Went to like 6 dealerships by me, every single one of them tried to screw me. I mean blatant crap like $2500 LoJacks and crap. adding like 8-10k to the listed price. I finally gave up and in desperation bought a nearly new car from Carvana even though I know it was 1,500 overpriced. Plus Carvana gave me 14,600 for my 2016 Miata while Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru wanted to give 8-9k. The dealerships the ruin the entire experience of getting a vehicle. I hate them more than anything.

I had a Lexus saleswoman attempt to gaslight me about the $80 charging cables that were added as an option. I told her I wasn't paying for that (among the other options like tint, wheel locks, cargo mat, and cargo net). she wouldn't let go of the charging cables. She kept telling me if I wanted the cables removed, they had to "remove the entire charging unit" from the vehicle. In other words, all the plug ins had to removed. I was like "WHAT?!" she was adamant about it, too. Even doing the psychology mind games in our 2nd test drive saying "who's going to drive your car home" to plant the idea that I already owned the car i was looking to buy. I told her "I'll Uber just like i got to the dealership." When I googled the charging cables with the price onlline, i told her "what's this?" And she had a deer in the headlights look and removed the price (while also making sure they weren't going to sneak it back in somewhere else) Salespeople are all crooks.

My guess is that car dealers like most any business person claims to be doing well whether or not they actually are because as my boss at the hardware store said to me years ago, people don't want to buy from someone who is not successful so never admit to not doing well, and if you are doing really well don't admit to that either because then they will look for a special deal from you because "you can afford it since you are doing so well", so when customers asked how business was going his stock answer was something like: well there are always challenges but we are still eating regularly his father had started the business just before the great depression of the 1930's began and managed to feed his 6 children through it all.

In my opinion, I think the one thing that needs a lot of improvement is transparency. Not just on the sales people, but dealerships too when comes to selling cars. I’m aware that these people are in the business to make money, but sometimes it can bite them in the ass when they slap all these add ons on a car that was listed for $25k online, but $31k-33k when you walk in there. To me, and no one has to agree with me, building a relationship goes a very long way (no matter what industry you’re in)

Transparency is the best policy for dealers, I do not know why dealers refuse to be transparent with consumers or other dealers. Sounds like you spoke with dealers that are completely disconnected from their business and the market (I see them all the time and it doesn't make sense to me). I am a new car dealer so it's a little different for us compared to independents but I felt the shift in the market coming and I started cutting my losses on old age units in March. It sucked but it was a necessity. The market is volatile at the moment so I stay away from late models with super low miles due to incentives coming back on new which kills my ability to provide our customers with sensible value. I will tell a customer in a split second that they are better off buying new. Yes I will lose that deal but they will usually come back to see me on the next one. We will never change the stigma that the car business has without higher levels of transparency.
