The thing I will say about Paramount paying themselves to stream their movies on Paramount+ is that it’s more or less a requirement they need to do in order to to calculate how much they need to pay in terms of residuals and any profit participation deals. They just value it at the market rate (how much they would have gotten had they licensed the film to someone else) because they can’t just value it at $0. Also, that $80 million isn’t coming just from Paramount+, it’s also coming from MGM+ (formerly Epix) because they have an output deal with Paramount that stems from Paramount’s former ownership stake in the network (which was modified so that Paramount could put their films on Paramount+ as well).

I think dnd was a well crafted movie but there’s something wrong with the structure somehow. I think it’s cuz those stole that invisibility necklace without showing a scene where the shop owner is an arse. They also cut down the heist portion. Honor amongst thieves had very little heist dna.

An anecdote about the D&D movie and John Wick 4: at my local theaters, both movies have only had two or three screenings per day even on their opening weekend. I wonder if this is an indicator that the theater owners were not very confident that the movies would sell tickets, or the studios lack the leverage of Disney to demand screenings, or maybe the theaters are just staffed? Regardless of the reason, the lack of showtimes made it very difficult for me to schedule time to see them. In fact, I still haven't seen either yet partly because of this (I'm seeing D&D tonight though, hopefully John Wick soon).

Dan Murrell is generally very conscientious of pronunciation. It is much appreciated! The Korean pronunciation of Paik as "Pike" is a bit irregular, commonly it is pronounced "Pack," but I think this one is pronounced "Peck." A documentary of Nam June Paik even if it Oscar Worthy probably wont be mentioned very often and Dan can be easily excused from speaking Korean fluently. I suspect Paramount is so hungry for a hit franchise (esp as M:I exits stage right) they might see DD:HAT as a “loss leader” even if it doesn’t turn profit. A growing fanbase on streaming might tell the tale.

As for any R rated movie, it doesn’t mean that much in the international market, different markets have very different ratings system and guide. And even when including domestic BO: They include Canada in domestic, it’s still a sizeable chunk of the overall domestic BO, and Canada itself have like 6-7 different ratings depending on the locations (provinces/territories) For exemple, i live in Quebec, and the vast majority of movies rated R in USA, are rated PG-13 here. Here is a non exhaustive list of movies rated PG-13 here - Every American pie - 21&22 jump street - Every John Wick - Both deadpool and Logan -Scream 4-5-6 - Str!ptease (yes that Demi more movie loll) - Django Unchained - every film in insidious franchise - Every Kevin Smith comedy (except Cop out who was simply PG lol ) -Most Judd Appatow and Paul Feige movies, others are PG And I could go on and on loll

@11:00 - I think this is very much above board if that much was actually transferred internally. People who are in charge of different divisions of a company need to be able to account for their success or failure in terms of costs or income. The streaming side has income and the movies it puts on there have a cost. The films have a cost and would license them out to other sources if the parent company hadn't kept it in house. Directors, actors, etc certainly are going to call all sorts of foul if the company said "sorry, there is no streaming licensing revenue to be able to pay you because we put it on our own streaming service instead of licensing it". And the streaming side needs to be able to show a real cost of the things it is airing vs its income so they can determine if the service is priced right and worth it.

I've been watching your content for years now and I had no idea that you were from Arkansas (or at least reside within Arkansas)! I'm not from Arkansas but I have lived here for almost 25 years so it's always cool to see representation. The craziest thing to me is that I've actually lived here long enough to remember when we had some really bad tornadoes tear up Markham st in Little Rock and this was very reminiscent of that. We unfortunately get bad weather like this every year but normally we see it hit in slightly more rural areas instead of the capital of the entire state that has the densest population. What's kind of crazy for me to consider in hindsight is that if I was still working at my previous job that I did before the pandemic I would've been smack dab in the middle of where the storms hit instead of now where I was way out in Prim doing deliveries and only realized how severe things were many hours later once I got off work and turned on the radio in my car on my way home.

To me, Paramound knew it was gonna loose money on the box Office in this movie. But that lost it is an investment on the launch of a franchise. The movie is really good, so, chances are people are going to find out about in stream and rental and enhanced the brand. So, a second movie will have more chance of making a profit in theaters, because it will take to the theaters the people who find out about the movie at home will go to see the sequel. It is what happen to John Wick. Also, because is a dnd movie, the revenue from merchandise has a lot more potential than most movies. I dont think they did a smart budget, they were seeing beyond the imediate profit. If they havend invest that much money, good chances the movie would end up a lot worst and therefore actually risk a franchise. is the same bet that sony did with into the spiderverse. A movie that probably just scrap by a profit in theaters, but that it was so well made and well receive that it launch a franchise even so. In fact, from a franchaise building perspective. I think that is better like it was, than if the movie had made 100 mi on the opening weekend but had gotten a C+ cinema score and a 30% on rotten tomatoes.

love your videos Dan! I'm nowhere near an expert when it comes to these things and I really love your weekly analysis as a casual movie enjoyer. I'd like to add that, regarding the DnD movie, there is some probably unquantifiable amount of sales from getting people into the game, that hasbro is probably banking on too. Even though I like seeing the numbers as a curiosity, what I'd hope is more folks will see the movie (in theaters or later on streaming) and get into the hobby themselves, not to make money for a company, but because I think TTRPGs are cool ^^

It seems like big second weekend drops are becoming the norm anymore. I wonder if it's becoming much more common for people to either see a movie opening weekend or waiting for it to come to streaming, but fewer people are either waiting for the second or third weekend to go to the theater or are going back multiple times. I really liked John Wick 4, but doubt I'll see it in the theaters again because it's so long and there are other movies I want to see. Same with D&D. I really liked it but probably won't go back. And I'm not really that interested in Scream 6 so I haven't seen it yet, but figured just to be completest I'll see it eventually so I should just see it in the theater, but just haven't found the time or motivation so it might wait until streaming. But it seems like even well received movies are having steeper than usual second weekend drops. But maybe that's just the impression I'm getting because of some of the high profile drops recently.
@Weaponator18
@Weaponator18 Жыл бұрын
I'm with you. I think giant drops from week one to week two for the vast majority of movies are going to be the norm. Audiences just have so many options now from the comfort of their own home too. A movie can still get people into the theater once. That said, a movie that's 'only' good; but not amazing, will have a shorter theatrical shelf life before coming out on streaming.

Streaming charts is probably my favorite part of the show. Can’t wait til it gets its own time to shine! Also I had to rewatch it twice. The Mandolorian not cracking top ten over those two weeks is a MASSIVE FAILURE for Disney. I’m guessing it may have only debuted during one of the weeks, but even if that’s the case, it could have gotten a bump from people catching up. An enormously budgeted streaming exclusive getting beat out by things like Bluey, South Park, and Greys Anatomy is terrible news for Disney. (For the record, this is far from an attempt to troll Disney. I live Disney and my profile pic is in Galaxy Edge in Walt Disney World.)

If I’m hearing right, Hasbro paid for half of Honor Among Thieves’ budget. If that’s the case, Paramount might walk away from this seeing it as a modest success. Probably the same people who watch The Condemned (2007) from a few weeks back or the Jason Statham movies War (2007), Homefront (2013) or Parker (2013), all of them appeared on the chart.

I went to see Dungeons and Dragons after watching your review and I had a really great time. I really don't want the movie to flop at the BO because it doesn't deserve that.

I have friends who grew up in the "Satanic Panic," and they are STILL wary of DnD even now. I've been trying to get them to give it a chance, but so far I have not been successful. I think this movie could improve their view of DnD, and I'm hoping to take them to see it, but we'll see if they back out last minute. 😅

Scream 6 is doing real great business, going over 100 million this week, and probably going to be the most succesful horror movie of the entire year.

Scream 6 is up to 153.3 million. Boxofficemojo is slow. So it took in like 11 million total worldwide this last weekend. Just saying. :)

Dan, I'm confused how you got the figure of $131,482,068 at 14:17 (4x int'l legs)... what number are you multiplying by 4 to get that? Shouldn't it be ~ $260,000,000?

4x opening weekend numbers - the movie opened around $32 million internationally
@michaelangelo2192

@@DanMurrellMovies Oh, it's just that on the same graphic, it says the international opening is $64,926,301? Not ~$32 mil? I assume that's just a small mistake then? Not trying to pick holes to be annoying, I just wanna make sure I'm understanding the numbers properly.
