December Grasses, Expressive Watercolour Demonstration

Hake Brush
This is a goat haired brush that has been used for centuries in both China and Japan. It is very versatile and can be used to apply large washes of pigment and to create loose textured areas; a great for loose wet into wet watercolours. The ones I use are Pro Arte Ron Ranson branded brushes. I find these shed hairs far less than cheaper alternatives. It’s useful to have these in a range of sizes and they can be purchased as a set of 4, please see link below:

Goat Haired Calligraphy Brushes
These are again oriental brushes used in traditional Chinese ink and watercolour artwork. They are widely available from a variety of sources and are relatively inexpensive. I have a large collection of these however the brushes I use most were purchased from Jackson’s Art. I find these well made, capable of creating a reasonable point and don’t shed hairs. I use the Large and Medium sizes of this brush. Please see link below:

Sword Liner Brush
I find the sword Liner a wonderful brush for creating expressive loose marks particularly when painting trees, grasses or shrubs. Made by Pro Arte they come in 3 sizes and can be either purchased as a set or individually.

Paint
I use a variety of paint brands including Daniel Smith and Windsor & Newton in both the Cotman and Artist’s range. The Cotman colours are very economic to purchase and are used by both students and professional artists including Sophie Knight RWS. Colours used Cotman Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Umber and Raw Sienna.

Paper Fabriano Artistico
The paper used for this demonstration was Fabriano Artistico EW 140lb NOT. This is a 100% cotton rag paper with a beautiful bright white surface that aids the creation of vibrant translucent watercolours.

Palette
Manufactured by Stewart these are very light and strong. The large open mixing area encourages loose expressive colour mixing.

Hi Jacqueline the long brush that can create both wide strokes and fine lines is called a Sword Liner they are not expensive to purchase and redily available; the one used here is a Pro Arte Series 9A medium. Thanks for watching.

Admire your work so much & have learned a lot, thanks. Also would like knowing your pigment-water ratio as I have problems scraping; either too wet or too dry?

Hi Margery thanks for viewing. Regarding pigment-water ratio and scraping I tend to use quite thick consistencies probably about 50.50 in ratio. The main trick is to judge when to scrape. Too early and the mark will refill with wet paint, too late and the paint wont scrape, as with all things practice is key.
