Loose watercolour demonstration depicting autumn Cow Parsley by Adrian Homersham
Details of brushes and equipment used in this demonstration are detailed below:
Hake Brush
This is a goat haired brush that has been used for centuries in both China and Japan. It is very versatile and can be used to apply large washes of pigment and to create loose textured areas; a great for loose wet into wet watercolours. The ones I use are Pro Arte Ron Ranson branded brushes. I find these shed hairs far less than cheaper alternatives. It’s useful to have these in a range of sizes and they can be purchased as a set of 4, please see link below:
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...
Goat Haired Calligraphy Brushes
These are again oriental brushes used in traditional Chinese ink and watercolour artwork. They are widely available from a variety of sources and are relatively inexpensive. I have a large collection of these however the brushes I use most were purchased from Jackson’s Art. I find these well made, capable of creating a reasonable point and don’t shed hairs. I use the Large and Medium sizes of this brush. Please see link below:
www.jacksonsart.com/jas-chine...
Paint
I use a variety of paint brands including Daniel Smith and Windsor & Newton in both the Cotman and Artist’s range. The Cotman colours are very economic to purchase and are used by both students and professional artists including Sophie Knight RWS.
Colours used Cotman Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson and Raw Sienna.

Paper Bockingford
The paper used for this demonstration was Bockingford 140lb NOT. This is a 50% cotton rag paper with a clean white surface. I find Bockingford is a wonderful paper to use when I wish to create granulated effects in my paintings.

Palette
Manufactured by Stewart these are very light and strong. The large open mixing area encourages loose expressive colour mixing.

Hi the paper I used for this work was Bockingford 140lb NOT. This is a 50% cotton rag paper and is relatively inexpensive. It is a wonderful paper to use if you like granulating effects and was used extensively by Edward Wesson and Ron Ranson amongst others. It’s a great paper to use if you feel intimidated by really expensive brands.

I use the Cotman line of colours a lot and find them very high quality. The Cotman colours are very economic to purchase and are used by both students and professional artists including Sophie Knight RWS. If you are looking for high value paints take a look at Sennelier artists quality paints at an affordable price. Thanks for viewing.

Adrian, Your loose style challenges me to the edge of my seat as I watch you paint “effortless,” arresting works. I notice that you use many Asian-style brushes. What’s the benefit? I ask because of my limited experience with them.
@adrianhomersham8544

Hi Douglas thanks for the positive feedback. I like using goat haired Chinese brushes as they can create a reasonable point to paint shapes and be manipulated with the fingers to create an irregular fan which is great for creating texture. They are also fairly cheap to purchase.
