At some point it occurred to me that when he says "I'm going to catch you" he doesn't mean he himself is going to catch Peter but that the Iron Spider will. He was still planning on getting on that ship and probably never returning which is pretty sad... Also interesting how he refers to his creations as an extension of himself.

And the tech is pretty intuitive so it might even deploy the parachute itself when it realized Peter was falling from such a great height. And since Tony knew the suit would catch him he had no need to do it and could keep chasing after Dr. Strange and the stone.
