This made me think of when the Matterhorn was a major landmark on I5, now you can hardly catch a glimpse of it as you drive past on the 5.

Yep if I had to bet I think you see more space mountain than you matter horn now I do wish that they did something to prevent that but you can't unwind time and even if Disney did want to go back to the Glory Days too many people are there.

Autopia at Disneyland is the only one that is built on top of another attraction. Definitely an attraction of the era when it debuted. I half thought we would be getting a reference to Mr Wheeler motorist.

Now Disney Park fans want Autopia gone because of the amount of space it's wasting for new attractions to add for either Tomorrowland or Fantasyland, and also because the concept of cars and highways having a negative reputation over the years from pro-third place people.

When was the Fantasyland Autopia removed? Was it removed before or with Skull Rock?

Fantasyland Autopia was removed in 1999. Pretty sure Skull Rock was removed in the early 80's.

As a teenager below the driving age in 1956, when my family moved to Santa Ana CA, I was excited to see Autopia. When I did I was disappointed to hear those "lawn mower engine" sounds they made. I would, even back then have preferred them to be swift, silent electric cars as the future was imagined to be, and now is for me. Though I know how to fix and even rebuild an internal combustion engine, I have, thanks to Richfield's successors not been able to truly drive the future until buying a Tesla just a few years ago. Maybe Autopia is going to be popular in Anaheim and other car-centric cultures for several more decades, until the preteens of today grow up, but the time will come, that Autopia may have to be reimagined to be within the boundaries of Fantasyland, since it would then be outdated nostalgia like the Casey Jr train.
