Glad you launched this channel - I think a lot of car reviewers are still thinking about how cars have been for decades vs how cars will be going forward. There's a lot of innovation that will lead to the demise of some car makers so having a tech forward person like yourself giving your perspectives is great. But... I think what has made MKBHD so great is that the production quality has made it easy to follow your thoughts and observations. You're sorting out the audio quality (thank goodness), but some comparison graphics (range, charge speed, price, cargo space, intangibles like ADAS or voice recognition) make it a lot easier to see the comparisons you're making. I get that you're wanting this channel to be different in that it's more casual, stream of thought content, but I think adding a little more meat will add weight to these vids and make these a "must stop to watch" like your main channel. My 2 cents...

That load area in the footwell is def going to be an issue, from driving vans with that same sort of open footwell youve got to be really careful with how you secure your bag or whatever other kit you might keep there cause it can just skate about there if you don't, not something you want happening near the pedals. I don't know if that's a Nissan thing or just an EV thing, but I'm hoping they improve the speeds
@zero110102 жыл бұрын
There are lots of issues. The vehicle itself, and also the charging network you’re using. Dude is rich and used to his $120k Tesla and the Tesla network. Their charging network is leaps and bounds better than any other charging network. The Ionic 5 and EV6 can both charge from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes which is insanely fast! It’s awesome. But, realistically, you’re not going to find many 350 kw chargers (that function) to get those times. At some stations if a second car starts charging it limits power output. Many stations are basically broken. Any combination of a specific port not working to the payment stuff not working. Sometimes it’s the handshake between the port and the car. The edge that Tesla has is that it’s THEIRS. There is a standard and everything uses the same tech to communicate with everything else. The same port. The same handshake between the car and charger. The east ability to track if a car has a problem with a charger and create a ticket if there is an issue (that’s harder if there are a dozen ways things could go wrong and be the fault of the car maker, or the car owner).

The Ariya is supposed to get better speeds
@justinedwards24962 жыл бұрын
Technology connections just did a great video about this, if you have a house where you can plug into an outlet and charge, EVs are pretty easy to use 95% of the time. If you can get a NEMA 1450 outlet installed you can charge any EV from 0-100% overnight. Charging on road trips is gonna be difficult for several more years
@MattCasters2 жыл бұрын
@@tyrelirwin it's really not about CCS as a standard. All 250kW superchargers in Europe are CCS and the experience difference with the "competition" is the same as in the US. No, it's about the ease of use, reliability and the level of maintenance on the Tesla superchargers. There are smaller new players like NedFast that are pretty good as well though.

We shopped for and compared EVs for a long time. We ended up on the fence between ID.4, Ioniq 5/6, EV6, and Ariya. I was surprised, but after re-test-driving those, we choose the Ariya, because going back and forth, we noticed the interior quality difference, the comfort and the design. We're still very happy with our choice. The max charging rate may be lower than the Hyundai and Kia, but that only matters on a long road trip, and Ariya's charging curve is smoother, and fast-charging speed on a long road trip being slightly slower, is much less important to us than how comfortable we are sitting in the car for hours.
@yo2trader5396 ай бұрын
Nissan's max charging rate is regulated to prolong the battery life as much as possible. Frequent DC fast-charging is what degrades the battery health, so it's designed like that for a reason. Some automakers encourage fast-charging because they know they'll be able to make more money from eventual battery replacement or new car purchases. I don't think it's a good business practice.

Having owned several Leafs in the past then this car is interesting to former Nissan owners. I have had a bad experience with VW products so the ID range is not an option for me. Kia and Hyundai on the other hand have been great for the past decade or so. The Leaf has been great as a "2nd car" at home (24/30kWh) or main family "city car" (40/60kWh). There is simply nothing that seems to go wrong (or terribly wrong), just add electricity and then drive. The Ariya has more of the "gismo-stuff" that could perhaps fail... Still I'll definitely take it for a test drive when it will finally come to dealers.

Great video MKB! For me being a Nissan fan / owner of four previous models (2012 Versa / 2017 Sentra/ 2019 Altima Platinum / 2020 Rogue sport SL) this EV felt like a natural progression for me as my first EV and next family vehicle (I will be purchasing the Platinum e-4orce AWD model.) I really feel like it is a major step up in fit and finish, just like each of my leveled up models over the past few years and is nearing Infinity luxury level quality but in a Nissan branded product. I also really like how the interior is new but feels distinctively Nissan. One major owner benefit will also be with where I live the closest Tesla Service center is more than 60 miles / 1 hour away, where my local Nissan dealer is 15 mins away. So when cross shopping with the model Y the positive ownership experience of my previous Nissans was a big selling point for me and ease of access for repairs. I also know that Tesla offers mobile service repairs but I am thinking about major service issues that require taking the vehicle in. Thanks for a great video and letting me share a current Nissan owner’s thoughts.

I think he missed the biggest flaw which is that you have to go to the highest model to get AWD and that’s $59,000. So out the door you’ll be over $60,000. I agree with him that the Ioniq 5 has it beat in styling. I’m also a not a fan of the capacitive buttons, but I think the VW ID wins the prize for dumbest controls. The Ioniq 5 looks cool on the inside and has real buttons. I think the whole “It’s and EV so it needs futuristic impractical controls” is a mistake. Finally it’s such a crazy time for cars it’s hard to evaluate this as dealerships still don’t have inventory and are still marking up cars. The Ariya feels kind of late to the game to me.

"I think the whole 'It’s and EV so it needs futuristic impractical controls' is a mistake." I'd bet it isn't even that, but simple cost cutting - less components and cheaper to assemble. I have a friend that does cybersecurity audits for big european car brands, the stories of penny pinching in this industry are insane. I guess it makes sense when you'll be manufacturing a model for years, those little savings add up... but still, it sucks that they do it even when it is a considerable detriment to the user experience. I'd rather pay a bit more and have good ol' physical buttons, at least for the frequently used stuff.

I don't find it compelling for $50K. The outside is nice,I think I may like it more than you did, but I agree that the ID4 is better looking. Inside, it's quite slick but execution is lacking in some areas. The touch hapatic buttons on the dash and center console need to go as soon as possible. Not functional when driving and your forced to take your eyes off the road. I'd be surprised if it lasted more than a couple of years. Center, floor, portion ahead of the center console should have a large one inch indent so that handbags and back packs don't move around. They missed a big one here. It's not expensive to do and would be enormously handy. Seats look quite dope for a small SUV. For price and charging, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 charge MUCH faster, a factor for trips of any kind. The EV-6 is closer to $40K and has a nice interior and the dash is already sorted out well. The Ioniq 5 has the most interesting exterior imo. Nice review Marques! I just subbed to AF. Look forward to more!

I have been for a test drive in an Ariya, lovely in gunmetal grey/gray. Also tried a Model 3, IONIQ 5, EV6 (sat in) and Polestar 2. (Model Y next week!) Ariya has a presence that is hard to explain, both outside and inside. Beautifully designed and engineered. Superb driving position and very quiet. Capacitive buttons are the only UX flaw - I have had the 2018 Leaf and have a 2011 Leaf now as a local runabout, and both have tactile controls, so no idea why Neeeesan (!) tried to put visual appeal over driver safety. When you are driving and want to change drive mode, you are forced to look down at the centre console to find the touch control, as opposed to just feeling for a mechanical knob or button like in the Leafs and Polestar etc. Hopefully Nissan will fix the charging speed and ergonomics in the next model revision. However, I would still consider buying one because of the ride and known Nissan build quality and reliability. And I have an idea for how to mod the touch controls using my electronics experience. :)

Gave us literally zero problems that entire time except for a problem with the charger right after we got it, which they replaced for free. @ZealotFX Жыл бұрын
Agreed. This doesn't seem like a 20k upgrade over the Leaf. Storage is the only real advantage, otherwise there is just a bit more range (300 vs 230), a bit more charging speed (130 vs 100), CCS vs CHAdeMO, and updated tech. e-4RCE AWD will be big, but will be an added cost.

I have to say the Ariya has grown on me. It does look much more muscular/lean with the optional 20” wheels tho. But its interior is REALLY nice and high quality, especially in the blue leather option. It should be noted that Nissan decided to program the Ariya to charge at its max charge rate longer than an overall higher number. So it may not reach the peak of cars like the Ioniq 5/EV6 when charging, but it will charge at a more steady rate close to its peak, vs hitting the peak and tapering off. Still won’t be as quick to charge as those, but I don’t think it will be as slow as one might think.
