Dan: "Who would have thought that a three hour long drug filled orgy type movie that was released during holiday season would do well? Why wouldn't you pump a 100 million into that movie." My mind went straight to wolf of wall street which fits this description perfectly both being Rated R. It's good atleast that movie did well.

I think James Cameron learned a long time with Titanic (30% domestic/70% international) that to truly crush the box office you need worldwide appeal. Some western audiences may find Avatar 1 (27% domestic/73% international) and Avatar 2 (currently 30/70 split)'s storylines simplistic and deriviative but, in the case of Avatar 2, a story about fighting for your family and protecting nature resonates with everyone around the world. In fact, out of the 5 movies that have grossed 2 billion+, only Force Awakens had more than 35% domestic lifetime gross (45%).

Personally, all Avatar does for me is make me want to watch "Princess Mononoke" again when there was a more, how you say, varied perspective that took one movie just slightly overt two hours to get across more than, so far, these 2 3 hours VFX reels have. Also, the other way is that he also figured out long ago that Christmas time is a pretty brilliant time to release a blockbuster since there tends to be very little competition to fight off.

Avatar and titanic were re-released multiple times to get such high box office. Re-releases don't do big domestically, so the foreign numbers get bigger, bit usually the bulk of the box office is domestic. I remember avatar the first one was in theaters for such a long time too to get such high numbers. The world love marvel movies at this point. And star wars is this really strange property that America only seems to like, a mix of nostalgia and fake nerd-ism.

It is doing well but it is seriously telling of the market’s issues with non IP films when $30M + domestic is being celebrated. For the budget it is fine, no doubt. And the overseas numbers are also pretty strong. But it isn’t a juggernaut. Barbarian made more domestically (it also carried a small budget, less than $5M)

Between her original flops in Amsterdam and Babylon, as well as her flops with Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad (which couldn’t even do well compared to other HBOMax day-and-date movies like Kong vs Godzilla; The Conjuring 3; and Dune); Margot Robbie better hope Barbie is a success otherwise she might be done getting roles in big studio movies especially as she’s likely not going to be Harley Quinn going forward.

Something tells me she'll keep getting casted in things. Also she's pretty talented so if she has to fall back to more independent(and let's be honest better) movies I wouldn't have a problem like that. I mean who's surprised about a dc movie that flops even the rock couldn't right that ship. She along with like a dozen stars got tricked into assuming David o Russell couldn't make a terrible movie. Honestly as someone who has no plans of watching it bale is the only guy I knew was in the movie off the top of my head. Also while I want to see Babylon before I agree with critics I don't think any one is surprised a 3 hour movie like that isn't going to do good at the box office. You could have switched the entire cast for better or for worse and I still would have predicted that movie underperforming. I think as long as people and the media continue to view her as a superstar she'll continue to get those roles despite sales.
@namikpaul7505
@namikpaul7505 2 жыл бұрын
@@shanetaylor761 You just made an excuse by blaming everyone except her, without even having seen two of the movies? And how do you do ‘better’ in independent movies over DO Russell and Damien Chazelle, both of whom are far from Blockbuster hacks? She’s massively overexposed right now, and in high profile duds. If Barbie doesn’t get critical acclaim at the very least, she’s going to have to take a break, voluntary or otherwise.

@@namikpaul7505 not when she’s pumping out Academy award nominations. Having seen both Babylon and Amsterdam she gives the best performance in both and will 100% get her 4th Oscar nomination. I wonder how much impact the storm had, given it was Christmas weekend, Christmas Eve had last showings at 7:30 to begin with. So Saturday was going to be a bust anyways. On Monday I caught Babylon, there was a family of 5 ahead of me going to see a 2D showing of Avatar. 70 dollars for them for tickets. Yeah, can see why Disney + premium on demand looks so appealing. I did enjoy Babylon, bad reviews helped lower my expectations. I don’t get Paramount changing the release strategy for Babylon. The trailers had it opening December 23rd in select cities to make the awards deadline, then expanding the release January 6th. Then suddenly, it got changed to everywhere December 23rd. How many people outside New York and LA even knew it was in their town? Feels like Paramount botched the release like they did rolling out William Friedkin’s “Sorcerer” 2 weeks after “Star Wars.”

People have to remember that the first Avatar was in theaters for almost an entire year. It was absolutely insane the dominance it held for so long. 13 years later and the market for movies is completely different. I definitely think it can get past Maverick, but I don't know if it can get much past that. It really just depends on it's longevity. Avatar 1 had weekend grosses in the tens of millions months and months after release. It's staying power was unlike anything we've seen since. If the second one can have even half that staying power it'll get close to 2 billion, I believe. Really just depends on if it can keep up the demand for it to justify keeping it theaters well past week 10 and beyond.

Avatar passed Titanic for highest grossing movie ever in less than 6 weeks. It made 80% of its box office haul in its first 90 days. Doesn’t matter if a discount theater held onto it for 6 months. By then, the DVD was out.

And at the current pace, Avatar 2 will pass Top Gun by the end of next week.

I think most feel pretty skeptical about any single new IP movie ever pulling off the Avatar (2009) trick again. Even the ever confident James Cameron was blindsided by it.

Hey Dan I remember you were making a distinction for billion dollar movies last year that have gotten a Chinese release..do we know if this 1 Billion dollar box office includes their earnings there? If so what would have been their performance without it?

Avatar is probably going to make 3 billion. Ask yourself, what are people going to watch in January? It's gonna be a wasteland. Then in February, Oscar hype for Avatar will build and it'll still be holding fairly strong. 3 billion. Save this comment.

I think Avatar 2 arriving at 2nd place domestically is a long stretch. It would have to almost double it's B.O. on the back end... It can do it, but I'd be very surprised if it rose above 4th place domestically.
