I just want to give a shout out to whoever decided to translate m3gan to ミーガン. While it changes the pronunciation of the name from meh-gan to mii-gan the Japanese kanji for three is 三 which can be read as み/mi, which means they incorporated the 3 in m3gan into the name in Japanese.

Brad Pitt tends to be a much bigger draw internationally vs domestically, so it'll be interesting to see if that translates to an ensemble piece like "Babylon". Idea for a weird chart: the top 5 Brad Pitt movies with the largest disparity between their domestic and international box office grosses.

Gina Lollobrigida was the namesake of one of my favorite dogs. When I was in high school and college, we had a Newfoundland named Gina, who my dad named after Gina Lollobrigida (we also had a St. Bernard who he named Marcello after Marcello Mastroianni). Gina lived to be 10 years old, which is slightly on the older side for a Newfoundland, and was a wonderful part of our family. I'm impressed that her namesake managed to outlive her by over seven years.

Great show as always Dan, great breakdown on the profitability of a movie. You should considering doing a special on the greatest juggernaut of the entertainment industry this century, the most relevant and widespread on multiple platforms, of course I mean Cocomelon, that is about to reach 150 billion views on KZbin, and let's face it, KZbin its just as much a streaming service as the other ones, plus it's unending rule on kids Netflix makes Cocomelon probably one of the quietest industry phenomenons of all time, even though it's ever-present in ANY parents life.

House Party’s debut four million debut isn’t good; but it’s better than Babylon’s debut which was $3,603,368. Keep in mind that even if Disney only makes 100.00 profit on Avatar. That's on top of all the jobs and people it employed for years and years. A lot of people made a lot of money from the movie even if it only "profits" 15.00 at the end of the day. A lot of people forget that. This movie was a small company for years and years. People bought houses and put their kids through school.

We drove 1 hr to town 3 Sundays in a row, until there was a showing with good seats, that was not too full. At about the 2 hr 45 min mark (spoiler: where Jake fights the bad guy 1-on-1, starting the finale fights) the lady in front of me started playing videos on her phone. My left eye kept going to the light of her phone & it was hard to focus on the 3-d movie. At the credits I told my wife that I was going to beat on that lady's chair with my cane & scream Get Out, but she said that she had not noticed.

Glad you did the weekly cuts. I think people don't really get how much those are. I always thought that the domestic market opening weekends were significantly higher than that though (~70-80%). I know at one point, the reported numbers across the board were about 80% for the opening weekend, though the theaters may have pushed back as opening weekends got bigger and "legs" became less of factor.

Hey Dan, great show, I have been a fan of your channel since the beginning and respect your updates to make the show unique, all of which have been awesome. I have a question. Have you considered taking the difference between the 2 Avatar films to quantify the relative progress of each? I know you have done a ton of work to get the charts you do have, and it shows, but you can easily show the progress on the same chart that shows the individual progress. Is your data available in Google docs or other cloud service to share different ways to look at this data?

One thing I'm thinking about with Avatar 3, since it was filmed back to back with 2 was how much will 3 cost? WoW required creating some impressive new infrastructure, and how much new infrastructure was needed for 3? While WoW might have cost 400, filming 3 back to back might have brought 3's budget down. Unless Cameron went 'Colonel Kurtz' level insane developing even newer facilities for 3. I can say that I am already well ahead of movies viewed in a theater compared to last year. There seems to be way more films available that hit my interest. Last January I saw Licorice Pizza, the B&W version of Nightmare Alley, and a Fathom Event of Casablanca. Halfway through January, and I already got in M3agan, Puss & Boots, Corsage, Shin Ultra-Man (Fathom), and the original Friday the 13th (Regal did it for Jan 13th). I plan on getting in Plane, A Man Called Otto, and Infinity Pool for this month... so far.

If I'm right (and I'm really not sure anymore), Legs equals a film's box office take divisible by its opening weekend? E.g. if a movie opens to $200M and finishes at $800M, it "legged out" 4x from its OW?

Looking at the US only, Avatar 2 is on $572M, up $50M in the last week vs $75M the week before. If we assume it averages $25M for the 4 weeks until Quantumania and then gets wiped out it finishes around $675M around #8/Infinity War and 100 million behind the first one (unadjusted). Seems very unlikely it can make up that gap. Worldwide, Avatar 2 is at $1916M (latest from Mojo), up almost exactly $200M in the last week vs just over $300M the week before... If it averages $100M for 4 weeks it ends around $2.3B in a solid #3 spot on the all time list, half a billion off the first Avatar but pretty phenomenal. (And I loved your financial segment, and it is obviously making a killing in profit, but if it makes Pandora at disney parks double in revenue then that's hundreds of millions of dollars per year on top of it too, plus cost efficiencies in the sequels being made overlapping and guaranteed money helping shareholder confidence etc... Massive success all round, and we shouldn't really compare it to the unassailable original on any count imho)

I love the segment on breaking down a film's profitability. But it makes me wonder how profitable streaming projects are. Also, do the creators get a bonus if the project is considered successful? Like does Tim Burton get a lump sum for the episodes of Wednesday that he directed or does he also get some reward because the series brought in a ton of views? I suspect the streaming industry isn't that transparent yet but it makes me wonder 🤔.

These 2 movies are absolutely legendary in how much money they lost. And probably the biggest reason why Disney doesn't make new non franchise movies anymore.

Star Wars, Avatar and Marvel type movies are advertisements, commercials for toys, video games and merchandise. "According to Wikipedia, The Star Wars franchise is now worth an estimated $68.7 billion. Merchandise makes up $42.2 billion of that figure, with box office ticket sales making up only $10.316 billion of the total." Avatar doesn't have to make it huge in the theater, it's just a bonus on top of all that merch money.

James Cameron’s production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, is privately held and doesn’t belong to Disney, so I wonder who owns the Avatar IP. Isn’t Disney basically handling distribution by proxy through 20th Century Studios post acquisition? They pretty much had nothing to do with the making of this movie, so I wonder how the profit split actually works in this case.

Avatar IP is hold by Lightstorm. Disney I just distributing. Also Avatar 2 broke even Avatar 3 as well since they both were shot together. Dan consider Marketing budget which is never consider in break even. Avatar will probably end somewhere around 2.4 - 2.5 Billion. However Disney will divide the budget so at the end it will be 350M for Avatar 2 with break even be at 900 Million. This is a colossal success.

I would've gone to see House Party had the reviews not sucked. I knew it was bad news when Kid and Play didn't have a cameo.

Just before I clicked on this video I saw that House Party is available for $25 on Apple & Amazon in my country (g’day from Australia btw) with very little fanfare & almost zero advertising to speak of. Also, I saw A Man Called Otto the day before I went back to work last week, I was surprised by how many people filled up that theatre (half full), & as a 23 year old I wasn’t even the youngest person there, that was when I knew Otto would do well (& that’s just in Australia keep in mind)

Is that budget for the avatar based on current dollars or have they been inflated bc most of that movie was filmed years ago before the pandemic. And to be honest with you haven't seen much of a advertising for avatar. I feel like I say mor advertising for the first avatar than I have for the sequel.

The accountants wouldn't cry over a loss the sale/production team would. Accountants are like historians, they tell you what happened it is a sales/production teams that will take the hit for the failures.

I think a movie like Megan shows that when you actually make a good film pg-13 horror can be a great way to make money. Its crazy the percentage of pg-13 horror movies that aren't good.

@@DanMurrellMovies not an uncommon name here in Scotland, popstar Gerry Cinnamon for example. Most people don't go by their full names like that (like you also) so don't here the full version much, but it certainly wouldn't be Gerard like Americans say it, that pronunciation sounds French or Belgian or something.

Hello from Shanghai! We haven't actually had any Covid lockdowns here in China after everything opened up in early December, but the effect on the box office has been similar with hundreds of millions (including myself) catching Covid at the same time. But at least here in Shanghai the peak is gone, most people are done with their Covid and life is pretty back to much normal so I expect to see some big numbers from the CNY holiday.

Avatar 3 & part of Avatar 4 filming cost and also the P&A cost of $150M are included in the reported budget of $450M. As far as I know the budget of the Avatar sequel is $250M for the first copy and an additional $150M for P&A. Hence a total of $400M. Now when you consider the share percentage of Disney during the initial 2 weeks that is 80-90% depending on the quality of the screens and 70% on its 3rd week the actual profit becomes over $500M for Disney till now. And now you have the long-term streaming revenue, the merchandise revenue, as well as the Park revenue. Disney will make a lot of money with this one! And Avatar 3 most probably will become a Record Breaker provided there won't be any resurfacing of the Pandemic or an all out war!
