For Framemeister (if you choose that) - you can just get the FirebrandX profile files, load those on a micro sd card, pop that in the back of the FM and load it with the remote when you change consoles. There's no need to worry about settings because that guy is a perfectionist and has done all the work for you. Also, you're going to want to update the FM's firmware as soon as you get one.

8:11 I tend to disagree. If you're trying to primarily record interlaced video content, you don't need to go all out and spend obscene amounts of money on a Framemeister. You can get away with using cheaper consumer grade SCART or component scalers, since the interlaced output coming off the console is little different to a VCR or DVD recorder. Same deal with 480p. Again, most component scalers are built to expect such resolutions. The Framemeister and OSSC do have handling of 240p content beat though.

The one huge advantage the Framemeister has for PAL users is that you can actually strech the image to correct PAL videos squashed pixels (or borders if you like). That was a great video man. It's always nice to see these old classics well captured and well presented. Also, you need to do a review of Breath of Fire IV, and maybe also the PS2 Castlevania titles. It seems that no one is talking about these games for some reason.

I'm having a problem that I hope maybe you can help with. I have a pretty Legendary game room where I play all my games on a high-end ViewSonic HD projector with a 130 inch screen and Bose surround sound. All my gaming looks great except when I try to play the PS2, GameCube or Wii. I've tried a few cheap and even mid-priced S-Video to HDMI converters but, for example: when I play Soul Reaver 2 on the PS2 the gameplay is extremely dark. I don't have this issue when I hook it up to a regular smart tv. I was thinking of getting the Framemeister for its ability to change the brightness among the other things in it's built-in menus. However, do you have any suggestions that might be more affordable that can brighten my games when playing on my projector? Thank you so much!

I had Panasonic G30 plasma working just fine with ossc, the thing is; firmware panasonic TVs shipped with from 2008 to 2014 was kinda broken especially in game mode, updating it to the newest version fixed all the issues I was having, but it's really weird how tvs with exactly the same gamma error and compatibility issues out of the box where shipped for so long, and they knew about it because it was fixed within a few months after each model was released.

Awesome info. Just starting to get back into retro gaming. Wound up getting a decent flat screen CRT from my boss, and running a PS2 via component on it looks remarkable. I did get bit by my lack of research and bought a NIB GameCube that doesn't have the digital output for component, but your illustration for S-Video vs Component/Composite makes me feel a bit better. As an aside, I never thought I'd play any game from the PS1 again in my lifetime due to the wonky controls most games have. Your Silent Hill Retrospective changed that, and I've been enjoying Silent Hill 1 in all of its dithered glory, and I've been loving every minute of it. Already have Silent Hill 2 and 3 in hand for when I finish it!

That's the best new I heard all day!!! Getting people into old ps1 games is literally my job! Very happy to hear that. Also, svideo is a great looking picture most of the time, but it looks amazing on a crt. On that kind of a tv, the difference between comp and svideo won't be so obvious that you'll notice without really looking for it.

Wow, I love how much detailed you were in this video! You're amazing! The framemeister image you got on Silent Hill 3 at 14:15 is so beautiful!! You're right in saying that it is much better for interlaced content. For the OSSC, it's the psp footage that impressed me the most. I might default to OSSC in the end since it's twice cheaper and bob deinterlacing imo is good enough. Got a question. Have you tried the PS2 component cables instead of composite? I'm curious to see if they makes a big difference combined with OSCC or Framemeister.
@AvalancheReviews3 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I exclusively use ps2 component cables and the difference is very noticeable. All of the PS2 footage in the video was was captured using them. I'd say that's the only way to go if you're getting a scaler. Remember, the higher quality video you put into a scaler, the higher quality upscaled picture you'll get out of it. So whenever possible, use either RGB Scart or Component cables.
@BebopMansion3 жыл бұрын
@@AvalancheReviews I got my OSSC (yay!) and I got another question =/ Which capture card are you using to capture OSSC footage? When using my PSP component with 2X, the resolution is 900p I think and my Elgato HD60 doesn't support it. I'm now thinking that I'll have to deal with pretty odd resolutions throughout many device and scaling settings so I wonder which capture card can get the job done.
@CastleManiaGames4 жыл бұрын
So on the topic of lag - its variable lag that is/ can be a ruined experience. The Framemeister only has 1 frame and its constant so this isn't an issue. The low quality cables not covered are the ones that can really change how the game is experienced. Depends on the game and all of this assumes your display is put in game mode.
@AvalancheReviews4 жыл бұрын
This is very true. Anyone can adjust to constant lag, but when it's a saw tooth, you never know when the game will react to your inputs.

Panasonic HZ2000 is latest and one of the best oled tv that has component and composite inputs build in! It’s a 2020 model. But can external adapter compete with internal adapters? Or is this a stupid question?

I know you're an actual hardware sort of retro KZbinr, but is there any chance you'll talk about emulation outside of the couple instances when you *have* to use it for something (like with the RE rail shooters, when you tested how awful the Wii's motion tracking was, or when talking about the RE2 and RE3 Seemles HD). I love talking about the ins and outs of upscaling and signal converting, but it's all so prohibitively expensive. The gcomp is $240, GCHD is $150, the OSSC is ~$150 as well. And that's not even considering the costs of some of the most outrageous games on the market (I bought my copy of Rule of Rose in highschool for $20. It's now $550 for a *used copy*. Haunting Ground? $300. Kuon? $650. Lunar, ~$100 depending on condition.) The upscaled picture looks amazing, don't get me wrong, and the novelty of upscaled picture on actual hardware makes me a happy tech nerd, but the chances of me actually being able to spare the cash for it in the next ten years (and having the space) is incredibly unlikely. Yet the best possible picture I have seen for most retro games I have played comes out of PC emulation, and depending on the game, there is the possibility of working widescreen hacks allowing a 16:9 picture without model stretching (for games in full 3D) at resolutions at and above 4k, and since it's on PC it negates the issue of YT content creation and streaming. Emulators are free, and in my experience play most games perfectly fine with the right settings. I try to find videos honestly comparing the two so I could see the pros and cons of actual hardware upscaling versus pure PC emulation, but all I find is either footage of just emulation, retro elitists shitting all over emulation, or the odd video from creators like you that occasionally do show emulation comparison to actual hardware, like with the RE2 and RE3 ports. I just want an honest objective comparison of the pros and cons of the two upscaling methods, because though a lot of this upscaled footage looks amazing compared to what I can do with my shitty OG composite cables from my PS2 into my one small flat-screen TV (don't have the spare money or room atm for a CRT, or a bunch of cables, etc.), I also know my computer can produce an even better picture through emulation. Someday, if I get lucky and can devote a room to a larger television and a home theatre setup, I definitely want to get the physical real hardware upscalers, but even then I would be terrified of getting shoddy repro carts for the expensive/rare games, needing to hack real hardware to get the best picture/play repro discs, etc., compared to something like hooking a computer to a large TV and emulating a PS2 game in 4k.

I'm still a tad confused. I recently got back into playing on my old PS2 and got a basic component set up running on my fllatscreen. If I wanted an upscaler would the Retrotink still be worth it? What would happen if I tried to play a game like Gran Turismo 4?

@AvalancheReviews4 жыл бұрын
Yep, the Tink 2x will work fine with it, but it'll be stretched to fill the 4k screen, which means you'll lose some sharpness. You'll be going from 480 lines of vertical resolution, to over 2000. So scaling the picture that far will take a little of the original punch out of it. I've heard the ossc is way more compatible with 4k panels.
