Does anyone notices Toph's face? her first time hearing/feeling Aang in the avatar state. she's in utter shock and in my opinion terrified. Sokka is too. he sold that "Get out of here! Run!". All the avatars voices at one time in pure anger and pain. Katara being the MVP and keeping the group together. 💚 I love this show and its attention to detail

I agree. She even snapped Aang out of the avatar state. The look they gave each other though! Aang was fury and pain and Katara with pain and understanding. She, out of anyone, knows how it is to have someone they absolutely love taken from them. I love this show.

I still get chills when it's all the voices of the past avatars saying, "Tell me where Appa is!" Absolutely epic! However, to me this episode really shows the inner strength of Katara. She kept the group together when no one else would. She even risked her life when Aang was in the avatar state to calm him down. That's love right there.

And yet, despite scenes like that, people still don't think Katara had the same feelings for Aang or that their relationship was more like mother/son. Unbelievable, makes me wonder if they even watched the same show I did.

Clueless Gamers well, I mean, Katara in the beginning and even in this episode gave off a motherly love kind of feeling. She acted like the mother of the group. Trying to keep everyone together, trying to be strong but also warm and comforting at the same time. Honestly I personally don't think Katara started showing romantic interest in Aang until later

@@MetallicaRules -- Whether you interpret Katara's love for Aang as motherly or romantic is, in my opinion, entirely subjective (personally, I see it as more motherly, though I don't hate on Kataang at all). The real point here is, however you interpreted that love, it was still LOVE. It was such a powerful, sweet scene, whether you ship them or not. It was love, it was trust, and it was real.

This episode is an amazing Katara episode. I dare you to re-watch this and see all these events through Katara's eyes and not get teary-eyed. She's the one keeping everyone together the whole episode. Toph can't see and can't see by feeling through the sand. Sokka and Momo were bother tripping. Aang was emotionally compromised. By the end of the episode, Katara has worked so tirelessly the whole time just trying to keep everyone sane that she automatically knows what she has to do to comfort her friend. The last shot of them hugging with the tears coming from Aang's eyes gets me every time because you couldn't tell that he's crying when he was in the Avatar State. Also, you talked over the "It's the quenchiest!" line and that made me sad.

Totally agree and ALSO she had to take all that yelling from Aang saying she is doing nothing and had to see how furious he looked at her. The scene where Aang killed that Buzzard-Wasp was the moment I really knew where his state of mind was so when the sandbenders finally showed up, I knew shit was about to go down for them. One of my favorite moments of this episode was when Aang basically went ape-shit on the sandbenders. I also just really loved how you could hear the utter disbelief and anger in Aang's voice at Appa being muzzled. It made what happened next all the more shocking and epic. I mean, that menacing voice that came out of Aang's mouth? That literally sent chills down my body! And the music at the end didn't help too...it was just so beautiful and sad. One of the most emotional soundtracks I've heard in the show thus far. I could feel everything that Aang was feeling up to that moment: anger, loss, and deep sadness. I think if it weren't for the Sokka and Zuko/Iroh scenes, this episode would've been a lot darker and depressing than it was.

Katara really showed her worth this episode. When I first watched this episode I finally understood: it makes so much sense for her to have the healing ability (which I previously thought was kind of a cliche), because it fits her nurturing, flexible personality that kept the group alive in the desert, it does not really have anything to do with strength, since other powerful benders did not have it. All the abilities are connected to the characters, it is so awesome.

"Tell me where Appa is ?!" The voices of all the past avatars, echoing in rage along side Aang. It just goes to show you how close Appa/Aang are, he's literally hurting inside because he doesn't have his best friend with him. I remember watching this as a kid and not entirely understanding how deep and meaningful this episode was, I was too focused on the avatar state 'OH YEA, AVATAR EYES LETS GO'. Now I get teary eyed just watching Aang's moods/expressions, you can FEEL him hurting :(

@Jenya March Well I hate to break it to you, but if you really look at the episode, The Southern Raiders is not only a pretty good example of why Zutara wouldn't work, but why Kataang works far better. Sure, Zuko and Katara are the two main characters in the episode and they go on the journey together, but who's the one that Katara listens to in the end? That would be Aang. Who's the one that does nothing as Katara slowly gives into her anger and hatred, almost losing herself in the process? That would be Zuko. You even have at the end of the episode Zuko admit that Aang was right about what Katara needed, showing he understood Katara's pain and what would help her more than Zuko did.

+Marcus Hutchingson It's not just Appa being of the Air Nation I don't think. Every Avatar has their own, well, kinda "Spirit Animal" I guess is the closest I can come to describing it, with whom they have a bond as if they are a part of themselves in another body. We saw that with Roku and his Dragon already to an extent, and we saw hints of it with Aang when he got mad at Toph for even *suggesting* Appa might be the cause of Azula and her gang being able to follow them in _The Chase_, but this Episode truly shows you just how deep the connection really is. Now, don't get me wrong: Aang would be angry when *any* of his friends would get kidnapped, but Appa is the only one for which he'd go into the Avatar State.

Aang was crying in the Avatar state. All his lives cried for Appa because he was in distress even though they've lived lifetimes and know everything will be okay.... That's what made this scene so beautiful. The Avatar state isn't just defensive it comforts him when he's in pain

I love how it just makes sense. Like, it makes sense that Toph always remembers voices, as she's blind. The voice is the only thing she can truly use to identify a person. The voice is like her version of a face.

I always thought that when Aang went into the Avatar State against the Sand Benders, that they should've had him lift up that entire Giant Rock right behind them and move it towards them threateningly. What he actually did wasn't bad, but I think the rock would've been more of a threatening gesture in comparison

This is my favorite avatar state scene in the entire show, although avatar Roku showing up against the fire sages is a close second. I feel like the music really captures the emotions that Aang and Katara are feeling in the moment.

The scene where Aang loses it and it takes a caring Katara to bring him back... But seeing him in tears gets me every time! I love this episode and that scene. Did Shane tear up a bit? I thought I saw him wipe a tear away... glad I’m not the only one.😅

Extreme emotions also trigger the Avatar State I think. I remember when Aang found his father figure/old master's corpse and he slipped into the State after grief consumed him. Definitely one of my favorite episodes. Aang is such a sweet kid and usually rolls with the punches that seeing him lose it and get angry was surprising, but understanding. The show does a good job making us empathize with its cast even if do not always agree with their decisions.

I love the scene where Katara calms Aang just with a hug, because that's what Aang needed the most at that moment. Katara understands the feeling of losing someone you love, so, she just didn't needed to say anything. It's a powerful scene that could be easily been misunderstood with "the love interest that can calm down the protagonist", but it is much more, it's the empathy and grief of losing someone that has been there all your life.

Aw man, the skipped the mushroom scene. This is both one of the funniest, and the saddest episodes in the series. One of my favorites. That avatar state alone is enough to make this one of the best episodes, but we also have the funniest thing in the series when Sokka is on cactus juice, we get some foreshadowing of the white lotus, we see Katara's strength both physically and mentally, it really captures Aang's grief really well, seeing how Appa is no just his life-long friend, but also the only thing he has left of the airbenders, everyone else he ever knew and loved are gone, and Appa is pretty much the only thing he has left of his past life. It also really manages to capture the hopelessness of the situation. And the animation is this episode is one of the best the series has to offer, i mean, the animation was always amazing, but particularly in this episode there's just something about the animation that also really captures the hopelessness of the situation. Just a great episode.
