One detail at the Zuko-Ozai confrontation. Zuko could have literally killed Ozai there, by redirecting the lightning straight to him. Ozai had no knowledge of this technique, it was invented from Iroh! Zuko just targeted lower, to the floor in front Ozai, so that the bolt hit would not be lethal but enough to give him time to escape. When he said that it was the Avatar's destiny to stop Ozai, he meant it.
@IamnotJohnFord3 жыл бұрын
I think there are reasons he didn't kill Ozai. He doesn't want to be the one to kill his own father. This is his first time redirecting lightning. Maybe, he simply missed. One of my favourite things about the show (of which there are so... so... so damn many) is the way Ozai is built up as a threat - voice and silhouette only at first, a towering shadow. The most we see of him is the back of his head, the displeased curl of his lips. We don't even directly see his face until season 3, if I remember correctly, and he never fails to dominate every scene he's in. For so long, we come to know him through the way he has shaped characters (Zuko, Azula) and the world. Then we meet him and suddenly it makes sense why Azula is the way she is. Ozai, who has even more deadly firebending, even more cunning manipulation. Who has made her this way. Azula's treatment of Zuko suddenly pales in comparison to the clear vicious contempt we see from Ozai. Not only does it make him utterly terrifying - our fear of him making it that much easier to relate to Aang and Zuko's fear of him - but it also parallels the development of Zuko's relationship with his father and the way he sees his father. There's something very fitting about the fact that when *we* see Ozai clearly, it is also the time Zuko, for the first time in his life, comes to see his father clearly for who and what he is.
@theunderdog93533 жыл бұрын
@@Hekateras Just one correction; Ozai is more powerful than Azula. The writers even confirmed that by saying Ozai is the most powerful firebender alive in ATLA. Azula is crazy powerful and definitely #2 but Ozai is the clear dominator here. I can't go into detail without spoiling but it's a fact that the writers have confirmed he's more powerful than Azula

@@theunderdog9353 I just realised my phrasing was ambiguous, but by "Then we meet him and suddenly it makes sense why Azula is the way she is. Omg YES! AZULA IS SUCH A JOY TO WATCH! She's perfect and calculated! A true prodigy just like Katara! Such an amazing antagonist
@brunopizarro37003 жыл бұрын
Azula knew about the plan because she heard it from the Earth King when she got to Ba Sin Se, remember? She knew they were planning an invasion and even knew the exact day that the eclipse would occure. And because she had a suspicion that Aang was still alive, she thought that they would still try to attack them on that day. She is so powerful and smart. She's a really good villain. The kind of villain you want.

Christ the scene with Zuko and Ozai is fucking brilliant. Both actors were fantastic.
@papl203 жыл бұрын
That Zuko and Ozai scene was so damn powerful. They really went there, they really addressed childhood abuse and overcoming trauma, they also show us how even after what happened to Zuko and what he did he was willing to admit his mistakes and accept that he really was loved and helped, and that no matter what he was willing to correct his wrongs. It also broke me that they left the older people behind, they lose everyone but the youngest and now they're the ones who have to fight and end the war...and if that ain't the most tragic thing I don't know what is
@Hekateras3 жыл бұрын
Another "place" they also went: "They hate us, and we deserve it." That last part is so, so important. Zuko accepts responsibility for the suffering caused by the Fire Nation and doesn't try to minimise it or make excuses. He clearly loves his people (what they *could* be). It takes a lot of courage to admit that they need redemption as well.

@@Hekateras That exact part flies right over a lot of Americans' heads.
@Hekateras3 жыл бұрын
@@magtovi Not just Americans. The world as we know it is shaped by imperialism, past and present. US imperialism, British imperialism, French and Spanish colonialism, Japanese and Chinese imperialism all just in recent memory. Though yes, American exceptionalism is certainly worth commenting on in this context purely because no other country in the world currently has a military quite that absurdly large, or military fingers in so many proverbial pies all around the world. So much of what is said about the Fire Nation (largest military, greatest technological advancement in the military, conquering and controlling other nations in order to "share their greatness" and spread their obviously superior lifestyle and culture could be applied to the modern US right now. My home country's democratic election less than ten years ago was overthrown with a US-instigated coup - all for the sake of weakening Russia and strengthening US positions close to Russia - and that country has been rolling down a hill into (even further) nationalism and fascism ever since. I can never go home again, in a sense, because I no longer recognise what's left of it. So it's hard for me not to hate the US as an institution, even as I recognise that individual Americans just going about their lives can't really help what they've been brought up to think and believe. It's like the AtLA episode where Aang discovers that generations upon generations of Fire Nation children have simply been brought up to think the Air Nomads had a completely different way of life, had a *military*, as a way of erasing the genocide. These kids don't know better. The teacher doesn't know better. And that's just one falsehood out of many. How do you even begin untangling a web of lies that goes so deep? That an entire way of life is based on, that is used to justify endless wars and invasions? That the system will fight tooth and nail to protect, because otherwise it will crumble? I wish there were another post-AtLA show that tackles some of these issues or the comics went into it at all. Alas.
@magtovi3 жыл бұрын
@@Hekateras Honestly this is the first time I've seen an American production address this issue so accurately in relation to the way the U.S. has managed itself the last 150 years. The fact that too many countries were living their life normally (or at least trying to) "until the Fire Nation attacked", in the last century. The fact that their official discourse is that they want to "share their greatness" when in reality all they do is plunder. The fact that they think that everyone else admires and respects them, when in reality all of those nations fear them and hate them for their crimes. And the most important one maybe is the fact their people is completely oblivious to all of this. The level of manipulation the U.S. government has over its people is flabbergasting. Anyway, this is one of the best shows ever.

It’s good Zuko didn’t kills his father or that Airo didn’t try to kill him - cause for the world it would all look like a fight between the family and it wouldn’t really have the outcome it would if the Avatar does it. People ask why Zuko didn't just attack his father when he had the upper hand. I think there are a few reasons that make sense. Zuko is leaving the fire nation to help the Avatar. That's not the same as fighting his father directly. Zuko is still his father's son. Attacking his own father and running him thru with his swords is probably still too much for him to try. If he kills his father he is lost. If he hesitates at the wrong moment, his father will definitely kill him without remorse. Also, the fire lord isn't an idiot. Rest assured he had some other non-fire related defenses at the ready if Zuko indeed attacked. Notice how he never strayed from from his throne. Powerless is not helplessness.

This is even worse when you realise ozai just admitted to his son that he was prepared to kill him, and also whilst he was a very young child. The only reason he didn't was because his mother offered to kill ozais father to make ozai the firelord. If it wasn't for ursa, ozai would have murdered his own son. 🥺

Not enough people talk about the fact that Zuko had his father dead-to-rights in their confrontation. Ozai had never seen or heard of lightning redirection before. It's a water-bender methodology employed on a fire bending technique. The mere fact that he was knocked on his ass from a proximity detonation means he had NO counterplay if Zuko just aimed that lightning center-mass. If Zuko wanted to, Ozai would have died on the spot, from his own redirected lightning.

Azula knew about the day of black invasion because she infiltrated the Earth Kingdom posing as the Kyoshi warriors and the Earth King told her - otherwise the fire nation would not be prepared and the invasion plan would have worked.
@IamnotJohnFord3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the fire nation knew of the eclipse and the invasion plan. And, Aang and the crew knew about their knowledge. But, they had no way to know Azula would be there. They also had no idea she would be so elusive. They also didn't know that she would be the Dai LI to protect her. They made all the difference. Aang, with the help of Toph, had time to seek out the fire lord and attack him while he was powerless. Azula is always two steps ahead of everyone. I still am in awe that this is a kid's show. So many layers. My daughter and I watched this when she was maybe 4 years old. She liked the powers. 6 years later she has watched it again. Now, now we can talk about how sad, joyful, deep, well thought out, etc.. this series really is.
