Yeah I was expecting that too but i was pleasantly surprised they did that, I'm glad they let a main character admit to being a killer, almost kill again if he wasn't stopped and then say that he would kill someone else again. Like we know many of MCUs hero's have killed people before but they usually never really bring it up and dance around it but they straight up allowed him to be flawed and I think it made him a better character just by that.

fun fact: for Meng'er Zhang, the actress who played Shang's sister, this was her first ever mainstream movie. She was a theatre actress and she went through martial arts training for this movie. She met and fell in love with Yung Lee, an action designer who worked in the movie. Simu and the rest of the cast actually organised a surprise wedding reception for them in disneyland. Also, god damn, Tony fucking Leung. The guy can speak with his eyes. The actress who played Shang's mother, Fala Chen , was kinda crushing hard on him and her husband even made fun of her on twitter saying that "gosh i wished someone looked at me the same way my wife looked at Tony Leung"

I love how at the end, when Shang-Chi finally reconciles both parts of who he is (the gentleness and nurturing of his mother, the harshness and destructiveness of his father), and uses the Ten Rings to defeat the Dweller in Darkness, both his mother’s and father’s musical themes literally come in together to make his final theme. Also, the mirroring of Wenwu vs Leiko in the beginning and him vs Shang-Chi, in order to have Wenwu realize it is his son who carries on his wife’s spirit, not what he was looking for, is just brilliant. Part one of their showdown really set up their final battle to have an exquisite RETURN OF THE JEDI feel to it. Father and son, coiled with emotion. And, as every good action director knows, the physical fight was orchestrated to the beat of that emotional struggle. Honestly, it was a cut above many MCU films in terms of (non-dragon) combat. 14:05 Not only did you recognize an Extremis soldier. But the fighter going against him is also another cool easter egg. The fighter that Ronny Chien's character praises "Nice one Helen!" is actually a Black Widow that Nat and Yelena freed from the Red Room. Look carefully and you can see that her dark outfit and her belt has the Black Widow emblem from the Red Room. Yup, that is a Widow, you can actually see her in the locker room scene afterwards before Shang Chi is told to remove his shirt; right when Wong leads Abomination through the sling ring portal and the two of them aren't fighting but relaxing between fights at 15:05 (but that wasn't in this reaction. It's at this scene you can see the two of them again not fighting after Wong and Abomination leave through the portal) . Even better icing on the cake, but if you go back and watch the scene where Nat takes on the rest of the Widows as the Red Room is being taken down, you can see "Helen" in the crowd of widows getting ready to swarm Nat. Same actress and same character credited in that movie and in Shang Chi. ;)

Find actors like Simu Liu to do those kind of movies with respect to Jackie and his style. Unfortunately Jackie himself became a little too old and his movies nowadays are too campy for my taste, but I'm sure there are a lot of fans of him in the movie industrie now or people who worked with him like Brad Allan who could recreate that kind of films and the mix of comedy and great fighting.

Awkwafina was honestly such a breath of fresh air in this film. Yes she has kinda one go to comedic performance but its how its utilized that makes the difference and we dont usually get the kinda comedy she offers in a MCU film so it felt very entertaining. It also helps that she ended up being a contributing character as well instead of just a supporting one. . She has excellent coordination and reflexes, she just uses them for driving for fun. But if she actually puts herself to learning, she can pick up skills that make use of those talents. Like archery. It was a tad rushed, but not unbelievable. It mostly made sense that she was good with a bow, and she came through in the clutch.

About the shrine honoring passed-on loved ones, it's a largely Buddhist tradition though I do know some non-Buddhist Asians who do it too. It's a similar idea to the ofrenda in Coco and Mexican culture. Each household will have a dedicated shrine to dead loved ones and you typically would have a bowl of uncooked rice to put incense in when you pray to them. You make offerings of their favorite foods on the anniversaries of their death and lunar new year. Shrines of a certain person also don't have to be limited to one single place either. All of my aunts and uncles have a shrine dedicated to my great grandma and my aunt. And there will also typically be a shrine wherever their ashes lie. One thing I love about Buddhist temples is that you can put your loved ones' picture on the wall there and the monks will tend to it. That way, even after your entire family is gone, there will still be someone left praying for them. It's humbling to go to a temple shrine room and see hundreds of pictures of people long passed away. My aunt actually passed away right before this movie came out and I watched it with my cousins and my uncle. The funeral was still fresh in my mind and going in we had no clue what the plot was. Even though it was very emotional for my family and I to watch, it was still comforting to see Shang and his sister mourning their mother in the same way.

The cinematography, the fight scenes(best in the MCU bar none), the OST(Shang Chi’s theme is a banger of a track), the acting(especially of Tony Leung’s Wenwu), and what it sets up(really interested in what Xu Xialing does with the Ten Rings organization), and possibly connections to other MCU stuff(were the rings themselves created by the Eternal Phastos?) It's up there as far as best Marvel origin movies, everything for the most part from the acting, the writing, the direction, the cinematography, the fight choreography just all of it was done beautifully, loved it. It borrowed from so many aspects of Asian culture and film, I'm not Asian but I love the culture and films from old school Jackie Chan movies to the IP Man and Raid movies. I think one thing that keeps it from being one of the best superhero origin movies ever is that last 10 or 15 minutes with the Dweller-in-Darkness fight. Don't get me wrong it looked great, it showed how prowerful Shang Chi and the ten rings actually can be, and I get a lot of Asian culture is the fantastical elements like dragons and stuff like that but I think for the grand story they were telling with him versus his father it was not needed. I think it had this intimate story and just took it over the top, did too much and felt rushed. I think it would've been much better if all that got it's own movie with them taking on the Dweller-in-Darkness and his minions in the sequel.

This movie was way more connected to the greater MCU than I thought. Outside the obvious crossovers, the bus passenger streaming the bus fight was previously seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming as the vendor who asks Spidey to do a flip. Also, in the fight club, the person the Extremis enhanced was fighting was a Black Widow from that movie. I thought the Captain Marvel cameo was a nice nod to the behind-the-scenes humble beginnings of the director having previously directed her in some indie films. Really looking forward to seeing how this corner of the MCU develops and interacts with other corners going forward.

4:20 The people who did this movie need to assist or help with future live action Avatar: last airbender movies or films. Notice that Wenwu's form is Hung Gar Kung Fu. Which is the style inspired for Earthbending. And yes, Yiling's "airbending" technique is a mix of Tai Chi and Ba Gua Zhang. Tai Chi was the inspiration for Water Bending and Ba Gua Zhang is for Air Bending. And my favorite part is that after she's done messing with him, she actually shows him an extra form of mercy. At 5:45 after she discombobulates him and sends him flying, she actually sees he's about to fall and hit the ground. But she redirects the wind and sends him into the pond as a "Go soak your head" conclusion to their first meeting. Despite him trying to wage a challenge, she still showed a bit of compassion when defeating him.

Also, I love all the little details, too; like how the Great Protector is an eastern style dragon, while the evil Soul Eater is basically a western style dragon. (DRAGON FIGHT! DRAGON FIGHT! 😀) Or the fact that all the supernatural creatures are based on real-life Chinese lore, with Morris being a Hundun aka a Dijiang, a divine spirit creature of chaos and vice which is often easily confused (which fits PERFECTLY as a companion to Trevor!).

One of the Top 5 MCU films for me. Gorgeous cinematography, great music, and the absolute best choreography in an MCU film yet. One of the best things about this film (and this is for every standout MCU film in my opinion) is Tony Leung as Wenwu. One of the things "standout" films have within in the MCU is a fantastically written villain. Yes, Wenwu is the "bad guy" but you understand why he does what he does. He's conflicted and he does genuinely love his family, but it is that love and ultimately need for vengeance that drives him to do the bad things he does. Then to cap things off, he has an excellent redeeming arc. Something that not a lot of films can pull off well, but this one does it in spades.

Oh damn. That's a great reference. "He's Iroh at Ba Sing Se" That makes it hit pretty hard. Except without the redemption arc of finding the white lotus Wen Wu just deteriorates.

I really liked Trevor in Iron Man 3, which is a film I immensely enjoy. So I was really happy to see him pop up in this film. His inspiration for acting is probably my favorite joke in the Marvel movies. It's funny, sad, and genuinely inspirational.

Know that I think of it, most of the movies from this phase were dealing about family drama, from Wanda to this to the Eternals has always been about family. Even Loki (to some extend) has found “family” in Silvie. Hope Marvel keeps experimenting and produced more things like Shang-Chi and Eternals! They’ve established the franchise enough and now it’s time to diversify the line up (and story)!

happy to hear the enthusiasm from eric about the action cinematography, definitely the best aspect of this film, to a point that I thought the big CG dragon fight at the end was underwhelming compared to it. also, didn't appreciate enough on my first viewing the difference of how shang-chi and his father used the rings in their fighting styles. I really like that touch.

Glad y'all loved this movie as much as i did! I'm more of a casual fan of marvel movies but I've seen basically every one and, just like y'all, as soon as the movie finished i just sat there and realized "wow, that's my favorite marvel movie." I've never had that happen before - this movie is just SO good and i wish i had more people to talk about it with

I just watched _Shang-Chi_ yesterday on Disney+ during my Dad's birthday and on Disney+ Day. By far easily one of my favorite MCU films so far from its diverse cast (Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, etc.), fight choreography, visuals and engaging storyline, that makes me look forward to what to expect in Phase 4 of the MCU. Awkwafina as Katy was by far my favorite character in the film, next to Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery (+ Morris) and If I had a celebrity friend that I would like to hang out with especially during Karaoke night, it's without a doubt Awkwafina. Lastly since Aaron mentioned _Raya and the Last Dragon,_ due to Awkwafina appearing in that film you should react to the film whenever you guys have the chance (regardless if the ONLY Disney content you react to are related to Marvel and Star Wars).

A thing I randomly remembered, while watching this movie in the cinema, was that Trevor was in a tv pilot where his costar was an alcoholic monkey and when I was watching this I realized a) Trevor has a fascination with monkeys (and where it came from) and b) That's probably a big reason he took that job XD
