Lion Turtles statues that Aang collided with in the Intro...

"The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can touch the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginningless time, darkness thrives in the void, but always yields to purifying light." This is one of the most powerful thoughts the show can teach those watching it, imo. A lot of people claim the Lion Turtle was a way for Aang to easily get out of what he needed or what he had to do, in a very utilitarian or pessimistic way, and I can understand where that's coming from, especially given the nature of Ozai's life and crimes. I personally believe in the Death Penalty but that's not the issue here, Aang does not. It conflicts with everything that he personally believes and if he yields his own philosophy for convenience, even to save the world, then he will do it again for just the same convenience. When everyone was telling him that killing Ozai was his only choice, even other Air Benders, there was still a voice at the back of his head niggling at him that he had no other choice. Yes, he was the Avatar with a duty to the world but there is a more important aspect to his role, for he was the only connection between the material and spiritual worlds. And as we have seen, those who do not have balance in them cannot access the Spirit World as Iroh did. Those without limits or rules or philosophy cannot achieve enlightenment, and that is what Aang needed to achive above all else. The Lion Turtle is the closest thing to God Aang will ever see, and what does he tell him? "Darkness thrives *but yields to purifying light."* In other words, no matter what people try to tell you in order to make you change or adapt, you need to stick with what you know to be right. You didn't come to that philosophy by accident, it is a part of you and to surrender it for convenience would be to give up on yourself and your own beliefs that you once held. The whole point of this is that sticking by what you know and believe to be right and true will give you greater understanding and spiritual comfort than simply acquiescing to whatever is demanded of you. Because how can the Avatar be the mediator between the worlds if he gives up his connection to the spirit world in order to serve the moral world alone? EDIT: I also love the detail that when talking to Yang Chen, Aang perks up about his vegetarianism when he was previously reserved with the other Avatars, because he thought she would tell him what he was thinking was right. He wasn't going to them for advice, as he should have done, he wanted someone to give him confirmation bias about his beliefs, because no one else would.
@solodolosolomon5 жыл бұрын
"Those who do not have balance in them cannot access the spirit world" Or aang could have grown up and realized that what he did was necessary. Sure, he would be off balanced for a time, due to going against his philosophy, but i see mo reason why he cant gain balance once more. Thats what growing up is. Having your views and lifestyle challenged and adapting where you must.

@solodolosolomon "Or aang could have grown up and realized that what he did was necessary." But it wasn't, as he proved by the end. "Sure, he would be off balanced for a time, due to going against his philosophy, but i see mo reason why he cant gain balance once more" Because once you've crossed a line, you can't uncross it. He would have had to take a life. That's not something that can be dismissed or brushed aside as if it were nothing. It would have been a violation of all that he holds sacred. You can't come back from that ss if it's nothing. "Thats what growing up is. Having your views and lifestyle challenged and adapting where you must." But he was challenged, as the Lion Turtle said. His true mind weathered lies and illusions, his heart touched the poison and the darkness yielded to purifying light. You can't act as of Aang didn't consider killing Ozai as he came dangerously close to it under Yang Shen's influence because she was the only one who could get through to him, but he didn't find the arguments convincing enough to go through with it until her. You say this would have been him adapting. I say it would have been Aang turning into someone he wasn't and sacrificing his own beliefs and identity for no damn reason.
@jossgoyanko70065 жыл бұрын
@@solodolosolomon You call it adapting... But perhaps a better word would be surrendering. All of the previous Avatars Aang spoke too we're adults. They confronted the world's challenges and ultimately compromised their values in order to get results. But the reason Aang discovers energy bending, the reason he could do what no other Avatar could do, was *because* he was a child, *because* he had conviction, *because* his spirit was unbendable. When there was no other way, he found a way, because he had the kind of moral integrity most others mistake for naivety.

Zuko's reunion with Iroh still makes me tear up all these fucking years later. Because anyone would have the right to be angry in Iroh's position but the thought never even occurred to him. He was just sad and disappointed that Zuko had renounced all that he had tried to teach him, and his own way as a result. He was the only person that continually stuck around for him and never gave up on him, even when it would have been perfectly valid for him to do so, because he was the only real Father that Zuko never had. It's the tragedy under pinning the purity of their relationship. Zuko could only become this close to him because his own father was an abusive Tyrant and Iroh could only afford to care this much about Zuko because Lu Ten, his own son, was dead. They came from a violent, abusive country and only together could they mold it into something better. But before that, they had to be broken themselves.

A lion turtle appeared in the beginning of the unaired pilot as a statue behind Aang. The lion turtle who imparted Aang with energybending had forehead markings similar to those seen on fire lion turtles. Some critics claim that the lion turtle teaching Aang energybending to defeat Ozai without killing him was a deus ex machina, a device used by writers to resolve a conflict through some form of divine intervention. The creators refute this claim and insist that the lion turtle's abilities were already developed prior to its introduction.

Old Masters of the White Lotus and Old Masters of the past with the past Avatars! The Iroh/Zuko reunion really hits me in the feels! Here's Zuko probably expecting hate and no forgiveness like how Ozai treated him, but instead he got a hug and forgiveness! Iroh being a true father to Zuko than Ozai ever was. Loved Yangchen's moment with Aang as she basically lays out reality for him. She understands where Aang's coming from, but she also understands the duties and responsibilities that comes with being the Avatar. That at times, you will have to put your feelings and morals aside for the world. It was a somber moment, especially for a kid's show. Now, the rest is up to Aang, but one thing is for sure, he will have to face his destiny as Iroh said.

This is my favorite episode of the last four. But the next two are also phenomenal. I think the Lion Turtle was the perfect ending for Aang, exactly what he needed to hear to know exactly what he needed to do. It's so important and meaningful, and was really what I needed to hear when I was first watching the show.

The lion turtle fits within the theme of a World Turtle, which is particularly evident in Chinese and indigenous American mythology and culture. It also bears a resemblance to the Zaratan, grandiose sea turtles found in literature and folklore, whose shells are easily mistaken for small islands. The lion turtle resembles Chinese mythological turtles, a few of which are placed around the Forbidden Palace in Beijing.
@Kidapollo925 жыл бұрын
A very high level of detail went into the lion turtle's design in early production of the first series, but it wasn't rendered as intricately in the final animation. The lion turtle is the only creature and character to be painted, as opposed to drawn as a cartoon. The chanting heard when the lion turtle called to Aang is a Buddhist chant known as "Na Mo A Mi Tuo Fo Shin Di". This chanting was first heard when the Fire Sages assumed their stances in front of the door to the Fire Temple sanctuary. It was heard again right before Aang stepped into the Spirit Oasis to fuse with La during the Siege of the North. Nyla was unable to follow Aang's scent while he was on the lion turtle, as it had traveled extensively throughout the world. Because of this, the lion turtle accumulated countless smells which made it impossible to differentiate between distinct scents, effectively masking Aang. The lion turtle is the only known non-spirit creature that is able to communicate with words, albeit telepathically. Lion turtles have great cultural importance in the Avatar World and are referenced several times throughout the franchise. General Fong and General Sung both had pauldrons representing the head of a lion turtle, as did one of Aang's battle "options". A painting of a lion turtle was depicted in a scroll inside Wan Shi Tong's Library. Aang and Sokka hid behind a lion turtle statue outside the Earth Kingdom Royal Palace while devising a plan to meet Earth King Kuei. Piandao compared Sokka's courage and heart to those of a lion turtle. Additionally, his manor boasted many lion turtle furnishings. Admiral Chan's home in Ember Island had a lion turtle door knocker. The gates of the Southern Water Tribe compound have a lion turtle motif.

June refers to Katara as Zuko's girlfriend in "Bato of the Water Tribe" as well as this episode. This is the second of only two episodes where tears have been seen flowing out of Zuko's scarred left eye. The other episode is "Bitter Work". This is the first episode in which Iroh's topknot is seen since "The Avatar State". This is the second episode in which Zuko uses Iroh's sandal to locate him. In "Winter Solstice, Part 1: The Spirit World", Zuko finds his sandal in the middle of the road, indicating that he is on the right path. In this episode, he uses the scent of Iroh's sandal to guide Nyla to his location. This episode and the next episode are the only two in the series when there is no official Fire Lord present at the time. Despite Aang's previous encounters with both Avatar Kuruk and Avatar Yangchen in the Spirit World, the two Avatars introduced themselves to Aang due to the fact that, at the end of Aang's journey, Yangchen told him that his encounters would be a forgotten dream. This is the second episode in which Avatar Kuruk and Avatar Yangchen appear and the first time their voices are heard. They first appeared as miscellaneous Avatars in "The Avatar State" and were properly introduced in the online game, "Escape from the Spirit World". Avatar Kuruk mentions that he lost his love to Koh the Face Stealer. Aang met this spirit in "The Siege of the North, Part 2". Avatar Kuruk's advice to Aang recapitulates his story from "Escape from the Spirit World". The four "Old Masters" were each referred to in the title of the episode they were introduced: "The King of Omashu" (Bumi), "The Deserter" (Jeong Jeong), "The Waterbending Master" (Pakku), and "Sokka's Master" (Piandao). The episode's title is a reference to the Order of the White Lotus which consists of old masters, as well as the past Avatars who advised Aang and to the lion turtle, who is the oldest master of all. In this episode, Aang contacts Avatar Roku for the last time in the series.

You could tell that Aang was looking for an Avatar to tell him what he _wanted_ to hear. But they were all telling him what he _needed_ to hear. Yangchen is from the same culture ae Aang, and he was hoping she would back him up. But even she said that what he wants is not the same as what the world needs. Even one of the monks from season 1 in abflashback said that what's best for Aang isn't necessarily what's best for the world because his duty goes beyond any one culture or any one person's feelings.

You guys have to take a close look to the phrasing of the turtle. it gives hints: The true mind can cast away illusions. The true heart can take away the poison that is hatred without being harmed (itself). Darkness is always present in the void (chaos) but it needs to purify light. The classic balance between light and darkness and good and evil mumbo jumbo. Like in many tales, comics used you can take from it that even for the sake of goodness and justice, when using certain powers one must remain pure him/herself at heart and mind, otherwise it might backfire and harm the caster. The lion turtle clearly looking like an ancient spirit, probably well before the avatars, bestows Aang a special kinda light or energy.

This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. The scenes featuring Aang are very similar to the classic Hindu text Bhagavad Gita. In the dialogue, prince Arjuna prepares to engage in a major battle when he realizes that the opposing army is populated by many of his friends and relatives, and thus becomes conflicted about fighting, despite being aware of their evil. In order to convince Arjuna of the importance of taking part in battle, Lord Krishna, avatar of the god Vishnu, appears in the form of his charioteer and counsels the prince about his duties as a member of the warrior caste and as someone tasked with following the righteous path. The arguments that Krishna gives in favor of participating in the battle are very similar to the arguments that the Avatars give to Aang, like Kuruk's advice on the consequences of inaction and Kyoshi's alluding to a greater good that would outweigh the evil of taking life. Generally, when Ozai makes an appearance, so does Azula, though this is the only episode in which he appears, and she does not. When Zuko and the gang are conferring with the Order of the White Lotus at the campsite, he refers to his father as "Father Lord" instead of "Fire Lord". Toph even points out his mistake, but he does not acknowledge it. This verbal mistake is an actual psychological phenomenon called "Freudian slip", which is thought to reveal unconscious conflicts or issues of varied natures. Zuko and Iroh's reunion is very similar to the parable of the Prodigal Son. A young man leaves his father and brother to pursue friendships with sinful people, similar to how Zuko betrays Iroh for Ozai and Azula, ironically, Zuko's immediate family. After all the son goes through, he soon learns he can go back to his father. When he returns, he expects his father to severely reprimand him, only for the father to instantly welcome him back with open arms. This is the second time in the four part special that someone points out other issues when Aang should be the main focus, the first time being when Sokka points out Zuko destroying his sand sculpture before he points out Zuko attacking Aang. Bumi realizes Momo is missing, and has to be told that Aang is gone as well. This comedy device is sometimes referred to as Burying the Lead. This is the first and only episode in the series in which Iroh calls Aang by his name and not by "the Avatar". The titular "Sozin's Comet" first appears at the end of this episode. The comet travels against the earth's rotation, traveling from east to west. That is why light from the comet was able to appear behind Aang's head in this episode, and why it is seen leaving in "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang" across the sea opposite the direction from which Phoenix King Ozai's airship fleet came. The place where Nyla leads the team to is very similar to the part of the Outer Wall that Iroh broke through during his 600-day siege of Ba Sing Se. The order in which Aang speaks with his previous incarnations, Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, and Yangchen, represents the Avatar Cycle in reverse: fire, earth, water, and air. It was revealed in Avatar Extras that the writers wanted Momo with Aang on the lion turtle so Aang could talk to someone. This is Avatar Roku's last speaking role in the series.
