If there's petrol version, yes that would spark my interest! As for 'need', that's a very subjective word! I don't 'need' something that isn't fit for purpose and costs stupid money for what it is! I was initially very enamoured with all the previews of this but feel in daylight & in the absence of studio-lighting or when under the pallor of nighttime with super contrast induced by neon or high brightness lights. This ‘in the flesh’ has too much going on & is overwhelming the fundamentally funky design. I think the wheels which; look expensive; are nothing like the type of wheels shown on the first preview & production cars. These are very fussy, busy wheels & take away from the design clarity of the prototype. Funnily enough there’s something of the Mercedes EQS in these wheels & maybe they caught a very mild version of the Merc’s terrible quality of partially bringing into production a great & iconic prototype & messing it up in translation by; chickening out in; not building true to that designs purity. At least this is only a very mild case of the Mercedes EQS problem, because Mercedes couldn’t even go through with anything nearing the 3-D gorgeousness of the prototype, whereas at least the Renault’s 3-D shape is pretty much as promised - but there is a layer of fussiness that the original never had.

As long as it latches correctly & it's hermetic to wind & rain, I don't give a fridge about the sound. 🤣 More seriously, what a wonderful little 🥜 . I find the price at launch high too but I guess Renault is pulling a CyberTruck strategy, grabbing the easy cash first to recoup costs (it's a whole new platform after all) before giving us the cheaper versions in 2025/2026. I personally dig the minimalistic Evolution trim that will cost 27K€ (so 24K€ after EcoBonus). Not cheap (that will be the Twingo's job) but definitely affordable.

The most detailed review of this car I have yet seen, thank you. The obvious comparator is the range of Mini EVs. In their different ways both brands offer fun, stand out design, an attractive UI, and good entry level pricing. My personal preference is Mini rather than Renault but I could see why someone would buy the Renault - a matter of taste. I do wish car journalists would ban the short hand of “city car”. A more accurate statement in this case would be a car for where most of your journeys are within a 75-100 mile radius and there are plenty of rural use cases for that. As a household in the distant past we have had two Renaults and I hope reliability and cost of spare parts has improved. Also a consideration where I live in the UK would be distance to the nearest Renault dealer.

Great little car that really embraced the original cars design inside and out. What worried me was it needed 8 stops for charging to get to Paris around 850 km. My hybrid Austral, would probably manage that on one tank of fuel as I get here in UK over 700 miles per tank of fuel of 55 litres. As usual though you did a really good review and yes, I did watch the Renault Austral review you did a couple of years ago.

I really like the Renault 5 and its whole image but will probably wait for the ID2 to have a more in depth review once it’s officially launched on the road to make any decision, Love your reviews btw they’re always so much more in depth than other reviewers and I’ve been watching since your review of the 2016 polo GTI

I get what you mention about rather wanting to buy one car than one small one and one bigger one. But the reality is that if this means more people will buy this as their second car - their "city car" that will be a whole lot better than having them stick with diesel/gasoline cars for that purpose. And given how many people have several cars in their households anyway, it makes huge sense.

This looks really good! Always appreciate your reviews. The biggest flaws I see from this car : - It's not coming to Canada; - Those capacitive buttons on the steering wheel seem pretty terrible; - It does seem taller than it should for such a short car. I lvoe that it's a short car, but I wish the belt line / window line was a little shorter. I love small light affordable cars (EVs even moreso) so it's nice that people have better choices. It does have somewhat limiting range, so as you've pointed out, long distance travels aren't met without multiple stops. I personally think that's very much acceptable if you only travel long distances occasionally and can afford to spend some time walking around every couple of hours (which is good for you anyway).

@ThePilotGear I have a Renault Megane E-Tech with the same steering wheel and all the buttons are normal (not capacitive) so I guess it was a small mistake 😉

Nice review and car! 😍😍😁😁👏👏 If the steering wheel is like my Megane E-Tech, all buttons are "normal" (not capacitive) and the blinkers have 3 sounds and different volumes to choose from 😉

Love it. Has all the looks of the original. Faster charging and I would get one. Drive an Ionic 5 now. Great design too, better charging.

I have been waiting for a small city EV with decent range for many years. Renault not only accomplished that, but made it beautiful as well. I am a big fan of German cars Thomas, I own a Golf 7 and used to own a Mercedes E-class in the past. But German automakers are too late in bringing to the market a small EV like this one. I was waiting for the VW ID2, beautiful small EV with decent range as well, but I am too tired waiting. The moment I saw the R5 I fell in love with it, I am going to buy it, it would be my first French car.

So much for the new, affordable EV from Renault. £30k for the top spec in the UK. People who have money to burn on design alone will love it, but for the rest of the public who want a functional car, they are more likely to get an MG ZS EV or an MG4. Or an EV3 / Niro EV.
