As for Aang's dilemma, I'm just going to quote a classic (that was recently quoted in another movie): "There's no living with, with a killing. There's no going back from it. Right or wrong, it's a brand, a brand that sticks." It's true here as much as anywhere. And Aang is twelve. I don't see anything strange with him desperately wanting to find another way.
@tonydanatop49125 жыл бұрын
yeah but the problem is its implied that he killed before ( they died off screen obviously) thats what always irked me the whole no killing policy seemed to come out of nowhere and if you rewind to the end of season one im pretty sure of the majority of nameless fire nation grunts werent going home again
@ofcrgry5 жыл бұрын
Tony Danatop You forget that Aang was involuntarily in the avatar state at the time - he made no conscious decision to kill, only the spirits he served as a vessel for did.

It has nothing to do with redemption, Aang even says that the world would be better of without him, it is about a moral principle. Some people call Ozai underdeveloped, but I think making him undeniably evil really serves the thematic conflict. If he was some charismatic, well-intentioned extremist it would be to easy to side with Aang.
@lahunica27267 жыл бұрын
He's indeed charismatic, the only thing I regret about the show is that Ozai didn't get as much screentime as he should have, at least a flashback episode of him and Iroh.
@mitchhamilton647 жыл бұрын
meh, i dont mind villains not getting more screentime. ozai is just inheriting the goals of his father and grandfather with the same drive as them. his motivations are clear and theres no tragic backstory, no "its for the greater good" bs that comes with most villains. hes just a bad guy, same as azula, doing the wishes to make their family proud.
@maxmustermann90587 жыл бұрын
Nah, I would argue that Sozin had more noble intentions and Azulon at least did not want to destroy the entire world and he seems to have genuienly loved Iroh, at least. We can see the firelords becoming progressively worse, culminating in Azuala being barely able to function, when she is Firelord. (also destroying the Earth Kingdom was her idea) I think that is neat, but they do not all have the same motivations or personalities and I do not think Ozai was meant to be seen as charismatic, by the viewers.
@4Tom4lepus47 жыл бұрын
I think Azula is much more than a standard bad guy, and I think we don't need much screentime for Ozai because we basically see what kind of person he is in his children
@cameronjosephvideos59425 жыл бұрын
Right, making Ozai completely unsympathetic and irredeemable really serves Aang's conflict well. In this case everyone would say that Aang is completely justified in killing him. There is no small chance that Ozai will change and we know he's too powerful to lock up. It makes the dilemma that much more troublesome.

Zuko's journey at the beginning of B3 parallels the Aang journey right now. Someone else put on Aang the duty of killing the firelord (technically, Roku asked A KID to do what he could never do himself). Yet, it's not HIS destiny, it's not who he is. And Zuko found himself in rage against himself and what he believed to be right, he discovered himself being torn up by everything he's done to get on "the right path" (dictated by someone else). Aang's journey is the exact same thing, how do you bring balance around you if you're not in balance with what you do?

Those that say Zutara is impossible should look at the scene where Zuko fights Aang in this because when he first joined the gang katara threatens to end his life if he even gives the slightest impression he will cause Aang harm BUT after Zuko does go into full on attack mode in this episode she doesn't hurt Zuko at all not even a little AND she forgave him very quickly. She clearly had a HUGE change of heart toward him from when he first joined the gang. I think people that can still say Zutara is an impossibility after this are likely in denial thb.

@SunburnCity4 жыл бұрын
I think this finale is where the blindwave crews' perspective and line of thought clash most with ATLA itself. You can see it in there discussions, especially when they get to discussing Aang's dilemma. The reality is that Aang is a monk, and has extremely deepset beliefs about himself and the world around him. Of his philosophy and peoples culture, he is the LAST. No more air nomads, and so he is desperately trying to preserve the last (and arguably Core aspect) of his people and their culture/philosophies: *All life is Sacred* But there can be no future without the defeat of the firelord, and so we have a dilemma. There are some fantastic youtubers that have broken down this topic far better than I have illustrated above.
@ethanquirk283 жыл бұрын
I think the issue is exacerbated even more by the fact he’s not just a monk, but the *last* monk. He is the last pillar through which all of his people’s beliefs and practices survives. If he goes against these beliefs then thats the point where his people’s culture truly dies. He has the weight of the entirety of the Air Nomad’s traditions on his back alone. Even in the next episode where Yang Chen says that selfless duty compels Aang to sacrifice his own spiritual needs, I feel like that answer wasn’t a help to him precisely because his stance was coming from a form of selfless duty to his people instead of a desire to fulfil his own spiritual needs. This is why despite the fact it was the first definitive answer he got from the other Avatars, it didn’t help him
@SunburnCity3 жыл бұрын
@@ethanquirk28 Yes exactly. Yang Chen delivered the cold reality as she and the other avatar incarnations viewed the dilemma. This isn't a satisfactory answer for Aang, and thematically it clashes with the message presented in the story. But it does fit with the BlindWave crews thought process, because they are only looking at this as spectacle.

If he goes against his morals and decides to kill the Fire Lord, he won't be betraying just himself but all of the Air Nation! For these reasons, it is such a difficult decision for the 12/13 year old boy (+100 years but he was frozen...). As the Avatar, he must bring balance to the world, so he also has the responsibility of keeping the teachings of the Air Nation alive

Taminator38: The responsibility of the Avatar is to do what's best for the world. The previous Air Nation Avatar (Yangchen) even tells him to do it. Like I said, he's being stubborn by only considering his way of doing things (which "a certain other character in the Avatar universe" has always been crucified for doing)
@Taminator387 жыл бұрын
Ellande Campbell, Yangchen never directly says to take the life of the Fire Lord, even though she says to do whatever it takes to protect the world. In fact, none of Aang's past incarnations say it. Their messages are: be decisive, serve justice, be active in shaping your own future and do whatever it takes. Aang does all of things as well as following the teachings of his own nation, he obeys them all and betrays no one. Yes he may seem stubborn, but he doesn't take the easy route of killing his enemy with limitless power, instead he finds a new way which offers mercy and a potential path to redemption. I believe that if a certain mythical being didn't give him the new ability, he would have been forced to end Ozai. But maybe, since Aang genuinely wanted to not kill him, the mythical being revealed itself. Perhaps the past Avatars never considered the path Aang chose to conclude his battle against Ozai, so they never had the same opportunity... Also, bear in mind that Aang is just a 12/13 year-old child raised as a pacifist, so I'd imagine murder would be the last thing in his innocent mind, so much so that he might even be willing to forgive Ozai for the genocide of his people (I believe opening one of the Chakras required this) This is all just speculation after all. I'm glad to see that a community appreciating this amazing story/show still exists :)

Ellande Campbell You say think of the world but think nothing of the Fire Nation. -I'm sure they wouldn't want their dear leader dead. -Im sure they would have coped better with losing to the enemy if Ozai was spared instead of killed. -Not everyone took the defeat willingly (Fleshed out in the comics) and I'm positive that situation would have been worse if Ozai was turned into a martyr by his nation. -Would Zuko have gotten information on his mother if Ozai was dead? Maybe Aang was looking out for him too. The Fire Nation was the enemy but Aang is compassionate enough to care about ALL people, we see that throughout the entire series and that notion is reinforced in Legend of Korra. Maybe what you think of as being "stubborn by only considering his way" was actually him thinking about the entirety of the world, Fire Nation included, and choosing the path he thought was best for EVERYONE. Like Tarminator said, he even followed all of his past lives advice. Now, it's hard to imagine that Aang would have this much Hindsight, but what he did actually was the best for the world, imo.

I personally find it amazing that as great as Toph is that small bit of the Melon Lord seems to be the most popular meme of her. Now I do find that bit to be good, but don't see why it is the gravitational moment compared to other things she's done.

"Zuko's gone crazy! I made a sand sculpture of Suki and and he Destroy It!" ---- "Oh, and he's attacking Aang." Priorities. Make sure you have them in order. Sokka showing how good he is at tactics. Coming up with a way to help them train to fight the 'Melon Lord'. 7:39 - 7:41 Look! Zuko's Blushing!! How cute ;) 8:23 - 8:35 Remember when Sokka first saw Momo and called him lunch? 9:08 Sounds like someone is losing a few marbles. He can't be Dragon lord. The fire nation killed them off. It was the Ocean Spirit Aang was possessed by at the North Pole. It got a bit mad at the Fire Nation for killing the Moon Spirit. It even took Admiral Zhao with it when it left. I suspect Zhao's fate was drowning.

On the note of whether or not people can be redeemed or need to be killed, it reminds me of Iroh and Zuko's conversation earlier in the series: Zuko: I know what you're going to say, she's my sister, and I should be trying to get along with her. Iroh: No. She's crazy, and she needs to go down.

Other Avatars like Kyoshi wouldn’t hesitate at all, she wouldn’t have any thoughts of morality when Saving the world, she would do what needed to be done and it’s for that reason she’s one of my favorite Avatars

Aang is the last of his kind, the last monk left. If he doesn't live by the thoughts the monks taught him the airbenders would be gone forever so it is understandable why does not want to kill the firelord

One minor thing I liked in this episode was Azula just blabbering during the meeting, out of turn. That's what got Zuko a whole lotta pain, and a permanent mark on his face, but clearly Azula is a favourite child :)

She is the favorite, true, but Zuko got fucked because he challenged a generals plan.

I know this is late, but fun fact, in Asian cultures, there are four animals (or rather four animal families) that are revered in legends: Dragon, Phoenix, Lin (which are mythical creatures resembling Lions), and Turtle. Of the 4, only the Turtle exist in real life, the other three were mythical creatures. And of the 3 mythical creature families, they also divided into many different animals. For example, some of the creatures in the Lin family are Nian, Kirin, etc. For the Dragon and the Phoenix, what they look like in Asian cultures differs from what they look like in Western cultures, but nevertheless, they exist. Another interesting thing to notice in this episode is the war council scene, though I'm not entirely sure if this was intentional or not, as in earlier episode, Zuko had mixed feelings, but mostly pleased about it. In many Asian countries, the left side is favored over the right side, in Western cultures, you're used to hearing "right hand man" that you assume right is better, but in Asians countries, China, Vietnam, probably some other countries, too, left is favored over right. Left is mentioned first, and it usually means more power than right when added to a title of power. For example, in Ancient China/Vietnam, if the King has two Prime Ministers, the Left-Minister would hold a slightly higher position compare to the Right-Minister. While they can't order each other around, there's still a sense of superiority and inferiority between the two positions. And in this scene, Azula is sitting on Ozai's left and Zuko his right. And since ATLA is heavily influenced by Asian cultures, you'd notice a lot of things like that.
