Great video up to a point. Wish you had continued with "what if". Like what if the pump wasn't the problem, which is the problem I'm having. I have plenty of flow from the pump but there's no gas in the bowl. I'm assuming the float is stuck or there is blockage somewhere but I'm no mechanic. I wouldn't have a clue how to fix that or even if that's not the problem.

My 89 f150 is doing the same thing. Just converted from efi to carb and used a 2 barrel motorcraft my uncle gave me. I have a new low pressure pump on the rail and fuel line has some pressure but it's not getting enough fuel to fire without manually filling it up from a bottle until it's empty. I noticed when I tore the carb apart to check for a stuck float that the gas in the bottom of bowl was a mildly dark green. I have a fuel sock on the sending unit then an in line filter and the new fuel pump also has a filter but the one on the carb isn't new at all and the truck it come off of had been sitting in a barn for 8 years that I know of.

Great video! I recently replaced the carburetor on my 67 F100. The previous owner had that belief that bigger was better and had a Holley 750 on an almost stock 352 FE. I replaced it with a more street-able Holley 600 cfm with a vacuum secondary. When the swap was done, I was experiencing a very strange phenomenon... the pump would put fuel into the bowl, then suck it back out.... I went through the carb thinking it had to be the floats sticking or something similar on an out of the box brand new carb... Come to find out, MY 67 F100 (with the factory tank behind the seat) has no vent. I had replaced the cap a day before the swap with a new OEM style fuel cap, and the new seal did its job. This caused a the tank to have a negative pressure and was pulling any fuel the pump put in the carb back out. I removed the gas cap, after wrestling with the carb for a day or two, and turned the key and it fired right up. Other than buying a vented gas cap, is there another way to properly vent the tank?

As long as you covering fuel issues, how about an update on Mustang fuel gauges that don't work, and how the new replacement sending units are different in how they work (even though the ohms resistance is correct). Some of these senders are linear in their design causing them to be inaccurate in their reading. I am fighting with a '68 right now that has had the entire fuel system replaced (new tank, new "updated reproduction" sender, new lines and hoses) and the stock gauge still is not operational. Running new wire from the sender to a new aftermarket gauge is still not working. I think it has to do with the "updated" senders having a different resistance curve, causing the gauges to read lower than they should. Like you say, its never a problem, just another project. Thanks as always.

He kinked it trying to get it to line up correctly on the fuel pump. Any good source of prebent steel or stainless steel lines for the f100? Trying to do a concourse restoration so I don't want to go the all rubber route. That's why mine had a fuel problem. Not hard to kink them at the bend by the pump.

My '66 mustang sat for a few months, now it takes a small amount of gas poured into the carb (Holley 650) to start. Once it starts it runs for ever but after shut down it needs another pour, then it runs forever again. It's just on start up where the problem is. You may have a leaky power valve. If that is ruptured, the bowl will empty. If you have a lot of black smoke at start up, and it smell super gassy (not like after dinner at Taco Bell, more like fuel) this may be the issue.

3 months ago the Riv wouldn't start. i never ran it for months. I put some fuel down the bowl and it would start right up , but die. I thought maybe th epump was going bad or it was taking forever to pull it from the tank. After filling the bowl several times and getting it to run long enough to get some more fuel down the carb, it ran only with me manually giving it gas. After a few minutes of that it ran fine. Today i had to move it for my friend to pull my 66 out of the carport and same thing. i have a full tank, pump is working properly and it finally was running on its own after feeding it for a minute or so. I let it warm up for about 10 minutes and moved it across the street. It did the same damn thing! Started and died! I would say i have some varnish or gunk built up after it evaporated months ago, but it was running fine earlier. Could it be the acceleration pump? Maybe some oil dribbled down the shaft will buy me some time? The car is still across the street and i'd rather it not be so much in the clear view. Maybe i will have to rig up some sort off fuel IV for the damn thing

Good info, Jeff and Cam. I had an issue with rust in my fuel tank that would accumulate on the fuel pick up filter while the engine was running; causing enough fuel starvation to make the engine shut down. The rust would fall off of the pick-up after sitting for a while and the engine would then start back up. The cure was to replace the rusty tank. This was a very frustrating experience to say the least.

Frustrating for sure. I once diagnosed a car that would die on the highway after about 20 minutes of driving.....would restart by the time a tow truck arrived. Everything checked out fine on the car....I was stumped....then I noticed the gas tank looked new....talked to the owner and found out the car had been rear-ended and repaired.....I pulled the tank, and guess what I found? The new tank part tag was floating loose in the fuel.....as you drove it would gradually work its way to the fuel sock and wrap around it from the suction....after sitting for a while it would fall off....

This is what I think is wrong with my 1990 wrangler, it runs fine when going below 45 but when I take it faster it sputters backfires and dies, when I get it back from the shop where it's getting new cam seals I'm going to pull the gas tank and look at my gas tank and replace fuel lines, lets hope that fixes it
@williamcharles9480
@williamcharles9480 4 жыл бұрын
@@builtnotbought7787 The rust that was clogging my fuel filter was very fine, almost like a brown colored silt, not like the rust you'd find on something like a body panel. Simply pulling out the gas tank and flushing it out isn't going to stop the rust that is continuing to accumulate in the tank. Some kind of rust treatment has to be done to stop the rust and to keep it from continuing to form. Something that will also be compatible with gasoline. Another thing to consider is the fact that, if left untreated, the tank will continue to rust from the inside out, to where eventually small "pin-hole" sized leaks will start to appear in one or several places. There's a couple of options here, if a tank is available, you can replace it or buy one of those fuel tank restoration kits that are now on the market. National Parts Depot, NPD or Eastwood may have the kits as well as other "Restoration Parts" dealers. How well the restoration kits work is something left for debate.

On the '71'-'73's, you can pull the sending unit from the gas tank without fuel spillage as long as you have a 1/4 tank or less. Jack up the car from the driver's side and tilt it to the passenger's side, then pull the unit. Works like a champ! The repro sending units for these cars are not that great. The fuel outlet points the wrong way and the gas gauge will not read correctly. It takes some tweaking of the float to get the gauge to work properly.

Would you ever recommend running an electric fuel pump in parallel with the mechanical pump? I have an Edelbrock performance 429/460 and I think I'm having a problem with the bowl drying out at high speeds as I lose power trying to accelerate from higher speeds but it comes back as soon as I slow down some. I also had my first run in with vapor lock recently and would like to have a way to bypass that if need be. I was thinking about running a switch to turn the electric pump on and off somewhere in the dash area.
@waynep343
@waynep343 5 жыл бұрын
Kyle. Put a 10 micron filter before your fuel pump. I use 1984 corvette fuel filters. Disconnect the coil +wire so you get no spark at all. Disconnect the fuel line to the carb and extend it into a clean clear soda bottle. Get somebody to crank the engine for 15 seconds while you are watching the pulses of fuel into the bottle. Each pulse should be full and equal to the others . Not diminishing. No bubbles indicating an air leak or a torn sock in the tank. Do the 15 second test three times. This is usually enough to flush and sediment from the fuel pump check valves. When the check valves are dirty the pressure to the carb is reduced and it can't keep up pushing thru the needle and seat. When the engine heats up the lower pressure fuel in the pump and line to the carb can boil and turn to vapor. Causing vapor lock. As the pump can't pump expanding vapor.. I have been doing this 10 micron filter before the pump since 1983. It's the cure Not all filters are 10 micron. Many are 70 micron and let the Red dUST into the pump check valves and needle and seat
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 5 жыл бұрын
Wayne has a good suggestion. Remember though, a carburetor is set up to have a maximum of 7 PSI, some, like the Edelborck and Quadrajet are rated at 6-6.5 PSI. A lot of electric pumps will overpower the carb and flood it. So I'd stay with the mechanical for now. I'd do two test things: One, get a bunch of fuel hose the same diameter as your fuel line to the carburetor. Put a fuel pressure gauge in line and routed safely to the cowl where you can see it. Do a test run (go to the drag strip, stay safe people) and watch the pressure. If it is dropping below 4 PSI under load/high speed you have a delivery problem and the carburetor is indeed drying up. Remember, all that pump does is fill the bowl, the needle and seat and the floats control the amount. I'd then use our recommendations to seek out the issue beyond the pump. I would guess that there is a problem in the tank. Possibly the fuel filter there. As to the vapor lock, Look to fuel line placement on the engine. If the hard line is touching the block you have a hot spot and the fuel will often be an issue there. There could be other things causing your problems but I can't diagnose that here (no space) contact me at: jford@autorestomod.com

As for vapor lock I used old school tech...a wix vapor seperater filter and a return line.

@@kgooch69 that does not stop the cold start.. run for 20 seconds.. stall .. needs a minute of frantic cranking and pumping to get the engine to restart because the fuel ran back to the tank thru the sediment contaminated fuel pump check valves.. i have been at this for 40 years.

Watched the last one with the build looks like a great lift I see one in my future. I saw you roll the car on the lift with the casters I was wondering that when I watched the last video did not see anything on there site about how much the casters can handle.

@@AutoRestoMod sediment in the fuel pump check valves.. reducing pressure to the carb.. reducing suction pulling fuel up from the tank.. i put a clear piece of vinyl hose on the end of the fuel line up from the pump.. hung the end up on the hood latch.. cranked the engine with the remote starter till i got fuel in the hose.. when i stopped cranking the fuel went back down into the hose.. when i blew into the hose.. i could blow bubbles in the tank.. when i put the 10 micron filter before the pump.. and then did three, 15 second cranking full flow tests.. that was enough to flush the sediment out of the check valves.. the pump held pressure and no longer caused vapor lock by the reduced pressure in the line to the carb boiling and blowing the liquid fuel back to the tank... leaning out the engines and expanding the pistons and rings till they were seizing in their bores making it almost impossible to crank the engine for the first 10 minutes. and i totally agree that todays replacement mechanical fuel pumps sometimes put out too much pressure.. that is because the factory has installed the wrong spring.. or they have ordered the wrong spring.. or completely forgot what they were building and just went cheap buying springs by shape not calibration. i was just sharing what i found to work over the last 40 years of my professional mechanic life. if you want i could describe tuning the holley or edelbrock low speed circuit.. the fuel circuit that supplies all the fuel between idle and when the engine is running fast enough to create flow to pull the fuel out of the primary boosters.. its really not an issue for 350 to 360 engines.. but when you start getting bigger the IFR is too small and the system gets a flat spot.. that no primary jetting or power valve changes will fix as those circuits are not flowing yet. .

It is pretty dang cool. Smooth clean concrete is recommended, one small rock can stop the casters cold. It made the shoot SOOOOO much easier. Great guys to deal with too.
