/ adrianhomersham Loose expressive watercolour landscape demonstration video by Adrian Homersham.
Details of brushes and equipment used in this demonstration are detailed below:
Goat Haired Calligraphy Brushes
These are again oriental brushes used in traditional Chinese ink and watercolour artwork. They are widely available from a variety of sources and are relatively inexpensive. I have a large collection of these however the brushes I use most were purchased from Jackson’s Art. I find these well made, capable of creating a reasonable point and don’t shed hairs. I use the Large and Medium sizes of this brush. Please see link below:
www.jacksonsart.com/jas-chine...
Sword Liner Brush
I find the sword Liner a wonderful brush for creating expressive loose marks particularly when painting trees, grasses or shrubs. Made by Pro Arte they come in 3 sizes and can be either purchased as a set or individually.
Pro Arte Sword Liner Set

Pro Arte Individual

Paint
I use a variety of paint brands including Daniel Smith and Windsor & Newton in both the Cotman and Artist’s range. The Cotman colours are very economic to purchase and are used by both students and professional artists including Sophie Knight RWS.
Colours used Cotman Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Lemon Yellow and Raw Sienna. Windsor & Newton Artists Brown Madder
Cotman Watercolours

Paper Fabriano Artistico
The paper used for this demonstration was Fabriano Artistico EW 140lb NOT. This is a 100% cotton rag paper with a beautiful bright white surface that aids the creation of vibrant translucent watercolours.

Palette
Manufactured by Stewart these are very light and strong. The large open mixing area encourages loose expressive colour mixing.

What an expressive landscape! I was thinking noooo! when you reworked the burnt sienna focal point... but those last dark dots and dashes were genius! Your hands spend more time on mixing the paint and getting the brush loaded and ready and moving around away from the paper, then suddenly something explodes into the picture, just nano-seconds of creating the outer counterpart to the inner vision. Absolutely fascinating! Beautiful painting. Many thanks.

Thank you so much for you encouraging feedback. When I look back at videos of myself painting I am always surprised how little time the brush touches the paper. I find painting with quick rapid marks helps to generate movement and energy within a painting and helps to avoid overworking.

Just watching the process of this painting coming to life is mesmerising. I have watched it over and over trying to see if there is any way I could manage a version of this with my brushes but alas, I think not. I just adore this painting and I will continue to watch it until some day I have the courage to take up a brush and start my clumsy effort to create those tiny touches of magic that you apply that seem so small and almost unintentional but that make the painting really cohesive. Did a version of your 'Cow Parsley' which in my books was a roaring success (for me) 😁. I just love your technique and the colours you often use. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing all of this with us :-)

Inspiring Adrian! Do you have any plan when you begin, or do you just go where the moment takes you?
@adrianhomersham8544
@adrianhomersham8544 4 жыл бұрын
Hi John I usually work from a mixture of plein air sketches, memory and photographic references. I also try to allow the paint to direct me a little. Establishing where the lights and darks should go is key and limiting your palette helps to create harmony within a painting. Thanks for watching.

Love your style of painting, thanks for sharing. Any reason why you only paint such small paintings?
@adrianhomersham8544
@adrianhomersham8544 4 жыл бұрын
Hi John I originally started painting small due to space restrictions. I also found as I was developing skills with watercolour that smaller sheets of paper were less daunting than a half or full sheet. I have slightly more space now and do intend to scale up my work a little. Thanks for viewing Adrian

Hi thanks for viewing. I usually paint from a mixture black and white sketches and colour photos and painted sketches. I always paint locations I have visited myself, this allows me to add a personal interpretive response to my work.

You make expressive marks with a stick and then cover them over???
@adrianhomersham8544
@adrianhomersham8544 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill thank you for watching. I quite often make marks onto the paper which subsequently become covered with paint; I find that the marks made into the paper with a stick or pencil will fill a little with pigment and create a subtle mark that still shows through the paint.
