My travelling on long distance journeys in Britain are sadly now very few. When my mother was alive and living in Huddersfield My partner and I took the Eurostar to St Pancras. Then used the West Coast mainline to Manchester Picadilly Then took a TPE to Huddersfield. The service in first class was always good in my experience and always surprisingly quiet - yet with advanced fares we could get good deals. Once because the Eurostar was late we missed our scheduled train and found that a journey to Leeds and a night in a hotel (because we couldn't get a train to Huddersfield that late) was about a third of the price of a hotel in London on a few hours notice. The East Coast staff were very helpful too. (but they were in one of their nationalised phases then)

Typically, Avanti (more likely First Group) opted for a cheap version of the IET with no tilting technology (unlike the Voyagers they replace). This will invariably mean the where the IETs are used of the West Coast mainline, they will undoubtedly end up delaying following Pendolinos - don't forget that on some parts of the route the frequency of trains is every 5 minutes. I've already heard rumours that when the Pendolinos are life-expired, the replacements will be non-tilting (slower journeys but you can bet the fares will increase)!

The theory with the IETs is that despite having no tilt, the acceleration is quicker than the Pendolinos, thereby making up the difference. All due, allegedly, to advances in electric technology and losing the weight of the tilting mechanism. How it works in practice we'll see.

Unfortunately I have no choice but to use GWR who rank as fast yet the most expensive and very poor service in 1st class (it’s the same as standard you just don’t pay, but choice is so limited it’s not worth it). Then at the top by a country mile is Avanti. What a difference. It’s actually cheaper per mile than GWR, just as fast but 1st class is wonderful. Again - it’s a luxury but what a difference. It's a shame that HS2 was marketed around passenger convenience and journey times instead of the freight capacity that it's actually for. There's been loads of mis-management, but the public attitude of "£40bn for a trivial time-saving for passengers" has done absolutely nothing to help.

@@NonstopEurotrip If it was all about freight, the UK could have added another track alongside the present tracks, if necessary expand the right of way three meters and rebuild bridges a hell of a lot cheaper than the huge BOONDOGGLE cluster fuck of HS2....

The majority of the Pendolino fleet were built at the former Metro-Cammell works at Washwood Heath in Birmingham and not imported as stated in the film. Only the 2nd batch of units and adittional carriages to lengthen a number of units were built outside the UK as the Birmingham factory had been closed by the time these were built. Also when in the UK please use miles rather than kilometrea as this is the standard unit of measurement here.
@NonstopEurotrip2 ай бұрын
Please watch the video properly before making a comment that is explained in the video. I use both km and miles in all my videos. Km are far more used worldwide, so that will always be first.

Consider the reality of UK train travel vs. its counterpart in France The rail journey from London Euston to Glasgow is approx. 650km and takes 4.5 hours minimum The rail journey from Paris Gard du Lyon to Avignon TGV is approx.680km and takes 2.75 hours So 5% further but close to 40% faster, platform to platform (in France) Cast your mind back to the 1960s and Harold Wilson's boast about the "White Heat of (British) Technology" Comparable advanced Western Liberal Democratic States but significantly different long term outcomes - who do you think has fared better?

Problem with HS2 if you live south of Birmingham it is a pointless exercise, from Birmingham Airport, Coventry, Rugby, Northampton and Milton Keynes passengers will still have to use the slower Avanti and semi fast slow services. First class in the UK is ridiculous, it is as if they don't want to do it. Hence the Premium Standard class. no food and less than half the price of 1st. There are also different ways to get to Liverpool. - Direct - the dearest, via Crewe is next and then its via Birmingham, takes the longest and is the cheapest.

Late comment, just got back from a holiday to UK. Coincidentally, I and my partner took this Pendolino train back and forth to Chester (and connected with TfW all the way to Wales). We only bought standard class as the first class price is as you say 'extortionate'. I would say it's a decent ride with some nice scenes along the way, but people who are suffering from motion sickness might feel some vertigo due to the tilting motion of the pendolino. To conclude, it was a good ride but nothing special. And as you also mentioned, Euston is one hell of an ugly station. It has no appeal nor grace whatsoever

You won't get much disagreement about the need for HS2 from your subscribers, but there are two issues: 1) The previous government sold the land that they had previously acquired. 2) There is no money. Recently, I watched a video about the UK's economy, which mentioned a 'lost decade'. While one should take any KZbin video with a very generous helping of salt, the arguments brought forward did sound reasonable enough. Considering that the incumbent government keeps mentioning that they don't have any money, and that there's going to be pain, HS2 doesn't seem to be in the offing - even though it would improve the UK's economy in the long run. They should consider using different traction than a Class 66 if they want to be truly green, though. Although there are probably too many non-electrified sections, but I know very little about that.
@NonstopEurotrip2 ай бұрын
The land is in limbo at the moment while decisions are made and there's always money, it just needs reappropriation 😆 In reality the UK should have 5 or 6 high-speed lines by now and the economic benefits will be endless 🚆

@@NonstopEurotrip Yeah, but you got austerity after the 2008 financial crisis (after the elections, with the coalition and successive governments). Then the Brexit referendum came. Then Covid-19 hit, and even more was borrowed than in 2008. So you have a seriously high debt-to-GDP ratio, but also an economy that has been sluggish for a long time. I'm not going to give voting advice, but I'd invite anybody to look at the figures, and make up their own mind.
