothing like taking a long drive on a nice weekend, top down and great music on the radio. Thank you for the video.

Just brought my 1986 560Sl/R107 home from some guys side yard in Oregon. The convertible top had not been opened or used for20 years, and was like new. I am knee deep into the restoration process. It had not been run for two years, and needs some TLC!

I’m an extremely inexperienced Mercedes enthusiast, having only recently acquired an ‘04 E500. I really enjoy listening to you wax on about the Mercedes brand. It’s like attending a course on ownership and history of them. I look forward to each post!

When you own a Mercedes you will learn all about them in time, the good and the bad. Never work for free, you want to learn from a real expert watch the videos on youtube by Mercedes Classics by Pierre Hedary, he is a true expert, not a salesperson. I was an owner for decades I know Pierre and will be looking for a manual transmission 350sl euro bumper.

Truely a beautiful machine! Just a slight correction, the 560SL was also made for the Australian and Japanese markets. I know because i own a an Australian delivered 560SL. The Australian model is identical to the one above except that it has more of a European look with the small bumpers and square lights.

In the early to mid-90s I had this car's competitor, a 1989 Maserati Spyder.
@Matt_from_Florida6 жыл бұрын
Reliability was the only area the Maserati Spyder came up short. For the time it was sledgehammer fast and put the Merc SL to shame. During the time I owned it Florida got rid of emissions testing and removing the 3 cats gave 25 extra HP. It had 4-wheel discs with 4-pot calipers front & 2-pot calipers rear so it stopped on a dime with great pedal feel. The seats had glove-soft Italian leather with cushions as soft as a living-room couch, so it also made a great Interstate car. All in all, I was very pleased with owning it. The 1989 was far and away upgraded over the 1986 Spyder, which was the first year. However by '89 the price was well over $50k. IIRC I got it in 1992 with only 7k miles on it at less than half price, as Maserati had just left the American market due to some moron suing them over not having an airbag bcuz Maserati had filed & been approved for a temporary exemption due to their low production quantity. BTW the Spyders were built offsite at the Zagato Body Works with a maximum production of 300/year for the USA market.
@Matt_from_Florida6 жыл бұрын
Don't hold me to it in a court of law, but I sold the Maser in ~2000 after putting over 60k miles on it. My wife drove it more than I did, so chicks dig it. She even used it as her daily for 2 or 3 years. It had its share of problems but it never left us stranded on the side of the road. For instance I went through 3 Magnetti-Morelli alternators in short order before custom-adapting a GM-Delco alternator to it, which included using my grinder on the aluminum engine-block! After replacing alternators at $500 a pop... desperate measures! Never touched the alternator again and the electric-windows had a new bounce in their step. The original BiTurbo had 14" steel wheels which were below its station, but the '89 had nice 15" alloy rollers with 205/50VR-15 tires. Compare that to the 205/65-15 rubber on the 560SL and you'll see that the Maser had rather more serious sporting intentions. I've nothing against Mercs. I love them. I remember well being carted around on the scratchy rear carpet of my grandfather's three W113s in the 60s/70s, when no one batted an eye at the inherent disregard for the safety of a small child! When my daughter was born I rigged a child-seat centered in the rear of the Maser. Her feet rested on the leather-covered armrest between the two front seats, which required me buying a new one. Anyway, I have nothing but happy memories of the car.
@MrCarGuy6 жыл бұрын
@@Matt_from_Florida Can't find those things anywhere. Although, to the point of lower tire profile being g equivalent to better performance, I don't think it has much causation. It just seems that lower profile tires are usually found on performance cars because of the need for larger brake rotors and calipers.
@bokkenrijder1725 жыл бұрын
Some interesting facts in case you're interested; 1) @5:40 Those alloy wheels are known as "Gullideckel-Felgen" in German, which translates into "manhole cover" because they look like a smaller version of those manhole covers you see in European streets. 2) @14:50 In Europe we (still!) don't have those annoying seatbelt buzzers that "sound like the U-Boot is sinking." 😂 (for example, my 2015 BMW 340i doesn't have it, thank goodness!)

Always found the wipers on these quite curious. They parked on the driver's side only (ie the passenger side on RHD models). The odd thing was because of this, the driver's side was cleared of water more thoroughly versus if the wipers parked on the opposite side. When fitted in the latter manner, like on a W126, the driver's side would only be wiped to just above the height of the instrument binacle. This was never ideal and left quite the forward-facing blind spot in heavy rain, so I always wondered why safety and engineering obsessive MB could have left the design that way

I've seen this version in the video listed at $45,000 here in the USA. But understand it was this version of the car in the video which is the most wanted. That being, '89 the last year of production, the V-8 car 560, Garnet Red paint a one year only color, and in immaculate condition. As well, I've seen a number of them listed in the $30's.

@@discerningmind Cheers, Many Thanks from the UK. I don't think we had the 560 here in the UK , We Had 450 & 500 SL. These Cars are a " World wide Icon " car. Not Really Suited to Where i Live in the UK. The Ideal car for the UK is the Much Smaller but very Quick BMW e30 320 / 325 i Soft top. UK Roads are so very Different to the Roads you have in the USA. Here we need Quick Fast Sharp Response Engines, ( GTI Style ) English Roads are like a RALLY Track. To Enjoy a Car it MUST Have a MANUAL Box & 5 or 6 Spd, Bend, Hill, Double Hairpin, Flat out for 20 sec's , Then Brakes Full on for a Speed camera, Then Flat out 2 minutes to the next village, The UK MPG of a 560 SL would be More than the Car is Worth. in a very short time. Petrol ( Gasoline is £1.29 Per Liter, ) ( $1.50 per Liter ) About £6.00 per Gallon. / ( $8.00 us Dollars ) Hence in the UK We Love all the Tiny Little GTI's & Very Small Sporting Hatches. To Handle the Bends & Narrow Lanes, & Still Deliver You With a FIZZ & a BUZZ about the Journey. Look up the Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9. UK /Europe Spec Cars. ( 1984 - 1994 era ) A car to ZAPP you anywhere within Seconds, & stick to the Road. Most buyers Crashed them Due to Lack of Driving Ability. Drive Here in England If you want to THRILL YOUR PANTS OFF ALL DAY EVERY DAY. Drive a 175 Bhp Car with Manual Box On Our Country Lanes . ( a UK Small car ) It Will AWAKEN your Driving Skills. & You Will FEEL ALIVE !

@@A1DJPaul Thank you for all that. When people think of big gas guzzling American cars, and cars like the MB 560SL what they never knew about is how far we have to drive, and particularly going years back. Our country is huge and spread out. The cars that we had were designed to be comfortable but more so to hold up to driving long distances. Years back small European engines would never hold up because our use here was so different than short jaunts in Europe. We've always been considered excessive with big cars but these had a purpose. Things here have changed a lot over the years as the population grew and towns grew offering more businesses so we don't have as far to drive anymore. But it's still a fifteen minute drive for me to get into town, so there are remain some distances one needs to travel here.

Lovely car in great shape but European headlights and bumpers are so much better, this car's dreamy looks are spoilt in my opinion by the US accoutrements! Values of this model have already skyrocketed, they remain a good daily driver as you say, but the hood operation makes them fussy to use daily in mixed weather like we get in the UK. The R129 model that followed this in 1990 not only took the marque into a different league technically it was far more user friendly with the first fully automatic hood. I love my SL320 - when the hood is working that is!!

Prices are to the Roof ??? yea but only for super clean low milage Vehicles those are a rare breed if you fallowing the market specially auctions you will see very quickly there is nothing to the roof on average Cars . Dealers may want that, and playing the don't miss out card to the fullest but reality looks a bit different at the moment . Average still brings average Money in the end !. There are way too much build and currently on the market . I see the same cars what you describe as to the roof just advertised for mounts and mounts completely overprices in some cases ! and not selling at all . They probably will go one day bur currently only special cars are bringing the Money in . And with the weak Euro /Dollar also Europeans are not grabbing them up anymore in big numbers .That may change a bit in the upcoming spring but right now its wishful thinking .They can be Money pits even with low milage cars nothing makes a car better from standing in some garage undriven and unattended for years .bringing them back to live and daily drivable standard can cost you some series Money . Just my two cents by fallowing that market very closly look up on the sales statistic on BAT for example , you will see the Roof is fare away . here just to enlighten you on that issue to the roof are only dealers what try to manipulate the market for this e cars reality looks bit different !!! www.classic.com/m/mercedes-benz/sl/r107-c107/
