Tyrrell shocked the Formula 1 world when it launched its six-wheeled P34 in the 1970s. The car won a race in 1976 before struggling to remain competitive, and Giorgio Piola was given a tremendous level of access to the design to create his detailed drawings of the cars at the time. In this video Piola talks about what it was like working with the help of Tyrrell designer Derek Gardner, and why the results were some of the drawings he is most proud of from his extensive career in the F1 paddock.

Giorgio Piola is an icon of F1. I love his drawings and always look forward to seeing them when posted. Great upload from Autosport, it's amazing hearing him speak and discuss his art. I could watch a series where he talks about each drawing for hours.

These vídeos/ interviews with the living persons who lived such projects, really take me to the legitimate moments of "Thrilling Joy" of the the Time. Just watch this "TJ ( term invented by Your servant )" in The Eyes of Giorgio Piola when he Remembers about his Top Down Drawing and the evolutions of This Project.

This tyoe of innovation is whats missing from f1 these days. Its getting closer and closer to a one make series. If you can take wildly disparate budgets off the table (which seems to be happening) and loosen the rules, then innovation will come back as the main differentiator.

Could you make a video about the different sounds you hear from the cars?

The 4 wheel rear drive seemed the next logical evolution for the F1 cars, from many any aspects, handling, traction, and aerodynamics. My suspicion is that some team owners with lots of money paid to have it banned specifically because of it's superior design qualities. The era of the ingenuity of the 60's and 70's that spawned the Tyrrel P34, and the later Williams 6-wheeler, succumbed to the big business aspect of modern F1. It's a shame that individual innovation has given way to conformity and homogenization, but that, as they say, is progress.

Making f1 cars have 4wd would be an undertaking since you'll be needing a shaft that goes to the front drivetrain, which is not easy since drivers seat really low in the ground. Only way this will be feasible would be a partial or full electric powertrain. But that will make alot pissed. My 2 cents

@@leodoz1016 Did you watch the whole video? I am referring to the Williams F1 6-wheeler that has 4 wheels in the rear, and they were all 4 powered, not the 2 front wheels. This was already done and it exists, but was banned by the racing committee. Watch the whole video and you will understand.

@@gravesclayton3604 oh that. Yeah it would bring in some interesting results, but I don't think the teams will do that in this era, especially when pitstops are essential in their races, unless Pirelli does long lasting tires, but the majority of fans will be in outrage then. Sorry i kinda misunderstood

This would be interesting, except that horrendous background music makes it unwatchable, please, there's really no need.

Fool, they didn't normally do pit stops then. And if you got a puncture, you only replaced that tyre.
