For all of those "correcting" him with your high school French, "gauche" is indeed "left" (droite being right). If you follow along, he's referring to the unreliability of many people's information, as in "We asked where the minefield was and they would say 'left' while pointing right". Thereby justifying his verify, verify, verify comment. Pay attention to the context, and don't be so quick to think you're more clever and can correct the man. In this case, it made you look foolish. Fascinating interview, like all others in the series. We owe these veterans so much more than we realize. Thank you.

I was an interrogator in the Vietnam War. Like this man mentions, I spent most of my time talking to civilians. I spoke some Vietnamese and my South Vietnamese interpreters spoke some English. The civilians were rural farmers, with a completely different way of seeing the world. Most had never beef out of their districts and had seen a map before. It was a brain-busting job that wore me out. I've never seen an interview with an interrogator before, so I thought I would tell you this guy is telling you the truth of what it's like.

Read a comment saying this man was a German born Jew who fled to America and then fought for the US. That’s respectable as hell, I always love hearing stories from these guys. You can always hear the respect and adoration they have for this country. Far more than a lot of other people, myself included most of the time

This sounds like how I get information out of my family. Never question just one person. People lie; people are forgetful; people don’t have time to talk; people don’t want to get into that conversation; people are paranoid and don’t know what you’re fishing for so they try to avoid the question and turn it around on you. It’s like a brain teaser and no one can seem to give you a straight answer. No one has the whole story. Why is my family like this? Why can I understand an official military interrogator? And all I was doing was trying to make sense of my family’s past behavior and medical history so I could better understand myself! It’s not like I was trying to dig up nasty family dirt.

YES! the Allies (US, Canada, UK + MANY others) were joyfully welcomed as Liberators by the vast majority of French citizens (and other occupied nations). But: there were some fascist sympathizers in France. It seems crazy, but one of the most brutal SS groups was made up of French volunteers. Rarely is anything as completely straightforward as it seems.
